How to Schedule a YouTube 24/7 Stream Playlist with a Linux systemd Timer

Use a systemd timer to start FFmpeg on schedule—but verify the YouTube event separately, plan for event duration, and monitor playback beyond Linux service status.

You can use a Linux systemd timer to start an FFmpeg service at a chosen time, with FFmpeg sending a looping playlist to a scheduled YouTube broadcast. The timer starts the local encoder; it does not prove the YouTube event is live. YouTube’s documented encoder workflow includes waiting for a preview and clicking Go live, so plan for that platform-side step and verify playback in YouTube Studio.

Understand what the timer does—and what it does not

There are three separate pieces in this setup:

  • The YouTube broadcast is the scheduled event and watch page viewers see.
  • The FFmpeg process sends your audio/video feed to YouTube using the current ingest URL and stream key.
  • The systemd timer activates a systemd service at a calendar time; that service runs FFmpeg.

YouTube’s Live Streaming API distinguishes broadcast resources from stream resources, which are bound together. Starting FFmpeg does not by itself confirm that the right event is bound, that YouTube has accepted a healthy feed, or that the event has transitioned to live. See the YouTube Live Streaming API reference and YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

Also treat “24/7” as an operating goal, not a guarantee that one broadcast can run forever. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that statement does not establish that a single event can remain live indefinitely. Decide how you will handle event duration, restarts, and handoffs, then confirm the current behavior for your account.

Before you configure Linux

Schedule the YouTube event

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room, choose Manage, then select Schedule stream. Labels can change, so follow the current Studio interface if they differ.
  2. Set the event’s title, privacy, schedule, and other applicable settings. A scheduled event gives viewers an upcoming watch page and an opportunity to set a reminder.
  3. Open that event’s stream settings and copy its current stream URL and stream key. The key is a credential: do not publish it, commit it to source control, or paste it into an example or public log.
  4. Where supported, prefer the RTMPS endpoint displayed for the event. YouTube’s RTMPS instructions explain encrypted ingest and direct creators to obtain the URL from Live Control Room. Do not rely on an old endpoint copied from a tutorial; if connection troubleshooting points to protocol or server address, check those values against the current event settings.

Prepare a playlist that FFmpeg can actually loop

Playlist handling depends on the files, their codecs, the FFmpeg build, ordering, and whether the list may change while streaming. For the concrete service example below, prepare one continuous media file from the desired playlist and test it locally first. That keeps the looping input straightforward; it does not make arbitrary mixed-format source files compatible. If you instead use a multi-file playlist or concat input, build and test that input method against the installed FFmpeg version before putting it under systemd.

FFmpeg’s official documentation and all-in-one reference describe supported options and components. Documentation is version-sensitive, so use the reference matching the FFmpeg installed on your Linux host.

Test the FFmpeg feed before scheduling it

Run FFmpeg in the foreground first, using the intended media file and the current event’s ingest details. The template below assumes a continuous file at /srv/stream/playlist.mp4. Set YOUTUBE_OUTPUT_URL to the complete output target in the form FFmpeg expects, assembled from the current URL and key using YouTube’s and FFmpeg’s current instructions. The value contains a secret; the example deliberately does not show a real key.

ffmpeg -nostdin -hide_banner -loglevel warning
  -re -stream_loop -1 -i /srv/stream/playlist.mp4
  -c copy -f flv "$YOUTUBE_OUTPUT_URL"

This is a starting template, not a universal or tested drop-in command. -stream_loop -1 repeats this file as an input, and -c copy avoids re-encoding; stream copying is appropriate only when the file’s streams and container work for the chosen YouTube ingest path. If they do not, determine the needed encoding from the media and current platform guidance, then test the result before scheduling it.

There is no one bitrate, resolution, or keyframe interval that can be responsibly prescribed for every playlist and encoder setup here. The example copies the media’s existing encoded streams rather than setting those values. Check the current recommendations shown for your YouTube event and ensure the source file meets them; if you transcode, set and verify bitrate, resolution, and keyframe behavior for that output rather than assuming the timer will correct them.

For a protected configuration, run the service as a dedicated Linux account, restrict access to its configuration file, and keep the ingest target out of shell history and source control. The output target may be visible to privileged administrators or through process inspection while FFmpeg runs, so file permissions alone are not a reason to treat the key as safe for public use. Confirm the input file exists and that the service account can read it. YouTube’s basic encoder instruction is to enter the live server URL and stream key in the encoder.

Create a long-running systemd service

Use a service for the FFmpeg process and a separate timer for its scheduled activation. Put the tested command in a script so the service can load the secret from a restricted environment file rather than embedding it in the unit. For example, create /usr/local/bin/stream-youtube.sh with content along these lines, changing paths and the FFmpeg binary for your host:

exec /usr/bin/ffmpeg -nostdin -hide_banner -loglevel warning
  -re -stream_loop -1 -i /srv/stream/playlist.mp4
  -c copy -f flv "$YOUTUBE_OUTPUT_URL"

Make the script executable and ensure the service account can read it and the media file. Store YOUTUBE_OUTPUT_URL in /etc/stream-youtube.env in the exact format tested interactively. Restrict that file to the service account and administrators; do not include its contents in support requests or journal output.

Create /etc/systemd/system/youtube-playlist.service:

[Unit]
Description=Loop playlist to YouTube with FFmpeg
Wants=network-online.target
After=network-online.target

[Service]
Type=simple
User=streamer
Group=streamer
EnvironmentFile=/etc/stream-youtube.env
ExecStart=/usr/local/bin/stream-youtube.sh
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=10

Replace streamer with the dedicated account you created. The restart policy asks systemd to restart FFmpeg if it exits unsuccessfully; it cannot detect every case in which FFmpeg remains running but YouTube playback is frozen or unhealthy. Check that the script’s environment-loading method and file permissions work for your distribution.

Schedule the service with a systemd timer

For a one-time start at 09:00 UTC on October 10, 2026, create /etc/systemd/system/youtube-playlist.timer:

[Unit]
Description=Start the YouTube playlist at its scheduled time

[Timer]
OnCalendar=2026-10-10 09:00:00 UTC
Unit=youtube-playlist.service

[Install]
WantedBy=timers.target

Change the calendar expression to the intended time and timezone. This is a one-time example: a recurring calendar expression is a different schedule and needs a matching YouTube event and operational plan for each occurrence. Calendar syntax, timer accuracy, and behavior after missed runs can depend on the installed systemd version and directives. Check the systemd manual on the target host before relying on a schedule; an older systemd-devel discussion demonstrates the general pattern of an OnCalendar timer activating a service, but is not a current, exhaustive manual.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Reload unit definitions: sudo systemctl daemon-reload.
  2. Enable and start the timer: sudo systemctl enable --now youtube-playlist.timer.
  3. Inspect the timer and its next activation: systemctl list-timers youtube-playlist.timer and systemctl status youtube-playlist.timer.
  4. At the scheduled time, inspect the service: systemctl status youtube-playlist.service. Review recent logs with journalctl -u youtube-playlist.service; confirm that logs do not expose the secret.

Before the real scheduled start, test the service manually with sudo systemctl start youtube-playlist.service, then verify its status and stop it with sudo systemctl stop youtube-playlist.service. A manual service start is useful for checking permissions and connectivity, but it does not exercise the timer’s calendar schedule. Validate both separately.

Verify the broadcast in YouTube Studio

  1. At the scheduled start, confirm on Linux that the timer elapsed and the service started. Check the service journal for FFmpeg errors.
  2. In Live Control Room, confirm that the intended event is receiving the feed and that YouTube shows a preview and healthy stream status.
  3. Follow the event’s current workflow to transition it live. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe waiting for preview and clicking Go live; do not assume that FFmpeg connecting will always take that action automatically.
  4. Check actual viewer playback after the transition. A running FFmpeg process and advancing local counters are not enough to establish that viewers can see moving video and hear audio.

An operator’s public deployment report describes a case in which local FFmpeg activity did not reveal frozen platform playback. It is one operator’s account, not proof that this failure is universal, but it illustrates why the platform-side check matters.

Plan recovery and 24/7 continuity

What systemd can recover

Restart=on-failure can restart the local process after an unsuccessful exit. It does not establish that YouTube accepted the replacement feed, that the event is still available, or that playback resumed. Decide who will check the preview and viewer playback, what to do if the event has ended, and how to restart or schedule the next event.

What needs a separate plan

  • Host or network interruption: confirm the Linux host, storage, and connection remain available, and determine how you will check service recovery after an outage.
  • Unhealthy feed while FFmpeg stays alive: monitor YouTube’s stream health and viewer playback rather than relying only on process status.
  • Event ending or archive behavior: YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not infer an unlimited event duration from that threshold; confirm current account behavior and plan event restarts or handoffs.
  • Scheduled event handling: a repeating Linux timer does not automatically create, bind, preview, or transition each new YouTube broadcast. Arrange those platform-side steps for the event model you choose.

Troubleshooting

Symptom Likely area to check What to do
The timer does not appear or has the wrong next run. Unit reload, enablement, calendar expression, timezone, or installed systemd behavior. Run systemctl daemon-reload, inspect systemctl status and systemctl list-timers, and validate the expression against the host’s systemd manual.
The service starts but FFmpeg exits. Executable path, service-account permissions, missing file, malformed environment file, or invalid output target. Read journalctl -u youtube-playlist.service; verify the binary and media path, account access, and the tested output target without printing the secret publicly.
FFmpeg cannot connect to YouTube. Stale or mistyped ingest URL/key, protocol, server address, or network access. Copy the current event values again from Live Control Room; where using RTMPS, compare the protocol and server address with YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting guidance.
YouTube receives a feed, but no one can watch the event. The event may still be awaiting preview or a platform-side live transition. Check the correct scheduled event in Live Control Room, wait for preview, and follow its current Go live workflow.
The process is active but video is frozen or playback is unhealthy. Platform-side stream health, source media, or a failure not visible as an FFmpeg exit. Check YouTube stream health and actual playback; process status alone is not an end-to-end health check.
The media plays once instead of repeating, or the output is rejected. Input loop placement, file compatibility, or an unsuitable stream-copy assumption. Test the exact command with the installed FFmpeg build, confirm the loop option is applied to the input, and transcode only as needed for the current event’s requirements.

Or let it run in the cloud
