On Windows, Norton’s documented method is to open Security > Scans, choose Custom Scan, run Drive Scan, select the USB flash drive, and start the scan. These labels come from Norton’s 2016 Norton 360 manual; current menus can vary by version, so look for the equivalent custom or drive scan if your interface differs.
Scan a USB flash drive in Norton 360 on Windows
Norton’s 2016 Norton 360 manual describes scanning selected drives, including removable media, with a custom drive scan. Follow these steps if the labels match your Norton installation:

- Connect the USB flash drive to your Windows PC.
- Open Norton Device Security and go to Security > Scans.
- Choose Custom Scan, then select Drive Scan.
- Select the USB drive itself in the drive list. Check the selection before proceeding so you scan the intended device.
- Click Scan and wait for the scan to finish.
- Review any results that Norton flags and follow the options shown in Norton.
The path and labels above are documented in the Norton 360: Product Manual (2016), not confirmed as the current Windows interface. Norton versions and builds may present scanning options differently. If you do not see these exact labels, look in the scan area for a custom scan or an option to scan selected drives; do not assume every Norton plan uses the same menu.

Scan an external drive in Norton on Mac
Norton’s Mac documentation uses Targeted Scan for scanning a specific folder or connected external drive. Open Security > Scans, start Targeted Scan, then choose the external drive or folder when prompted. Windows’ Drive Scan labels do not necessarily apply on Mac.

Norton describes suspicious files as quarantined by default in the Mac targeted-scan workflow. Review the results and the available actions in Norton rather than assuming the same prompts or labels apply across operating systems. Norton also warns that exclusions reduce protection, so avoid excluding a file or drive casually.
Targeted USB scan or full-system scan?

Do not confuse a USB scan with creating Norton Rescue Disk
Norton Rescue Disk is a separate, bootable recovery tool. It can scan selected folders or disks after you start the computer from the rescue media. Creating that media erases the destination USB drive, so back up anything important on it first. Do not use this process merely to scan an existing flash drive while Windows is running.
Norton’s support page states: “All data in the USB drive gets erased to create your Rescue Disk.” It also describes the scan scope as “Selected folders/disks: scans only specific folders or disks on the computer.” See Norton Support: Scan and resolve threats using Norton Rescue Disk for its instructions and warnings.
