iFaith is a historical Windows utility for a narrow range of older Apple hardware—not a general iPhone downgrade tool. It can dump signing data already available on supported devices and stitch that data into a matching IPSW. A successful restore still depends on the exact model, firmware build, blob, DFU method, and compatible restore software.
This guide covers the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPad 1, iPod touch 3G/4G and Apple TV 2 era. Newer devices generally need Legacy iOS Kit, FutureRestore or a device-specific method instead.

What an SHSH blob is—and is not
An SHSH blob (often called APTicket data) is Apple’s device- and firmware-specific authorization. It is not iOS itself.

A blob normally must match the device’s ECID, board/model variant and exact target build. Another person’s blob is not interchangeable. On newer hardware, nonce/APNonce, SEP, baseband and sometimes Cryptex compatibility also matter; a file that exists is not proof that restoration will work. Check compatibility before touching the device
Identify the exact model (including GSM/CDMA variant), current iOS version, target build, 32-bit or 64-bit architecture, and where the blob came from. The historical iFaith guide documented these ranges, but they are not guarantees for every hardware revision or release.

The original compatibility overview is archived at iDownloadBlog’s iFaith reference. iPhone 4S and later devices should not be assumed compatible with the original workflow.
What you need
- A supported legacy device and a reliable direct USB connection.
- A Windows computer; an isolated legacy Windows installation or virtual machine is safer for unsigned old software.
- iFaith from a reputable archival source. A current developer-controlled download could not be verified, so scan the archive, retain it unchanged and verify a hash when one is available.
- The exact target IPSW, with enough disk space for the original and generated files.
- A complete backup of user data and working Apple ID/activation credentials.
- A compatible older iTunes installation or another legacy restore utility. The newest iTunes is not automatically suitable.
- Administrator privileges and a recovery plan if the device enters a loop.
Save onboard SHSH blobs with iFaith
Interface wording varies by release. The following labels match the commonly documented iOS 5-era build.
- Back up the device and verify that the backup can be restored.
- Connect the device directly to the Windows computer, not through a hub.
- Run iFaith as administrator.
- Choose Dump SHSH Blobs, then select Proceed (or the equivalent continuation button).
- Follow the on-screen instructions to place the device in DFU mode. If asked about Apple TV support, choose the appropriate type.
- Start the dump and wait without disconnecting the cable.
- Save the resulting blob in a clearly named folder containing the device, build and date.
- Make at least two additional copies on separate storage. Do not edit the file or change its extension.
Dumping preserves signing data and does not itself downgrade or erase the device. The historical step sequence is documented in this iFaith procedure.

Retrieve an older cached blob
iFaith may offer a cache-server retrieval option. Treat three sources separately:
- Onboard: data currently extractable from the device.
- Local: files you previously saved or backed up.
- Third-party cache: a copy someone uploaded previously; availability is not guaranteed.
Local copies are authoritative. If no matching local, onboard or cache copy exists, iFaith cannot manufacture a blob for a firmware the device never possessed while authorization was available.
Build a custom signed IPSW
- Launch iFaith and choose Build signed IPSW w/ Blobs.
- Select the blob that matches the device and target build.
- Select the untouched IPSW for the exact model and version.
- Allow iFaith to extract and process the IPSW.
- Wait for stitching to finish; do not rename or modify the generated file.
- Record the blob filename, original IPSW and output IPSW together so you can audit the restore later.
Finding an IPSW online does not make it valid: verify its model and build against the blob.

A restore normally erases user data. Confirm your backup and activation credentials before proceeding.

- Use iFaith’s supported DFU or Pwned DFU procedure for the device.
- Open a restore application known to handle that legacy custom-IPSW workflow.
- Choose the stitched IPSW, not the untouched Apple IPSW.
- Start the restore and leave the cable connected until the process completes.
- Record any exact error number before changing tools or files.
Historical guides used iFaith’s Pwned DFU function with compatible iTunes releases; current iTunes versions may reject these files. A successful restore is not guaranteed merely because stitching completed. The legacy flow is also described by Redmond Pie’s archived guide.
Troubleshooting by symptom
Device is not detected
- Try another cable, USB port and computer; avoid hubs.
- Re-enter DFU mode and reinstall or change Apple mobile-device drivers.
- Run iFaith with administrator rights.
No blobs found
The target may never have been authorized for that device, the device may expose no usable onboard data, the dump may have failed, or a local backup may be stored under another name. Modern tools can require a jailbreak, OpenSSH or a ramdisk; see Legacy iOS Kit’s blob-saving notes.
Invalid blob or validation failure
Check the ECID, model, build and file integrity. A corrupted file, wrong format or unreproducible nonce/signing condition can invalidate an otherwise genuine blob.
iTunes rejects the IPSW
- Confirm the exact model-specific IPSW.
- Confirm the blob represents that build.
- Confirm DFU/Pwned DFU status.
- Use a restore application and iTunes version compatible with the historical workflow.
- Stabilize the USB connection and preserve the error log.
Recovery loop or failed boot
Possible causes include incompatible stitched firmware, an incorrect DFU sequence, baseband or boot-chain mismatch, or a target requiring a different exploit. Do not repeatedly erase and restore at random; return to the model, build and signing checks first.

When to use a modern alternative

FutureRestore commands such as futurerestore -t ticket.shsh --latest-baseband firmware.ipsw are not iFaith commands and are not universally safe. Follow the project’s device-specific instructions and treat signing-status sites such as IPSW Guide only as a preliminary check.
Final preflight checklist
- Exact hardware model and board variant identified.
- Target IPSW matches that model and build.
- Blob matches the device identity and target.
- At least three copies of the blob and a verified data backup exist.
- DFU/Pwned DFU instructions for this device are understood.
- Compatible restore software and Windows environment are available.
- Activation credentials and a recovery plan are ready.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I save a blob for iOS I never installed?
Usually no. iFaith can dump data that is onboard or already cached; it cannot create authorization for a build the device never possessed while Apple authorized it.
Can I use someone else’s SHSH blob?
No. Blobs are tied to a device identity and target build, so another device’s file is not interchangeable.

Do not assume it can. The original iFaith workflow was aimed at older devices, and iPhone 4S and later models generally require a different method.

Will downgrading preserve my data?
Treat the operation as destructive. Make and verify a complete backup before restoring.
Can I use an SHSH2 file with iFaith?
Not automatically. SHSH2 files belong to newer signing workflows and may require FutureRestore or another compatible tool rather than iFaith’s stitched-IPSW format.
What if Apple no longer signs the firmware?
A matching legacy blob may permit a supported custom restore, but only when the device, build, restore tool and signing conditions are compatible.
