Choose the NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro if you want USB storage expansion, Gigabit Ethernet, or the home-theater audio formats NVIDIA lists. Choose the Amazon Fire TV Cube (3rd Gen, 2022) if hands-free Alexa and an HDMI input for compatible connected devices matter more. Both target 4K streaming, but the manufacturers’ specifications do not establish which is faster in everyday use, which has the better overall app experience, or which currently costs less.
At a glance: which device fits your setup?
| Your priority | Better fit based on listed features | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Local media storage, USB expansion, or wired networking | NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro | It has two USB 3.0 ports, storage expandable by USB, and Gigabit Ethernet. Those features do not guarantee support for every file, app, or media server. |
| Home-theater audio format support | NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro | NVIDIA lists Dolby Atmos and pass-through support for Dolby TrueHD, DTS:X, and DTS-HD. Actual playback depends on the app, source, receiver, and connected display chain. |
| Hands-free voice control or an HDMI input for another device | Fire TV Cube (3rd Gen, 2022) | Amazon lists hands-free Alexa and HDMI input for compatible devices; that does not promise universal control of everything connected. |
| 4K and HDR | Either may suit a compatible setup | Both are positioned for 4K. NVIDIA lists Dolby Vision and HDR10; Amazon’s technical table lists HDR10. Check the display and the streaming service you use. |
| Wi-Fi 6E | Unclear from Amazon’s reviewed documentation | Amazon’s overview and launch announcement say Wi-Fi 6E, while its technical specification table lists 802.11ac dual-band. Verify the exact model documentation before buying on this basis. |

Why choose NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro?
SHIELD TV Pro is the more clearly documented fit for a setup built around local media, external drives, wired networking, or an AV receiver. NVIDIA lists 16 GB of internal storage, expandable with USB flash drives or hard drives, alongside two USB 3.0 Type-A ports and Gigabit Ethernet. Its specifications also list Wi-Fi 802.11ac 2×2 MIMO on 2.4 and 5 GHz, Bluetooth 5.0 + LE, and HDMI 2.0b with HDCP 2.2 and CEC.
For local media and connected storage
The USB ports and expandable storage make it easier to add storage directly to the device than the listed Fire TV Cube configuration, which has 16 GB internal storage. This is a hardware distinction, not a guarantee that every video format, USB drive, app, or server will work as you expect; confirm support for your particular playback software and media library.

For an AVR or home theater
NVIDIA lists Dolby Atmos, Dolby TrueHD pass-through, DTS:X pass-through, and DTS-HD pass-through over HDMI. These specifications make SHIELD TV Pro worth considering when your receiver and media sources use those formats. They do not establish that every streaming app or file will pass every format through; the source, app, receiver, and TV or HDMI chain all matter.
For HDR and upscaling
NVIDIA lists Dolby Vision HDR and HDR10, as well as AI-enhanced upscaling up to 4K at 60 FPS. These are supported capabilities, not a comparative image-quality result. Your display, content, settings, and source resolution affect what you see.

Platform and hardware details
NVIDIA specifies Android TV powered by Android 11, Chromecast 4K built in, a Tegra X1+ processor with a 256-core GPU, and 3 GB of RAM. The product page also lists SHIELD Experience software upgrades from NVIDIA. These details describe the product; they are not an independent assessment of current app availability or long-term software support.

Why choose Fire TV Cube (3rd Gen, 2022)?
The Cube’s distinguishing listed features are hands-free Alexa and an HDMI input. Amazon’s device page identifies the model as Fire TV Cube, 3rd Gen (2022), and lists Fire OS 7, 16 GB of storage, 2 GB of RAM, an Amlogic POP1-G octa-core SoC, a four-microphone array, HDR10, and 4K Ultra HD positioning.

- Works with SHIELD TV 2015/2017/2019 models. Requires upgrade to the latest SHIELD Experience.
- Easy to use in the most darkly lit room. Pick up the remote and the buttons will instantly light up.
- Press the microphone button to access the powerful Google Assistant on your Android TV. Search for new movies, TV shows, or YouTube videos, look up stock prices, or check your commute time, all on your SHIELD TV.
- Customize your menu button with more than 25 choices. Launch your favorite app, enable AI upscaling, or mute your sound, or more! Different options can be applied to up to 3 actions: single press, double press, long press.
- Control your home entertainment center with SHIELD Remote’s built in IR blaster. Control volume, power, or input source.
Hands-free Alexa and connected devices
The built-in microphone array and hands-free Alexa are a good fit if you want voice control without picking up a remote for every request. The HDMI input is intended for compatible connected devices. Check that the specific equipment and control functions you need are supported; the specification does not promise that every device plugged into the input can be controlled universally.
Amazon’s Wi-Fi 6E documentation conflicts
Amazon’s device page and its September 28, 2022 launch announcement describe Wi-Fi 6E, but the same device page’s technical Wi-Fi row lists 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, 2×2 MIMO, dual-band 2.4/5 GHz. Because these official descriptions do not agree, do not treat Wi-Fi 6E support as settled from those sources alone. Confirm the exact unit’s current documentation if Wi-Fi generation is a deciding factor.

- Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
Amazon’s launch announcement also called the Cube “20% more powerful than the previous generation.” That is Amazon’s 2022 comparison with the prior Cube, not an independent benchmark and not a comparison with SHIELD TV Pro. Read the Amazon launch announcement in that context.

Check 4K and HDR compatibility before you buy
For SHIELD TV Pro, NVIDIA says 4K Ultra HD content requires a 4K display with an HDMI input that supports HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2. Its guide also covers enabling HDR or Dolby Vision in device and TV settings, and notes that cable quality can prevent Dolby Vision from being enabled. Start by checking the specific TV input and its settings, then follow NVIDIA’s setup guidance if HDR is unavailable.
Amazon’s reviewed technical table lists HDR10 for the Cube. The formats listed by the manufacturers are not a full service-by-service compatibility audit, so also confirm that your display and the streaming services you use support the formats you want.
What the specifications cannot tell you
- Which feels faster: neither cited manufacturer page provides an independent, head-to-head performance test. Amazon’s “20% more powerful” figure compares its 2022 Cube with the previous Cube, not with SHIELD TV Pro.
- Which has the better app experience: the available product specifications do not establish a current, complete app catalog or a neutral comparison of the two platforms.
- Which is the better value today: the cited pages do not establish current prices or stock. Check current listings in your region before making a price-based decision.
Final buying decision
Pick SHIELD TV Pro when its USB expansion, Gigabit Ethernet, or listed audio pass-through formats solve a specific need in your media setup. Pick the Fire TV Cube (3rd Gen, 2022) when hands-free Alexa or the HDMI input for compatible equipment is more useful to you. If your choice hinges on real-world speed, app coverage, current cost, or the Cube’s Wi-Fi 6E claim, the cited manufacturer specifications alone are not enough to settle it.
