To use Streamlabs Game Overlay on one monitor, enable it in Streamlabs Desktop, choose chat and/or recent events, position the panels, and assign hotkeys. Run your game in borderless-windowed or windowed-fullscreen mode: Streamlabs says the overlay does not work in fullscreen mode.
Set up the overlay in Streamlabs Desktop
- Open the overlay settings: In Streamlabs Desktop, go to Settings > Game Overlay.
- Enable the in-game overlay: Select whether to show chat, recent events, or both. Chat helps you follow viewer messages; recent events show stream activity. Choose only the panels you need so they take up less of the game view.
- Position and adjust the panels: Use Toggle Positioning Mode to move the overlay components. Adjust opacity so the panels remain readable without obscuring too much gameplay.
- Set hotkeys: Open Settings > Hotkeys and assign controls for toggling the overlay and entering or leaving positioning mode. Set these before launching a game so you can show or hide the panels without switching away from play.
- Change the game’s display mode: Set the game to Borderless Windowed or Windowed Fullscreen. Streamlabs’ support guide says Game Overlay will not work in fullscreen mode.
Choose what to show while playing
Chat, recent events, or both can appear over the game. If you mainly need to respond to viewers, show chat; if you want to keep track of stream activity, show recent events. Showing both provides more information but covers more of the game display. Move the panels to less important parts of the screen and use opacity to balance legibility against visibility of gameplay.

If the overlay does not appear
- Check the game display mode: Fullscreen is not supported for this overlay. Switch to borderless-windowed or windowed-fullscreen.
- Check that the overlay is enabled: Return to Settings > Game Overlay and confirm the in-game overlay and the components you want are selected.
- Check your hotkeys: Confirm that you assigned toggle and positioning-mode controls in Settings > Hotkeys, then use the toggle to show the overlay.
Streamlabs’ published guidance does not establish compatibility for every game, operating system, graphics API, or potential software conflict. If the display mode and settings are correct but the overlay still fails, consult Streamlabs support for your particular setup rather than assuming every game is supported.
