In OBS Studio, save reusable stream settings with a Profile: open the Profile menu, choose New or Duplicate, configure the active profile, and switch profiles when your setup changes. Profiles hold stream, video, and output settings—not your scene layouts. Save those separately in a Scene Collection.
What an OBS Profile saves
OBS Studio’s Profile feature preserves settings primarily related to streaming and recording. The Stream section includes the connected account and stream destination details; Video includes items such as base canvas resolution; and Output covers output modes and related encoding settings. Depending on your configuration, relevant values include the server or destination, stream key, bitrate, canvas and scaled resolution, and frame rate. Profiles do not save scenes, sources, or your full visual layout. OBS states: “Profiles do NOT store your Scenes — use Scene Collections”. If you use two webcams, for example, their placement and other scene-source arrangements belong to a Scene Collection, not the Profile.

- Open OBS Studio and select Profile from the menu at the top of the window.
- Choose New to create a blank profile with default settings, or Duplicate to copy the currently selected profile. Give it a descriptive name, such as “YouTube 1080p” or “Recording.” These are suggested names, not built-in presets.
- With the new profile active, configure the settings you want it to preserve. Check the Stream, Video, and Output sections in OBS Settings.
- Repeat the process for other recurring setups. Use Profile to select the profile you want before a session. You can also use its Rename or Remove commands to manage profiles.
A Profile stores the values you set; it does not automatically tune them for a particular platform, network, or computer. A useful naming convention is to include the destination or purpose and the intended output mode, then review those settings before each stream.

Choose settings for the destination and your connection
There is no single bitrate or resolution that suits every platform and setup. OBS notes that bitrate depends on upload capacity and service limits, and that 60 fps can demand more resources than 30 fps. It also distinguishes the base canvas resolution—the workspace for your scenes—from the output or scaled resolution sent to the stream.
For YouTube specifically, its published encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance recommends H.264 video bitrates of 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps and 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. These are YouTube recommendations for those exact modes, not universal targets. Check YouTube’s current table and your chosen platform’s requirements when configuring a profile.

- Confirm the destination, account, and stream key in the profile you intend to use.
- Match the output resolution and frame rate to the platform, the content, and what your computer can encode reliably.
- Set bitrate and encoder options for the platform’s guidance and your measured upload capacity; leave headroom rather than assuming your connection can sustain its maximum test result.
- Compare profiles by destination/account, resolution and frame rate, bitrate and encoder configuration, and expected connection conditions. If the scene layout also changes, select the matching Scene Collection.
Save scenes separately with a Scene Collection
When you need to preserve or move a complete OBS setup, handle the Profile and Scene Collection as separate items. A Profile carries stream and output configuration; a Scene Collection carries scenes and their sources. Export or switch both when both parts of the setup need to travel together.

- In OBS, open Profile and choose Import/Export.
- Export the current profile settings. OBS creates a JSON file.
- Store that file somewhere you can find it for backup or transfer. A USB flash drive is one optional choice; it is not required.
- On the other OBS installation, open Profile > Import/Export and import the JSON file. Export the Scene Collection separately if you need the scenes and sources too.
Treat exported files and screenshots carefully if they include stream credentials. YouTube describes a stream key as functioning like a password and address. If a key is exposed, an authorized channel owner or manager can reset it in YouTube Live Control Room and then update the encoder. See YouTube’s live stream settings instructions.

OBS Profiles versus YouTube’s Reuse settings
YouTube’s Reuse settings action copies the previous stream’s metadata, settings, and stream key into a new stream. That is a YouTube-side shortcut for creating a stream. An OBS Profile instead saves and switches OBS-side configuration, such as its output and video settings. One does not replace the other; use whichever applies to the part of your workflow you want to reuse.
Test a profile before going live
After switching or importing a profile, verify that it points to the intended destination and that its output values remain suitable. OBS recommends testing to identify configuration or performance problems before streaming. YouTube recommends testing upload speed, checking stream health, and testing audio and motion similar to the intended broadcast.

- Check the selected Profile and, if relevant, the matching Scene Collection.
- Confirm the account, destination, and current stream key; do not assume an imported credential is still valid.
- Review resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and encoder settings against current platform guidance.
- Run a test with representative audio and motion, then watch for dropped frames, encoding strain, or stream-health warnings before relying on the setup live.
Troubleshooting saved stream settings
The scenes or sources are missing after importing a Profile
Profiles do not contain scenes. Import or select the relevant Scene Collection separately.
The stream goes to the wrong destination
Check the active Profile’s Stream settings and confirm the account, server or destination, and key. OBS profiles can preserve connected-account settings, so do not infer the destination from the profile name alone.

The imported profile does not connect
The stream key may have changed, been reset, or been copied incorrectly. Verify it in the platform’s live control area, update the encoder, and keep the key private. YouTube advises an authorized owner or manager to reset a compromised key.
The saved settings cause poor stream quality or performance warnings
A saved bitrate or frame rate may no longer suit the connection, platform guidance, or available computer resources. Recheck current recommendations, measure upload speed, and test a lower-demand configuration if the system struggles; 60 fps can be more taxing than 30 fps.
A profile change appears not to have carried over
Confirm that the intended profile is active and that the setting belongs to one of the profile-managed Stream, Video, or Output areas. If the missing item is a scene or source arrangement, look in Scene Collections instead.
