Use the HP app, choose the OfficeJet Pro 8125, select a Document scan, and save the result as Basic PDF. Put one sheet on the glass or a stack in the automatic document feeder (ADF). The app lets you add pages, correct edges, rotate or reorder them, and save the finished pages as one PDF.
What you need before scanning
Install or open the current HP app from 123.hp.com, then add the OfficeJet Pro 8125. HP is introducing the HP app as the replacement for HP Smart where it is available. HP Smart remains the full-feature option on systems that have not yet received the newer app, so use whichever HP application is offered for your operating system.

- The OfficeJet Pro 8125 must be powered on and connected to the computer or mobile device through a working communication path.
- Use the scanner glass for a single sheet, a fragile original, a book page, or an item that cannot go through the feeder.
- Use the ADF for loose, same-size documents that you want to process as a batch.
- Have a local folder or an available cloud destination ready if you want to save outside the app’s default location.
Remove staples, paper clips, sticky notes and torn scraps before loading the ADF. Keep the glass clean and place originals squarely; a crooked original can make edge detection and page order harder to correct later.
Glass or ADF: which source should you use?

The ADF is normally the efficient choice for a stack, but the glass gives you better control over unusual originals. For ordinary paperwork, choose the Document preset rather than Photo.
How to scan one document to PDF
- Open the HP app and select the printer. Launch the HP app, choose the OfficeJet Pro 8125, and open its scan tile. Depending on the app version, the command may be labelled Scan or Printer Scan.
- Choose the document preset. Select Document. If your version offers a Batch option and you are preparing a multi-page job, select it instead.
- Load the original. For the glass, place the page face down against the indicated corner and close the lid. For the ADF, place the pages face up in the feeder and adjust the guides so the stack is straight.
- Set the source. Select Scanner Glass, Document Feeder or Automatic under Source or Input Source. Do not leave the app on a different source when the original is loaded elsewhere.
- Set paper size and scan area. Choose the paper size that matches the original, or use the available automatic area option. A correct size reduces the chance of excess white space or clipped edges.
- Choose resolution. HP gives 300 dpi as an example of normal quality and 1200 dpi as an example of high quality. Use the lower setting when readable office text is the goal; reserve the higher setting for originals where fine detail matters. A higher resolution generally takes longer and creates a larger file.
- Choose color mode. Use grayscale when the page is text and color is unnecessary. Use color for forms, stamps, annotations, photographs or any detail whose meaning depends on color.
- Start the scan. Click or tap Scan. Wait for the preview to appear before moving the original or loading another page.
- Correct the detected edges. If the app displays edge detection, choose Auto or Full. If the boundary is wrong, drag the blue boundary points to the actual page edges and apply the correction.
- Inspect the preview. Rotate a sideways page, edit a crop, replace a poor scan or remove an unwanted page before saving. This is the point to catch a clipped margin, a dark border or an upside-down page.
- Save as PDF. Choose Save (or Share/Save), enter a meaningful file name, set File Type to Basic PDF, and select a local folder or cloud destination.
Opening the saved file once is worthwhile. Check that every page is present, readable and upright before sending it or deleting the originals.

How to scan multiple pages into one PDF
HP’s supported workflow is to scan the batch and save it as a single Basic PDF. The ADF is the practical starting point for loose pages, while the glass works when you need to process pages individually.
ADF batch workflow
- Load the pages face up in the ADF, align the guides, and select the OfficeJet Pro 8125 in the HP app.
- Open Scan or Printer Scan, choose Document (or Batch where offered), and set Source/Input Source to Document Feeder or Automatic.
- Choose the paper size, resolution and color mode, then start the scan.
- Review the complete preview. Use the page controls to rotate, edit, replace or remove pages. Reorder pages if the physical stack was loaded in the wrong order or a page needs moving.
- Use + Add if you need to scan another sheet from the glass or feeder, or import another page offered by the app.
- When the page set is correct, choose Save or Share/Save, select Basic PDF, name the file and choose its destination.
Do not save each page separately if the goal is one document. Keep adding pages in the same scan session and select Basic PDF only after the preview contains the entire set.

Place the first page on the glass, scan it, then select + Add in the preview. Replace the original with the next page, keep the same settings unless the page requires a different treatment, and continue until all pages are present. Use the preview’s reorder control to match the intended reading sequence before saving.
Two-sided originals
For a two-sided document, scan the ADF batch and use the app’s page-order and editing controls to put fronts and backs in the correct sequence. The OfficeJet Pro 8125 material cited for this workflow does not specify automatic duplex-scan behavior, so do not assume that both sides will be captured automatically. If the backs are not included, scan those sides as an additional set and use + Add to combine them, then check the final order page by page.

Choosing scan settings that fit the document
Document versus Photo
Document is intended for paperwork and exposes the workflow needed to combine pages into a PDF. Photo is more appropriate when the original is primarily an image. Selecting the wrong preset can produce an unnecessarily large file or less useful processing for text.
Resolution

These are HP’s example values, not a promise that every document needs either setting. Start with the lowest resolution that preserves the detail you actually need.

Color
- Grayscale: a good choice for black text when colored information is irrelevant.
- Color: use it for colored forms, stamps, signatures, highlighting, photographs and diagrams where color carries information.
Output format
Choose PDF for contracts, receipts, applications, notes and other page-based documents. Choose JPEG or PNG when the result is an image rather than a document set. For a multi-page PDF, the app’s Basic PDF file type is the relevant choice.
Fixing edge, orientation and page-order problems
Edges are cropped or the background is included
When the preview shows edge detection, try Auto first. Choose Full if the app is cutting off a margin, or drag the blue boundary points around the actual page and apply the change. A correctly selected paper size and a page placed squarely on the glass also reduce correction work.

A page is sideways or upside down
Use the preview’s rotate control before saving. For a batch, inspect the thumbnail sequence rather than correcting only the first page; one sheet may have entered the feeder in a different orientation.
Pages are in the wrong order
Select the affected thumbnails and use the preview’s reorder controls. If a page was not scanned, use + Add to capture or import it, then place it at the correct position.

The PDF is too large
Scan text at a sensible resolution such as HP’s 300 dpi example, use grayscale when color is not needed, and avoid scanning an image-oriented page as a high-resolution color document unless that detail is required. The app’s higher-resolution settings increase both file size and scan time.
What to do when the HP scanner is not detected
When the printer or scanner does not appear, work through the connection and software checks before changing scan settings. HP maintains separate guidance for scanner-not-found problems, missing scan options and HP app availability.

- Confirm the HP app is installed. Install or update it only through HP’s official paths, beginning at 123.hp.com. If the newer HP app is unavailable for your system, use HP Smart.
- Confirm the OfficeJet Pro 8125 is added. Open the app’s printer list and check that this exact printer is present rather than merely installed as a print-only device.
- Check communication. The device running the app and the printer must be able to communicate through the configured connection. If the app cannot communicate, scanning options may be absent even when the printer appears powered on.
- Reopen the printer’s scan tile. Select Scan or Printer Scan again and look for the source and document controls. A missing scan tile indicates an app or detection issue, not a PDF file-type problem.
- Update or reinstall HP software through HP. Use HP’s official support route for the scanner-not-found or no-scan-options case. Avoid downloading a third-party repair utility for the normal OfficeJet Pro 8125 scanning workflow.
- Recheck after the software change. Once the printer is visible in the app, select the source, run a one-page test scan and confirm that the preview appears before attempting a full batch.
If the app is available but offers no scan choices, verify that you opened the printer’s scan function rather than a print or copy function, and that the OfficeJet Pro 8125 was added successfully. If the newer HP app is not offered on your system, switching to HP Smart is the supported alternative described by HP.

- The correct printer, OfficeJet Pro 8125, is selected in the HP app.
- The original was loaded on the intended source: glass or ADF.
- The source, paper size, resolution and color mode match the document.
- The preset is Document unless the material is genuinely a photo.
- Every page appears in the preview, in reading order.
- Edges are not clipped, and no unwanted borders or blank pages remain.
- Pages are upright and two-sided originals have both sides in the intended sequence.
- File Type is set to Basic PDF.
- The saved file opens from the selected local or cloud destination.
Common questions
Can the OfficeJet Pro 8125 scan directly to a single PDF?
Yes. In the HP app, keep the pages in one scan session, use the preview to add and arrange them, then select Basic PDF when saving.

What does “Automatic” mean for the source?
It is an available source choice in some HP app versions that lets the app determine whether to use the glass or feeder. If the result is wrong, select Scanner Glass or Document Feeder explicitly.

Why is Basic PDF the right file type?
Basic PDF is the HP app’s document output choice for combining the pages in the preview into one PDF file.
Can I edit a scan before saving?
Yes. The preview supports rotation, editing, replacement, removal, page additions and reordering. Edge-detection controls let you accept an automatic boundary, use the full page or adjust blue boundary points manually.
Should text documents be scanned in color?
Only when color conveys information, such as a stamp, colored form field, photograph or highlighted annotation. Otherwise, grayscale avoids unnecessary color data.
Is a separate repair program required when scanning fails?
No third-party repair utility is required for the normal workflow. Use HP’s official app and support paths for installation, scanner detection and missing scan-option problems.
