How to Schedule a YouTube Livestream Playlist with Windows Task Scheduler

YouTube schedules the event; Windows Task Scheduler starts the local encoder. Here’s how to connect the pieces, test automatic Go live and troubleshoot failures.

To start a pre-recorded playlist at a set time, schedule the YouTube event in YouTube Studio, configure an encoder or player to send the playlist to that event, then use Windows Task Scheduler to launch the encoder or its script. These are separate jobs: scheduling a Windows task does not create or publish the YouTube livestream. Whether the stream goes live unattended depends on the encoder setup and YouTube’s stream settings, including auto-start.

How the two schedules work together

YouTube Studio schedules the public livestream event and its watch page. Windows Task Scheduler starts software on your PC at a chosen time. The encoder or player reads your playlist and sends its output to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key. The whole chain must work for viewers to see the stream.

  • YouTube event: Sets the livestream’s time, title, privacy and other event details.
  • Local task: Launches the executable or script that starts your playback and encoding workflow.
  • Encoder connection: Sends video and audio from the playlist to YouTube.
  • Go-live behavior: May require an operator to review the preview and click Go live, unless the stream and encoder are configured and tested for automatic start.

Task Scheduler does not play media or know how to loop a playlist by itself. Playlist formats, looping, encoder arguments and unattended operation depend on the software you choose; use that software’s current official documentation for those details.

Schedule the YouTube livestream event

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Under Manage, create a new stream or reuse an existing setup, then schedule the event.
  2. Set the intended title, description, privacy and scheduled time. Check that the time zone and date are correct.
  3. Note the event or watch-page details so you can confirm the right event is connected to your encoder workflow. Scheduled events can appear as upcoming, and viewers may be able to opt in to notifications.
  4. Locate the stream URL and stream key for the encoder setup. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or include it in a publicly accessible script. If you reset the key in YouTube, update the encoder or script to use the replacement.

YouTube’s official guides explain the encoder connection and the available stream settings: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and Manage live stream settings.

  • TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.

Prepare the playlist and encoder

Configure your chosen encoder or player to read the intended playlist, encode or pass through its audio and video as required, and send the result to YouTube’s stream URL with the correct key. The exact procedure cannot be generalized: playlist syntax, looping controls, startup parameters, reconnect behavior and media support vary by application. Verify each item in that application’s official manual rather than copying command-line flags intended for another encoder.

  • Use stable, accessible file paths. If the playlist references local files, confirm the task’s account can read those files when it runs.
  • Check that the encoder can start without interactive prompts if you expect it to run unattended.
  • Decide whether you want to start manually after inspecting the preview or use auto-start behavior. YouTube’s manual encoder flow includes checking the preview and selecting Go live; auto-start and auto-stop are settings, not a guarantee that every encoder workflow will publish automatically.
  • Keep the stream key out of shared folders, public repositories, logs and screenshots. Reset it in YouTube and update the encoder if it is exposed.

Create the Windows Task Scheduler task

In Windows, Task Scheduler provides a trigger for when a task runs and an action for what it launches. Microsoft’s schtasks /create reference documents schedule types and the /tr field for the program or command to run. The Task Scheduler interface and command-line options can differ by Windows version; use the labels and options shown on your system.

Using the Task Scheduler interface

  1. Open Task Scheduler from the Start menu and choose Create Task (or the available task-creation option in your Windows version).
  2. On Triggers, add a time-based trigger for the intended date and time. Choose a one-time or recurring schedule that matches the event.
  3. On Actions, add an action to start a program. Enter the encoder executable’s full path. If you use a batch file or script wrapper, select the appropriate host or wrapper and provide its arguments as required by that script.
  4. Set the working directory or Start in value where the chosen encoder or script expects it. Quote paths containing spaces when entering command-line arguments; confirm the exact quoting rules with the program’s documentation.
  5. Review the task’s account and run conditions. Ensure it has access to the playlist files, stream configuration and network connection. Conditions that require the computer to be idle or on AC power can affect whether it starts.
  6. Save the task and use Task Scheduler’s run or history options to verify that it launches the intended executable. A successful task launch alone does not prove that YouTube is receiving or publishing the stream.

Optional: create a task with schtasks

Microsoft’s schtasks /create command can create a scheduled task, but the actual command and arguments depend on your encoder, script and schedule. Do not substitute a guessed encoder command. Consult Microsoft’s reference for the supported schedule syntax and your encoder’s official manual for its launch options. Whichever method you use, confirm the task’s working directory, account permissions and access to the files it needs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose manual or automatic Go live

Approach What happens What to verify
Manual start The task launches the encoder; an operator checks the YouTube preview and selects Go live. Someone must be available at the scheduled time, and the correct event and preview must be ready.
Configured auto-start The encoder and YouTube stream settings are configured for automatic behavior, subject to the specific tools and setup. Test the complete workflow in advance. Do not assume a scheduled Windows task automatically bypasses YouTube’s preview or publishes the event.

Test before relying on the schedule

YouTube Help recommends setting up the encoder at least 2 hours before a livestream and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time. Its guidance also recommends upload bandwidth headroom of 20% above the stream’s requirements. These are YouTube’s operational recommendations; the Help pages do not state a publication year. See YouTube streaming tips.

  • Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight
  1. Start the encoder early enough to confirm it connects to the intended scheduled event and shows the expected audio and video in the preview.
  2. Verify the event’s privacy and accessibility using the intended viewer account or audience setup.
  3. Check that the scheduled task runs under the intended Windows account, at the right time, and with the correct permissions and working directory.
  4. Confirm that all playlist media is present and readable, and that the encoder can continue through the playlist or loop as configured.
  5. Monitor YouTube’s stream health and confirm the selected Go-live behavior. A task that reports a successful launch can still fail to deliver a healthy stream.

YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream. The computer must be awake and available, and the network must sustain the upload; Task Scheduler cannot overcome a sleeping or powered-off PC, a disconnected network, or insufficient bandwidth.

Copyright, reused material and livestream archives

Only stream material you have the rights and permissions to use. A scheduled event or a successful encoder connection does not grant permission to rebroadcast music, video or other copyrighted content. YouTube’s policies and copyright checks apply to livestreams, and a stream may be interrupted or restricted if it violates them. Review YouTube’s current live streaming restrictions and copyright guidance before using third-party material.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
The task did not start The PC was off or asleep, the trigger was wrong, or the task account/conditions prevented execution. Check the trigger date, time and recurrence; review Task Scheduler history; verify the computer was available and that the task account is permitted to run it.
The encoder opens but cannot find the playlist The task uses a different working directory or account, or a referenced media path is unavailable. Use the correct working directory, prefer verified full paths, and confirm the task account can access every playlist item.
YouTube does not receive the stream The encoder has the wrong stream URL or key, cannot connect, or the network upload is inadequate. Recheck the event’s stream details, update the encoder if the key was reset, and inspect YouTube stream health and upload capacity.
The preview appears, but viewers do not see a live event The stream is waiting for a manual Go live action, or the auto-start setup is not configured as expected. Check the preview and event status in Live Control Room. Select Go live if using manual start, or retest the configured automatic workflow.
The stream starts but stops or loses media Connectivity failed, a playlist file is missing, or the encoder’s looping/reconnect behavior differs from expectations. Inspect the encoder’s logs and official documentation, verify all source files, and test recovery and looping before the scheduled event.

Or let it run in the cloud

Windows Task Scheduler runs software on your own computer, so it cannot keep the stream going if that computer or its connection is unavailable. StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. Its cloud playback does not require your home computer to stay on.

  • Each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot with no re-encode or quality tiers.
  • It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card; the monthly option is $9.99 per month.
  • Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, playlists, 24/7 looping and StreamNeo team support.
