Choose an ergonomic chair by how well its adjustments fit your body and workstation—not by the label alone. Prioritize seat height and depth, backrest and lumbar support, and armrests you can position comfortably. The seat should support your thighs without pressing behind your knees, and your feet should rest on the floor or a suitable footrest.
Start with fit, not the word “ergonomic”
There is no single chair shape or set of dimensions that fits everyone. The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) puts it plainly: “A basic rule of ergonomics is that there is no such thing as an ‘average’ person.” A chair is a reasonable candidate when its adjustment range works for the person using it and the desk where they work.

When possible, try several chairs before buying. OSHA recommends testing different chairs and trying the chosen chair over an extended period to assess comfort and fit. A quick sit can reveal an obvious mismatch, but it may not tell you how the chair feels during longer work.

Seat height
Set the chair in relation to the work surface while keeping your feet supported. Your feet should rest on the floor or on a footrest, rather than hang unsupported. OSHA’s purchasing checklist gives a seat-height range of 15–22 inches as a guide; OSHA also cautions that its criteria may not accommodate every body type. Treat that range as a reference, not a universal target.

Seat depth and width
The seat should support your thighs while leaving the back of your knees free of pressure. You should be able to sit back against the backrest rather than perch forward because the seat is too deep. Look for an adjustable seat depth, especially if a fixed seat pan does not let you achieve both conditions. OSHA notes that a backrest that only tilts may not provide enough adjustment for many users.
Width matters too: the seat should accommodate your body without constriction. OSHA’s purchasing checklist gives a seat-pan length of 15–17 inches and a width of about 18 inches minimum. These are agency guide dimensions, not guarantees that a chair will fit a particular person.

Backrest and lumbar support
Look for a backrest that follows the natural curve of your spine and supports your lower back. Adjustable lumbar support can help you position that support where it is useful for you. OSHA’s purchasing checklist also recommends a backrest recline of at least 15 degrees with a lock or tension adjustment. These features are screening criteria, not a promise of comfort; assess how the backrest feels in your working posture.

Armrests should support your lower arms while your shoulders remain relaxed and your upper arms stay close to your body. They should not stop you from moving close enough to the desk. OSHA lists 7–10.5 inches above the seat pan as a purchasing-guide range, but the more important test is whether the armrests work for your body and workstation. If they cannot be adjusted to do that, or they obstruct desk access, remove them or avoid using them.

Base and casters
A stable five-point base is recommended by both OSHA and CCOHS. Choose casters suited to the floor where the chair will be used; caster compatibility affects how the chair moves and behaves on that surface.
How to judge seat materials
OSHA calls for seat and back materials that are firm, breathable, and resilient. CCOHS recommends breathable, non-slippery seat fabric. Use those qualities as comfort and task-suitability considerations—not as substitutes for checking fit and adjustment range. In settings where infection control matters, CCOHS notes that other surface materials may be appropriate.

Set up the chair with the workstation
A chair does not work in isolation from the desk and input devices. Adjust it alongside monitor, keyboard, and desk placement so that the posture and reach are workable together. If you have to raise the chair to align with a fixed-height work surface and your feet then cannot rest on the floor, a footrest may provide support. CCOHS recommends one when the desk is not adjustable; OSHA also identifies a footrest as an option for unsupported feet.

- Can you adjust seat height to the work surface and keep your feet supported?
- Does seat depth support your thighs without pressing behind your knees, while allowing you to sit against the backrest?
- Does the backrest support your lower back, and can you position its lumbar support comfortably?
- Can the armrests support your lower arms with relaxed shoulders without blocking access to the desk?
- Does the seat surface feel comfortable and suit the work setting?
- Is the base stable, and are the casters appropriate for your floor?
- Can you try the chair before purchase and assess comfort over a longer period?
OSHA’s numerical dimensions are useful comparison points, but an individual fit check should decide between chairs. No specific chair model can be identified as the best choice without current model-specific evidence and a defined user profile.
