Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If OBS is dropping frames while streaming to YouTube, lower the video bitrate first. OBS’s practical starting point is 75% of your total upload speed, but that is only a rule of thumb—not a guarantee or a YouTube-specific bitrate limit. The stable setting is one your connection can sustain consistently while staying within YouTube’s current requirements.
First check whether OBS is actually dropping frames
In OBS, watch the dropped-frames counter while streaming. If it keeps increasing, OBS describes the problem as an unstable connection to the remote ingest server or a bitrate your connection cannot sustain. OBS says the Studio application itself is extremely unlikely to be the cause of dropped frames.

Viewer buffering is a different symptom. If viewers report buffering but OBS’s dropped-frame counter is not increasing, the problem may be at the viewer end or related to delivery and playback rather than your connection to YouTube’s ingest server. Lowering resolution or bitrate can help viewers on slower connections, but first distinguish that from broadcaster-side dropped frames.
Choose a bitrate your upload connection can sustain
Use OBS’s 75% figure as a starting point, not a target
OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guidance, dated September 30, 2024, suggests starting at 75% of total upload speed. It is a practical initial rule, not a measured guarantee, a universal stable bitrate, or a YouTube-specific maximum. A speed-test peak does not establish what your connection can sustain throughout a live stream.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
Lower the video bitrate in Settings → Output → Video Bitrate, then test the stream under the conditions you expect to use. If dropped frames continue, lower it further and retest. Choose the setting based on stable upload capacity and the platform’s limits; the available OBS guidance does not provide a current resolution-by-resolution YouTube bitrate table, so do not treat any one figure as the right answer for every channel.
Keep other stream settings in context
OBS says YouTube transcodes streams, including the source feed, and recommends using a consistent keyframe interval within the platform’s recommendation so viewers can switch quality options smoothly. That advice concerns smooth quality transitions; it does not determine the bitrate your connection can sustain. Check YouTube’s current encoder requirements for your chosen stream configuration rather than relying on an outdated maximum.

Troubleshoot in a practical order
- Reduce the video bitrate. In OBS, open Settings → Output → Video Bitrate. Start with OBS’s 75%-of-total-upload-speed rule only as a first estimate, then test and adjust according to whether the dropped-frame counter continues to rise.
- Test another ingest server. Open Settings → Stream and try a different server if the option is available for your connection. If the issue changes, the selected route may be involved. OBS also suggests testing another streaming service to help determine whether the problem is specific to a service.
- Use wired Ethernet if possible. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. A cable removes the wireless link from the path, but it cannot by itself fix ISP instability, packet loss elsewhere, or a problematic ingest route.
- Check software and network equipment. Temporarily investigate whether a VPN, security software, or bundled network-optimization utility is interfering with OBS traffic. Check for outdated network drivers and connectivity problems with your modem or router. Change one factor at a time and retest so you can identify what helped.
- On Windows, test OBS’s network options cautiously. OBS lists network optimizations and TCP pacing as settings to try. It also lists IPv4-only as a diagnostic option; if switching to IPv4-only makes no difference, return to the default IPv4/IPv6 setting. These options are Windows-specific and are not a substitute for diagnosing the connection.
- Use dynamic bitrate only as a fallback. OBS’s dynamic bitrate adjustment can reduce bitrate when the connection cannot keep up. OBS notes that it does not solve the underlying problem and that image quality may fall as bitrate is reduced. Treat it as a way to keep a stream going through changing conditions, not as a repair for an unstable connection.
- Review an OBS log if the cause remains unclear. Use a current log when seeking help. A network-dropped-frame symptom by itself does not establish an encoder performance problem; OBS handles encoding-performance issues separately.
When viewers buffer but OBS shows no dropped frames
Do not assume every viewer playback complaint means your ingest bitrate is too high. If OBS’s counter is stable, consider the distinct viewer-buffering issue: viewers may have slower connections, and reducing resolution or bitrate may improve their ability to watch. OBS’s viewer-buffering guidance is dated June 9, 2021, so use it for the distinction between symptoms, not as a source for current YouTube limits.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps it running without a computer, OBS, or home connection staying on.
