YouTube can schedule a live event, but its documented scheduling and stream settings do not provide a native way to switch playlist blocks automatically. YouTube handles the event; an encoder or streaming-automation system must supply the content and make the transition. Before relying on any setup for a 24/7 stream, confirm that it can start the next playlist when the current block ends.
Can YouTube switch playlists automatically?
Not through a playlist-block scheduler documented in YouTube’s Live Control Room settings. YouTube lets you schedule and promote a live event, configure stream settings, and connect an encoder. The encoder sends the live video feed to YouTube; the cited settings do not describe stream keys, latency, DVR, or auto-start and auto-stop as controls for switching playlists. YouTube’s live stream settings and encoder setup guide describe those separate parts of the workflow.

So the practical arrangement has two layers: schedule the event in YouTube, then arrange the playlist sequence and end-of-block transition in the system generating the encoder feed. The official guidance cited here does not identify a particular encoder or automation product that supports this transition. Verify that capability and its continuous-operation and recovery behavior with the provider before using it.

- Schedule the event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room, choose Manage, and schedule a stream. You can reuse settings or create a new stream. YouTube’s encoder instructions cover this workflow.
- Configure the content system. Set up the encoder or associated automation to send the intended video sequence, including the required transition from one block to the next. Check specifically that it starts the next playlist at the end of the current block; do not assume YouTube scheduling performs this step.
- Connect the encoder. Enter the stream URL and stream key shown in YouTube into the encoder. The encoder sends the feed, and Live Control Room displays a preview. You then click Go live when ready.
- Test before the scheduled start. YouTube advises setting up encoders at least two hours before an event and starting them at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time. Check the preview and test the setup. These are event-preparation recommendations, not a guarantee of uninterrupted 24/7 operation. See YouTube live streaming tips.
- Choose a supported ingest protocol. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL. If your encoder supports RTMPS, get the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room and use it there; compatibility depends on the encoder. See Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
How to make the next playlist start when the current one ends
Build the transition into the encoder-side workflow. Before going live, confirm that the selected system can recognize the end of the current block and begin the next one without ending the YouTube event. Then test the actual sequence in a preview or other suitable test setup and check what happens if the feed or connection is interrupted. These are capabilities to verify, not features established for any particular third-party product by the YouTube instructions cited here.

- Transition trigger: Does the system start the next playlist when the current block finishes, rather than at a fixed clock time or only after manual action?
- Continuous feed: Does the YouTube encoder feed remain active during the transition?
- Interruption behavior: Does the system resume or recover after a dropped connection, and what operator action is needed?
- Preview and intervention: Can you check the feed before going live and intervene if the wrong block starts?
- YouTube compatibility: Does the system support YouTube’s stream URL and key, and RTMPS if you intend to use it?
What scheduling does for viewers
A scheduled stream can appear as an upcoming event to subscribers. Viewers may select Notify me to receive a notification when it is about to begin. That makes scheduling useful for promoting the start of a live event; it does not schedule playlist changes within the feed. See YouTube’s live streaming guide.
Ending a stream and archive limits
The documented end procedure is to click End Stream and stop sending content from the encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that statement should not be treated as an archive guarantee for a 24/7 stream. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Troubleshooting a playlist transition
- The scheduled event appears, but no video arrives: Check that the encoder is sending to the stream URL and key for that event, then inspect the Live Control Room preview.
- The feed plays one block and stops: Check the encoder-side sequence and its end-of-block behavior. YouTube’s scheduling feature does not establish playlist automation.
- The next block does not start: Verify the transition trigger and test the sequence before relying on it live. Confirm whether the automation requires manual action or a particular playlist configuration.
- The stream fails after an interruption: Check the encoder or service’s recovery behavior and the operator steps it requires. YouTube’s event-preparation advice does not guarantee 24/7 uptime.
- RTMPS does not connect: Confirm that the encoder supports RTMPS and use the RTMPS URL supplied in Live Control Room.
