A Windows answer file can automate many of the choices Windows Setup would otherwise ask you to make. It is an XML file, commonly named Autounattend.xml when Windows Setup should discover it automatically from removable media. It handles only the supported settings you put in it—not every app, driver, update, account task, or personal preference on a finished PC.
What a Windows answer file does
Microsoft calls this an Unattend file or answer file. It supplies Windows Setup with selected configuration choices, such as disk partitioning, the Windows image location, a product key, account names, and display settings. The exact settings available depend on the Windows image and the stage of setup in which they apply. See Microsoft’s Answer Files Overview and answer-file documentation.

That scope matters when describing a “whole install.” A file can suppress setup pages for which it provides applicable settings, and it can run documented commands in relevant phases. It does not, by itself, establish that all desired software, drivers, updates, or post-install personalization will be done. Configure and test the tasks you actually need.

Windows groups answer-file settings into configuration passes. A setting placed in the wrong pass, or one that does not apply to the image being installed, may not take effect. Microsoft documents these common passes:

Windows System Image Manager (Windows SIM), distributed with the Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (ADK), is Microsoft’s tool for creating and editing answer files associated with a Windows image. Associating the file with the relevant image or catalog helps check that settings are valid for that image. Start with Microsoft’s answer-file instructions and overview of answer files.
Create and use an Autounattend.xml file
- Prepare the Windows image and answer file in Windows SIM. Install the Windows ADK, open Windows SIM, and create or edit an answer file associated with the Windows image you intend to install. Add only the settings you need, and place each in the configuration pass where it applies.
- Save a clean source copy. Keep the editable answer file somewhere safe, separate from the copy Windows Setup will process.
- Put the file on removable media for automatic discovery. Save it with the exact name
Autounattend.xmlat the root of a USB drive. Microsoft documents using the Windows installation USB alongside a separate USB containing the answer file. The instructions do not prescribe a particular drive brand or capacity. - Boot the PC into Windows Setup. Setup searches supported locations for answer files. For the documented removable-media workflow, the filename and root location are significant. You can also provide the file explicitly using Windows Setup’s
/unattend:option. Follow Microsoft’s Windows Setup automation instructions. - Check what Setup still asks. When applicable settings for a page are present, Setup can omit that page. If required settings are absent or incorrect, Setup normally displays the relevant interface rather than silently completing that choice.
Keep the original separate from Setup’s cached copy
Windows Setup caches and annotates answer files as installation proceeds and reboots occur. Microsoft warns against modifying or reusing the cached answer file in %WINDIR%Panther. Keep your clean authoring copy outside that location, and make changes to the source file before a later installation rather than treating the cached copy as a reusable template. See Microsoft’s Windows Setup automation overview.

When a provisioning package is a better fit
Windows Configuration Designer is a different route for configuring Windows client devices: it creates provisioning packages rather than Windows Setup answer files. Microsoft describes it as a tool used primarily by IT departments for business or education BYOD and supplied devices. Its command-line interface builds a package from customization XML, requires an administrator command window, and supports encryption options. Consult Microsoft’s Windows Configuration Designer command-line instructions and installation guidance.

| Approach | What it creates | Typical role |
|---|---|---|
| Windows SIM with an unattend answer file | XML settings associated with a Windows image | Automates applicable choices during Windows Setup |
| Windows Configuration Designer | A provisioning package built from customizations | Configures Windows client devices through a provisioning workflow |
These tools address related but distinct workflows; a provisioning package is not simply another name for an answer file. For a repeatable installation process, choose based on whether you need to supply setup-time answers or provision a device through a package.

What to verify before relying on unattended setup
- Confirm the answer file is associated with the Windows image you will install and that each setting belongs to an applicable configuration pass.
- Test the actual installation path and verify which pages are skipped and which still require input.
- Keep an untouched source copy; do not use Setup’s cached Panther file as your master.
- Plan separately for software and other post-install tasks not represented by settings or commands in the answer file.
- Do not assume customizations survive a Windows reset: Microsoft notes that settings may be lost when built-in recovery tools are used, so preserving them requires a separate recovery design.
