Leandro Barbosa’s project shows how Sanity can be extended into a custom social-content workflow: structured client and campaign records feed AI-assisted drafts, internal and client reviews, and a human approval gate before Instagram publishing. Barbosa says he connected a real Instagram Business account and published an approved post from the app. That is his reported project result, not a guarantee that every account or configuration will work the same way.
What the project does
In a project article posted September 28, 2026, Leandro Barbosa describes Sanity Social, also called Social Studio: an agency-oriented social content operating system built as an app inside the Sanity Dashboard. Its stated workflow is:

Rather than treating captions as isolated text, the system models the information around a post and its progress. Barbosa describes records for clients, brand guidelines, campaigns, social posts, and workflow and publishing state. The design is intended to keep content context and review status together through publication.

How the workflow is structured
Brand and campaign context
For AI-assisted drafting, the app can draw on structured details such as a client’s brand voice, target audience, content pillars, preferred and forbidden vocabulary, calls to action, campaign objective, and key messages. This gives a draft more context than a blank prompt, while leaving editorial judgment with people.
Review and publishing gate
The described process separates internal review from client review. Human approval is required before a post can move to Instagram; Barbosa says AI helps draft and refine writing but does not approve or publish content. This division makes the approval state a meaningful part of the workflow rather than a suggestion embedded in a prompt.

Sanity app and backend
The app uses Sanity’s App SDK and Sanity UI inside the Dashboard, with Content Lake holding content and workflow state. A small Next.js backend is described as the sole location for secrets. The article says Sanity Workflows manage editorial review and Sanity Functions orchestrate work. These are implementation choices in Barbosa’s design, not a security recommendation or a claim that the same architecture suits every agency.

Its introductory documentation calls Sanity “a fully customizable all-code backend for all your content-driven websites and apps—their builders and creators.” That is Sanity’s description of its own product. Its developer documentation covers the App SDK, JavaScript and TypeScript client, Next.js integrations, schemas, and asset APIs: Sanity APIs and SDKs.

What the Instagram test establishes
Barbosa reports configuring Meta OAuth, access for a professional account, Supabase, secure token storage, and a deployed backend, then publishing an approved post to the Instagram Business account @1367.studio from Social Studio. He also reports 72 passing tests — Leandro Barbosa, 2026 — covering workflow behavior, publishing validation, Meta API errors, OAuth protection, and duplicate-publishing prevention.
Those are project-specific reports. They do not independently verify the live application, establish a general reliability level, or show that all Instagram account types, permissions, regions, media formats, or configurations will behave identically. Instagram’s publishing requirements and platform APIs can change, so an implementation needs to be checked against the current requirements for the account and content types it will support.

Custom app or existing Sanity integration?
A custom build is most relevant when the agency needs a distinctive approval process, a tailored content model, or control over how its app behaves. It also brings development, deployment, security, and ongoing maintenance work. A prebuilt integration may reduce the amount of custom workflow code, but its current capabilities and requirements need to be checked with its provider.

| Consideration | Custom Sanity app | Existing integration |
|---|---|---|
| Editorial workflow fit | Can be designed around a specific client, campaign, and approval process; the fit depends on what is built. | Depends on the provider’s current workflow and configuration options. |
| Control over app and content model | Greater control over the app and structured content, with corresponding implementation responsibility. | Bounded by the integration’s available features and data model. |
| Implementation and maintenance | Requires building and maintaining the app and its publishing connection. | May avoid some custom development; provider requirements and ongoing support vary. |
| Supported accounts and post types | Must be implemented and validated for the intended accounts and formats. | Must be confirmed with the provider; directory listings can change. |

Sanity Exchange lists Zernio Social Publishing as a third-party option for planning, previewing, and publishing Instagram and Facebook posts from Sanity Studio through the Zernio API. The listing describes posts stored as dataset documents, a calendar and filtered post list, previews, settings, connected profiles, and per-type validation. It lists Instagram feed, carousel, story, and reel, as well as Facebook feed, story, and reel. Treat those as directory-listing claims, not a guarantee of present availability or account support; check current features and requirements with Zernio.

The same Exchange page lists Instagram Embed separately. Embedding existing Instagram posts, reels, or IGTV videos in article content is a different use case from planning and publishing new social posts.
Sanity’s guide to external data describes two broad patterns: sync external items into Sanity documents, or store selected external information as a field value. Document syncing makes external data available through Sanity and may allow two-way synchronization, but needs more infrastructure and can lag changes at the source. Field-based selection can be simpler, while stored values can become stale. These are general integration patterns, not a description of how Barbosa implemented Instagram publishing: Sanity’s guide to integrating external data sources.

Barbosa says he initially considered a multi-tenant SaaS architecture involving custom authentication, tenant provisioning, and Supabase row-level security, then narrowed the project to focus on a Sanity-native app. The published project is therefore best understood as an application build demonstrating a content workflow, not evidence of a complete commercial SaaS launch. The project article is Leandro Barbosa’s September 28, 2026 write-up.

If those needs are common and a listed integration meets them, a provider’s current supported accounts, content types, and requirements are the practical checks to make before choosing.
