You can schedule a YouTube live event in YouTube Studio, then use FFmpeg on an always-on cloud VM to send a prerecorded playlist to YouTube while your own computer is off. These are two separate jobs: Studio creates the event and its watch page; FFmpeg supplies the live video feed. A scheduled event alone does not automate a continuous 24/7 playlist.
Choose the right kind of stream first
Decide whether you need one continuous channel feed or a series of separate, scheduled events. The distinction affects how viewers find the stream, how you manage transitions, and what you can expect YouTube to archive.

YouTube’s API distinguishes a liveBroadcast, representing an event, from a liveStream, representing reusable ingest settings. If you only need to schedule events, you may not need an always-on 24/7 encoder process. See YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation for the resource model.

- A YouTube channel that is eligible to use live streaming, with access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- Media you are authorized to stream, stored on persistent disk attached to or accessible from the VM.
- An always-on VM in an Indian cloud region, if you want the server to run from India. Its location does not by itself guarantee enough compute, transfer capacity, or reliability.
- A private YouTube stream key and the server URL shown in Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or include it in publicly accessible scripts, logs, or screenshots.
- A plan for process monitoring, internet interruptions, VM restarts, and what should happen when a media file ends or fails.
Schedule the YouTube event in Studio
- Open Live Control Room: In YouTube Studio, select Create and then Go live. Open the Manage area and choose the option to schedule a stream.
- Set up the event: Add the title, description, visibility, date and time, audience setting, and any other event details YouTube presents. Scheduling creates a watch page viewers can visit; it does not start FFmpeg or create playlist automation.
- Get the encoder details: In Live Control Room, locate the stream URL and stream key for the event or reusable stream configuration. Use the current values shown there in your encoder setup.
- Keep the event and encoder aligned: Start sending the feed in time to check the preview and stream health before the scheduled start. YouTube’s encoder workflow is to configure the server URL and stream key, begin sending content, and stop sending content to end the stream. See YouTube Help: set up a live stream with an encoder.
If you are scheduling recurring events with the YouTube API rather than the Studio interface, keep the event and ingest resource distinction in mind: broadcasts are separate events even when they share encoder settings.

Prepare an Indian VM for continuous playlist playout
Choose capacity based on the actual workload
Do not choose a VM solely because its data center is in India. Check the provider’s current India-region availability, sustained CPU capability for your chosen encoding mode, persistent storage, outbound data-transfer limits, restart behavior, and terms of service. The right size and cost depend on whether FFmpeg is copying a compatible stream or encoding video, as well as the number and format of your media files. No universal instance size or current price can be inferred from the region alone.
Make media survive restarts
Keep playlist files on persistent storage or another location the VM can reliably access. A temporary disk may be erased when an instance is stopped or replaced. Confirm that the service account or VM can read the media and that there is enough capacity for the playlist, logs, and any working files.

Confirm that the media and stream settings match
Inspect your source files and choose output settings that YouTube accepts and your VM can sustain. When re-encoding is needed, the CPU must handle it continuously; when stream-copying is appropriate, the source must already be compatible with the intended output. Test the exact media and settings before depending on unattended playback. YouTube’s Live Control Room health indicators can help identify feed problems.
Run FFmpeg as a real-time playlist source
FFmpeg can read media inputs and send an output to an ingest destination. Its official manual documents -re (also described as -readrate 1) for reading an input at its native frame rate, which is useful when output timing matters, such as live streaming. Real-time pacing does not make a process reliable by itself: it does not supervise FFmpeg, reconnect after every failure, guarantee that all files are compatible, or keep the VM running.

- Build and test the playlist: Confirm every file is present, readable, and authorized for use. Test transitions and playback order with the actual files rather than assuming a list will work identically across formats.
- Configure the input and output: Set the playlist or looping input behavior, any necessary video and audio encoding or stream-copy settings, and the YouTube ingest destination using the URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Keep credentials out of shared command histories and public logs.
- Use real-time input pacing: Apply FFmpeg’s
-reor equivalent documented read-rate setting where appropriate so file input is not sent faster than real time. Check the manual for the precise syntax for the input type and FFmpeg build you use. - Verify before scheduling viewers: Start a test feed and inspect the preview and health status in Live Control Room. Check that audio and video are present, the playlist advances as expected, and the VM is not overloaded.
- Supervise the process: Configure the VM’s process manager or service tooling to record logs and restart a failed process where appropriate. Decide how to detect a stuck process, failed media, or a broken network connection; test recovery rather than assuming an automatic restart will restore a valid stream.
There is no single FFmpeg command that is production-safe for every combination of playlist format, codec, audio layout, YouTube settings, and VM capacity. Build the command around your files and tested stream settings, then verify the result in YouTube before relying on it unattended.
Plan for archives, interruptions, and rights
YouTube’s archive limit matters for a 24/7 feed
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on a stream lasting longer than 12 hours being saved as one complete video. If complete on-demand copies matter, plan shorter separate events or make and retain an independent recording and backup. The Help page does not establish how a longer-than-12-hour stream will be handled in every case.

Prepare for drops and restarts
A cloud VM removes the need to leave your personal computer running, but it does not remove the need to monitor the encoder and connection. A VM restart, provider maintenance, network interruption, FFmpeg error, or unreadable file can stop delivery. Keep logs, alerts, and a tested restart or recovery procedure; after recovery, check Live Control Room to confirm the feed is actually healthy.
Use media you have the right to stream
Having a file on disk does not grant permission to broadcast it. Before scheduling a playlist, confirm that you have rights to the music, video, artwork, and any other material it contains, including any permissions needed for public or monetized use. Review YouTube’s current Community Guidelines and applicable copyright requirements. Repeatedly broadcasting prerecorded material also does not guarantee monetization: YouTube’s monetization review can consider whether content is original and adds meaningful value. Check the current YouTube channel monetization policies before building a channel around reused material.

When a managed cloud transcoding service is a different fit
Running FFmpeg on a VM gives you direct control over the encoder and playlist process, but also leaves you responsible for VM capacity, process supervision, storage, and recovery. Google Cloud’s Live Stream API is a separate managed transcoding architecture. Its documented outputs are HLS or DASH saved to Cloud Storage; that description is not evidence that the API directly sends an encoder feed to YouTube. See Google Cloud Live Stream API overview before treating it as an alternative, and verify that its output and delivery model matches your goal.
Troubleshoot common failures
