For a no-code setup, connect a hosted bot such as StreamElements or Nightbot, authorize it to moderate your channel, then configure and test a few commands and moderation rules while your broadcast is live. Both services’ YouTube setup guides say the stream must be public and live for the bot to join. YouTube’s built-in blocked words, held-message controls and slow mode can provide an additional layer of moderation.
Choose a hosted bot or build your own
A hosted bot is the practical route for most creators: you connect a service through its dashboard and set up commands, timers or filters without writing code. StreamElements and Nightbot both document YouTube setup flows. If you need a bot tailored to your own software or workflow and can program, the YouTube Live Streaming API is a separate developer route.

Set up StreamElements on YouTube
- Connect the service: Open StreamElements and follow its dashboard instructions to connect your YouTube channel.
- Make the broadcast public and live: StreamElements’ YouTube bot setup guide says the bot must join a public live broadcast.
- Add the bot as a moderator: In YouTube Studio, open Settings, then Community, and add the StreamElements account listed in its YouTube setup guide as a moderator.
- Check the correct chat view: Once live, use Live chat to check for bot messages. Top chat may hide them.
- Configure a small set of features first: In the StreamElements dashboard, add a couple of custom commands or timers, then choose spam filters and interactive modules only as needed. Set command permission levels so commands are available to the intended users.
- Test during the broadcast: Trigger each command, check that timers post as expected, and observe how filters affect real messages before relying on them.
StreamElements notes that some features found on other platforms—including loyalty-linked giveaways, viewer queue, stream store and media requests—are not currently available for YouTube accounts. Check its chatbot overview before planning a YouTube workflow around a particular module.

Set up Nightbot
- Sign in to Nightbot and open its dashboard.
- Select Join and follow Nightbot’s instructions to make the bot a moderator.
- Go live publicly: Nightbot’s YouTube bot joins only while the channel is live and public.
- Add commands and timers in the control panel, then try them in chat during a test broadcast.
Nightbot’s General Setup guide describes the dashboard flow. The cited setup documentation establishes commands and timers but does not provide a head-to-head reliability comparison with other bots.

Configure YouTube’s built-in chat moderation
A chatbot and YouTube’s own controls serve as complementary tools. In YouTube’s live-chat moderation settings, channel owners or managing moderators can configure blocked words, choose Basic or Strict holding of potentially inappropriate messages, and enable slow mode. Review the options in YouTube’s live-chat moderation guidance, then test the audience experience: filters can hold messages that viewers expected to appear, and slow mode changes how quickly they can post.
- Blocked words: Use these for terms you do not want appearing in chat.
- Held messages: Basic or Strict automatic moderation can hold potentially inappropriate messages for review.
- Slow mode: Use it when you want to limit the pace of chat messages.
Test commands and diagnose a silent bot
Test commands with an account that has the permissions your audience will have. Confirm the trigger prefix, expected response and any role restrictions; a command that works for its creator may not be available to every viewer.

- The bot does not join: Check that the broadcast is public and live, and confirm the service’s moderator setup is complete.
- The bot is present but says nothing: For StreamElements, confirm it is active and not banned, ignored or muted. Its troubleshooting guide identifies these checks.
- A command does not trigger: Check the command prefix and syntax, then verify its permission level.
- You cannot see the bot’s message: Check Live chat rather than Top chat, which may hide bot messages during StreamElements setup.
- Moderation feels too restrictive: Test blocked words, held-message settings and slow mode during a broadcast, and adjust them to suit the audience experience.
Build a custom bot with the YouTube Live Streaming API
Custom development makes sense when a hosted dashboard does not fit the workflow and you can maintain an API-based client. Google’s documentation describes a streaming gRPC client for receiving live-chat messages. Its example covers authentication and obtaining the active live chat ID from video details. This is not a quick no-code alternative: it requires API setup, authentication and programming. Follow the current Google for Developers guide for the API flow rather than assuming a chat identifier or authentication method.
