When prompted, choose Antenna, Air or Terrestrial—not Cable. The scan adds channels the tuner can receive; it cannot guarantee reception of every local station.
Before you scan
- Connect the antenna’s coaxial cable to the TV’s ANT IN, Ant/Cable In or similarly labeled input.
- Choose the TV’s broadcast-TV or live-TV source. A connected streaming device or set-top box is a different input.
- When the tuner asks for a signal type, select antenna/air/terrestrial. Cable mode is for a cable-TV feed and is not the right choice for an antenna.
Menu names vary by brand, model and software version. If you cannot find the scan option, check that the TV is on its TV source; for example, Samsung says its Broadcasting menu is unavailable when another source is selected. Samsung’s channel-scan instructions explain that requirement.

Find the channel scan on your TV
Samsung TVs
- Change the source to TV.
- Open Settings or All Settings > Broadcasting > Auto Program.
- Select Start, then choose Air for an antenna and begin the scan.
Samsung notes that Broadcasting is greyed out unless the TV source is selected. See Samsung Support.
Roku TVs
Connect the antenna to Ant/Cable In, then open Home > Live TV and follow the setup prompts. If Live TV is not shown on the Home screen, go to Settings > TV inputs > Live TV > Set up input. To scan again later, use Settings > TV inputs > Live TV > Scan for channels. Roku says a scan may take a few minutes. Details: Roku’s cable and antenna TV setup guide.

LG TVs with webOS
For 2021-or-later TVs running webOS 6.0 or later, LG lists this path: Settings > All Settings > General > Channels > Channel Tuning > Auto Tuning > Start > Done.
For 2020-or-earlier TVs running webOS 5.0 or earlier, use Settings > All Settings > Channels > Channel Tuning > Auto Tuning > Start > Done. LG cautions that names can vary by model and software. Its antenna and Auto Tuning guide also explains when tuning is not required.
Sony TVs
Sony’s path depends on model and software. Its guidance for Android TV includes Settings > Channel Set-up > Digital Set-up > Digital Tuning > Digital Auto Tuning. For Android 9 Pie, Sony lists Watching TV > Channels > Channel setup > Auto tuning > Digital (Terrestrial). Consult Sony’s instructions for digital auto tuning if your menus differ.

Vizio TVs
Vizio menu paths are model-specific. In the manual for the older E221A1 model, the steps are to set Tuner Mode to Antenna, open Tuner > Auto Channel Scan, wait for the scan to finish, choose Done and exit. That manual says a new scan clears the channel list on this model, so do not assume the path or behavior applies to other Vizio TVs. Vizio E221A1 user manual.

Check the connection and setup before replacing equipment. Work through these checks, scanning again after a change that could affect reception:
- Verify the input and tuner mode. Make sure the coax cable is firmly connected to the antenna input, the TV is on its broadcast/live-TV source, and the tuner is set to antenna/air rather than cable. On Samsung, the scan menu is unavailable when another source is selected. Samsung and Roku document these setup requirements.
- Inspect the coax cable and connectors. Look for loose fittings or visible damage. Roku recommends trying another coax cable if the existing one appears damaged. Roku’s troubleshooting guidance.
- Adjust the antenna position. Try a higher location near a window, away from thick walls, metal and large obstructions. Face local towers where possible. Reception depends on location and antenna placement, so channel availability can vary. Roku and LG offer placement guidance.
- Scan again after moving the antenna. A fresh scan lets the tuner check the new position. Sony also advises rescanning to find new broadcast services, which a TV may not add automatically. Roku; Sony.
- Check an antenna amplifier. If the antenna is amplified, make sure the amplifier has power. Roku cautions that an unpowered amplifier can block the signal; it also notes that a signal that is too strong can overload the TV tuner. Roku’s troubleshooting steps.
- Use the set-top box input if you have one. Select the HDMI input connected to the box; the TV’s antenna Auto Tuning scan is not needed for a set-top box. LG’s setup guide.
What a scan can—and cannot—do
A scan programs the TV’s tuner with broadcast channels it can detect through the connected antenna at that time. It does not improve the antenna signal or guarantee a particular channel count. Location, antenna placement and the condition of the connection all affect what appears. If reception changes after repositioning the antenna, scan again so the channel list reflects the new setup.
