To troubleshoot a Fire TV Cube that buffers, first find out whether the trouble is between the Cube and your router, between the router and the internet, or limited to one streaming app. Check Settings > Network and open Network Status, then try the low-risk steps below: restart the Cube, restart your modem and router, test Ethernet if practical, and address an app-specific problem only if other apps work normally.
1. Find out where the connection is slowing down
On the Cube, open Settings > Network, select your connected network, and choose Network Status. Amazon says this tool reports the connection from Fire TV to the router separately from the router’s connection to the internet. That distinction helps narrow the cause: a weak device-to-router link points toward local Wi-Fi or placement, while a problem on the router-to-internet link may involve the home connection or a wider outage. Some compatible models also display a download speed test and advanced details; what appears depends on the device. Amazon’s Network Status instructions do not establish a universal speed threshold for Cube streaming.

If several devices in the home are offline or slow, investigate the network or internet service before changing settings on the Cube. If only one app buffers while other apps stream normally, skip to the app-specific steps below.
2. Restart the Fire TV Cube
A restart is a sensible first reset for a temporary playback or connection problem. Unplug the Cube’s power cable, wait 10 seconds, then reconnect it and let the device start up. Amazon includes a device restart in its Fire TV streaming troubleshooting steps and its Wi-Fi troubleshooting instructions.

3. Restart the modem and router
If the Cube still buffers, reset the home network equipment. Amazon recommends unplugging both the modem and router for one minute. Reconnect the modem first and wait for it to connect, then reconnect the router. Once the network is back, check playback again. If possible, temporarily move the Cube or router closer together to see whether distance or obstacles are weakening Wi-Fi. If other devices are also affected, check whether your internet provider has an outage.
These steps can refresh a home connection, but they cannot establish or fix a problem in the internet service beyond your home network.

4. Test Ethernet to separate Wi-Fi from other causes
If you can connect the Cube to your router by Ethernet, try a wired connection and test the same stream again. Amazon specifically recommends an Ethernet test for Cube streaming issues. The Cube setup guide documents an Ethernet port and wired-connection option; adapter needs can vary by model, so check the setup information for your Cube before buying anything. Amazon’s streaming page refers to an included Ethernet adapter, while the Cube setup guide describes the Ethernet connection.
If playback improves over Ethernet, wireless conditions are likely contributing; consider router placement or Wi-Fi coverage. If it still buffers, Wi-Fi may not be the main cause. Ethernet does not increase the speed supplied by your internet provider or resolve congestion or an issue at a streaming service.

5. Clear data only for an app that is misbehaving
When other apps work and the problem is isolated to one, clear that app’s data rather than resetting the whole Cube. This removes the app’s stored data, and you will need to sign in again afterward.
- Open Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications.
- Select the affected app, then choose Force Stop and Clear Data. Follow any on-screen prompts.
- Briefly unplug the Cube from power, reconnect it, and try the app again.
Amazon’s app data instructions warn that clearing data requires signing in to the app again. If the app still fails after that, the issue may be with the app or its service rather than the Cube’s general connection.

6. Consider Wi-Fi upgrades only if the checks point to coverage
A router or mesh system is not a universal fix for buffering. Consider improving Wi-Fi only if Network Status, the wired-versus-wireless test, or poor signal in the Cube’s location points to a coverage problem. Amazon suggests mesh routers for larger homes and notes that Wi-Fi 6E-capable routers may benefit compatible Fire TV devices. That does not mean every Cube supports Wi-Fi 6E. Amazon also recommends using the same network name for the 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz bands so a device can connect to a suitable band. Check your Cube and router compatibility before relying on a particular band or buying new equipment. Amazon’s Wi-Fi guidance gives general advice, not a finding that your router needs replacement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems7. Check Fire OS updates for your Cube generation
Fire OS versions differ among first-, second-, and third-generation Fire TV Cubes, so identify your generation before comparing version numbers. Amazon says Fire TV devices download software updates automatically when they are online; consult its Fire TV software update page for the current version information. Version numbers can change, and updating is not a substitute for diagnosing a weak network or a problem affecting just one app.

What the results tell you
- Network Status flags the Cube-to-router link: focus on Wi-Fi signal, placement, or a wired test.
- Network Status flags the router-to-internet link, or multiple devices have trouble: check modem/router operation and whether your internet provider has an outage.
- Ethernet works better than Wi-Fi: investigate wireless coverage or interference in the Cube’s location.
- Only one app has trouble: use that app’s Force Stop and Clear Data steps, knowing you will sign in again.
- All checks look normal but buffering continues: the available checks do not identify the cause; a service-side issue or other network condition may still be involved.
