Set Playwright’s emulated color scheme to dark before taking the screenshot. This makes the browser report prefers-color-scheme: dark; the website must support that preference for its page to look dark.
Take a dark-mode screenshot in JavaScript
For an existing Playwright page, emulate dark mode before capturing:

With fullPage: true, Playwright captures the full scrollable page; omit that option to capture only the current viewport. See the Playwright emulation documentation and Page API.

Choose the screenshot size, format, and scale
Playwright’s screenshot options let you match the output to its intended use. The following choices are documented in the Page API:
- Viewport or full page: the default capture is the visible viewport; set
fullPage: trueto include the page’s scrollable content. - Image format: choose PNG, JPEG, or WebP. The filename extension should match the selected type when you set one explicitly.
- Scale:
scale: 'css'produces one screenshot pixel per CSS pixel.scale: 'device'uses device pixels, which can produce a larger high-density image.
For example, a full-page WebP capture at CSS-pixel scale can be written as:

For visual comparisons, Playwright Test provides expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(). Playwright’s visual comparison guide says it captures screenshots until two consecutive captures match before comparison or initial snapshot creation. Keep the rendering environment consistent between baseline generation and comparison: browser and OS versions, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode can all affect output. Troubleshoot a screenshot that is not dark
- The image still has a light design: verify that
emulateMedia({ colorScheme: 'dark' })ran before the capture, or that the context or test configuration setscolorScheme: 'dark'. The preference does not force a theme; the site’s CSS or application must implement dark styling. - Only part of the page appears: add
fullPage: trueif you need content beyond the visible viewport. - The screenshot differs from the baseline: compare captures in a consistent browser and host environment, including headless mode and settings, and account for dynamic content without hiding content that matters to the test.
