For a repeatable local workflow, use cwebp: cwebp -q 80 preview.png -o preview.webp. A website screenshot, a screenshot of one page element, and a small image already displayed on the page are different starting points, but each can end as a WebP thumbnail.
Choose what the thumbnail represents
Decide what a reader should see in the directory card before capturing anything. The right scope depends on the design; there is no universal thumbnail size or capture choice.

- Visible viewport: captures the currently visible browser area. It is quick and useful when the top of a site is enough to identify it.
- Full page: captures the page from top to bottom. This can show more context, but it may make text too small when reduced to a card.
- One element: captures a specific region, such as a hero image or product panel, when that is the intended preview.
- Existing page image: if the directory should show an image already on the site, you may not need a page screenshot; obtain the image through an authorized workflow, then resize and encode it.
Firefox’s screenshot tools document full-page and element captures, and Firefox Support describes full-page and visible-area screenshots. See Firefox Developer Tools: Taking screenshots and Firefox Support: Take screenshots in Firefox.
Capture, resize, and encode a thumbnail
- Capture the chosen scope. Use your browser’s screenshot feature or another authorized capture workflow. Save a full-resolution original if you may want to make differently sized cards later.
- Make a separate card-sized copy. Crop and resize the screenshot to the dimensions your directory layout requires. Keep the aspect ratio appropriate to the card; avoid shrinking the only copy of the original.
- Encode the derivative as WebP. With Google’s
cwebptool installed, run:cwebp -q 80 preview.png -o preview.webp
This uses quality 80 as a starting point, not a universal optimum. Inspect small text, edges, and gradients at the actual display size and adjust quality if needed. The cwebp documentation describes the encoder; Google’s Getting Started with WebP covers use of WebP. - Check the file in the directory. Verify the dimensions, crop, appearance, file format, and that the directory actually serves the WebP file. A filename ending in
.webpalone does not prove that the file was encoded as WebP.
For exact pixel preservation, cwebp also supports lossless encoding. Choose it when preserving detail matters more than minimizing file size, then check the resulting file in your directory.

Use ImageMagick as an alternative converter
ImageMagick can read and write WebP when the installed build has the WebP delegate library available. Support depends on that build, so a command that works on one installation may not work on another. Check the ImageMagick format reference and its WebP encoding options for supported settings. If WebP is unavailable in your installation, use a build with the needed support or use cwebp.
Automate capture and WebP conversion
For a directory that creates thumbnails from URLs automatically, separate the work into two steps: capture a rendered page to an image, then resize and encode that image as WebP. A browser screenshot tool or screenshot API handles page rendering; an image converter such as cwebp handles the WebP output. Keep the original capture if you need to regenerate card sizes or quality settings without recapturing.

If your directory instead fetches an image from another website and uses browser JavaScript to draw it on a canvas, the source server must permit the relevant cross-origin access. Without appropriate CORS permission, the canvas is tainted and exports such as toBlob() or toDataURL() may fail. MDN explains this in Use cross-origin images in a canvas. When the source does not allow browser access, use an authorized server-side fetch or download/capture workflow, then convert the local file.

ScreenshotNeo can capture the rendered page as an image; resize and convert the returned image to your directory’s card dimensions and WebP format. Its API supports PNG, JPEG, or WebP output, plus full-page and element capture options. For a direct capture, request WebP and adapt the target URL:

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie and consent banners are accepted like a visitor and more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools to take screenshots, get page information, and capture PDFs. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Troubleshoot common problems
- The file will not open or is not actually WebP: confirm the converter completed successfully and inspect the file format rather than relying on the extension. Re-encode the source image if needed.
- Text looks soft or edges look damaged: inspect at the actual card size and raise the lossy quality setting, or try lossless encoding if preserving exact detail is more important than file size.
- The page image is incomplete: check whether you captured the viewport rather than the full page, or selected the wrong element. Recapture using the scope the card needs.
- Browser canvas export fails: the remote image may not permit cross-origin canvas use. Use an authorized server-side fetch or another permitted capture workflow instead of trying to bypass the site’s access rules.
- ImageMagick cannot write WebP: the installed build may lack the WebP delegate library. Use a build with WebP support or convert with
cwebp. - The thumbnail is cropped awkwardly or too small: revisit the card’s intended aspect ratio and dimensions, then create a fresh derivative from the original capture.
Check file size and display behavior
WebP does not guarantee a particular reduction in file size. Results vary with the source image and encoding choices, so compare representative screenshots at the dimensions and quality your directory will actually serve. Confirm that the displayed card uses the intended file and that its crop remains readable on the directory’s layout.

Frequently Asked Questions
What quality should I use with cwebp for a website thumbnail?
Start by testing -q 80, then inspect the thumbnail at its actual display size and adjust for text and edge detail.
Does changing a screenshot’s extension to .webp convert it?
No. The image must be encoded as WebP with a converter such as cwebp or a WebP-capable ImageMagick build.
Best Value
Can I make a WebP thumbnail directly from a remote image in browser JavaScript?
Only if the image’s origin permits the relevant cross-origin canvas access; otherwise use an authorized server-side fetch or capture workflow.
