On a normal, unmodified PS4, there is no official general-purpose network method for copying files directly to a Windows PC or Mac. The correct alternative depends on what “files” means: screenshots and videos have limited sharing workarounds, saves can be synchronized to another PlayStation with PlayStation Plus, and installed games or arbitrary files cannot be exported through the stock system. FTP is possible only on a compatible modified/homebrew PS4.
First identify what you want to move
PS4 storage is divided into categories that Sony handles differently. Choose the closest match before selecting a method.
| What you want to transfer | USB-free result on a stock PS4 |
|---|---|
| Screenshots and gameplay clips | No reliable official bulk PS4-to-PC export. Sony documents copying them to USB from Capture Gallery. |
| Saved games | PlayStation Plus can move saves between PlayStation consoles, but it is not a normal PC file-download service. |
| Installed PS4 games | No supported PS4-to-PC copy route. A PC edition is a separate installation and usually uses a different save system. |
| Other files, downloads or media | The retail PS4 is not a general network file server. |
| Files on an already modified PS4 | FTP may work over your local network, depending on the firmware and homebrew environment. |
Screenshots and videos: what works without USB?
Sony’s supported method is still USB
On the PS4, open Capture Gallery, highlight a screenshot or video, press OPTIONS, and choose the copy-to-USB option. Connect that storage to the computer afterward. This is Sony’s documented export workflow: PS4 Capture Gallery instructions.
Sony also documents editing and sharing captures from the console, but does not provide a general network folder, web browser download page, or PS4-to-PC transfer feature: PS4 editing and sharing instructions.

Practical workarounds for a few captures
- Share one item through an available service: use the PS4’s built-in sharing option, then download the result on a computer if that service and your region still support the workflow. Services can change, and some may resize or recompress the media.
- Use a phone or tablet as an intermediary: this is still a share-and-download process, not direct access to the PS4 drive.
- Use a capture card for future recordings: it records the PS4’s HDMI output directly on the computer. It does not retrieve files already in Capture Gallery and it re-records the output rather than preserving the original file.
Do not assume the PlayStation App syncs PS4 captures
Sony’s current PlayStation App documentation describes automatic capture uploads and downloads for PS5 captures. It does not describe an equivalent automatic retrieval feature for existing PS4 Capture Gallery files: PlayStation App. Treat any PS4 sharing route as item-by-item and dependent on current software and account-region support.
Game saves: PlayStation Plus helps consoles, not ordinary PC downloads

Why the save is usually not usable on a PC
PlayStation Plus cloud storage is designed primarily for moving saves between PlayStation consoles. Sony’s documented PC workflow concerns saves for games streamed through PlayStation Plus, not exposing ordinary PS4 console saves as downloadable Windows or macOS files: PlayStation Plus streamed-game save transfer.
A PC version also needs the game publisher to support cross-save or cross-progression. Sony currently says that transferring save data between PS4/PS5 versions and PlayStation Studios PC versions is not generally possible; individual games can provide their own systems: PlayStation PC-games support.

Installed games and general files
You cannot normally copy an installed PS4 game to a PC and use it as a PC installation. The PC release is a separate product, and discussing package extraction or redistribution would also raise copyright and account-security issues.
The stock PS4 similarly does not expose its internal drive as a Windows or macOS network share. If your computer cannot see the console under Network, that is expected behavior rather than a missing Windows setting.

FTP: possible only on a modified PS4
A jailbroken or homebrew-enabled PS4 can run an FTP server that exposes selected storage areas. Community reports describe connecting from a PC FTP client, sometimes on port 2121, but the port, directories, permissions and available files vary by payload, firmware and homebrew setup. This is not a retail-PS4 feature. Examples of community reports include PS4 homebrew save transfer and local FTP transfer troubleshooting.
High-level FTP workflow
- Confirm that the PS4 is already running a compatible, unofficial homebrew/FTP environment.
- Connect the PS4 and computer to the same trusted router, preferably by Ethernet for large transfers.
- Start the PS4’s FTP server and note the IP address and port it displays. Do not assume port 2121 or any universal folder path.
- Install an FTP client such as FileZilla Client on the computer.
- Enter the displayed address, port and any credentials required by that server.
- Download files to the computer first. Verify that they open correctly before deleting or changing anything on the PS4.
- Stop the FTP server when finished.
Risks and boundaries
- Do not modify a console solely to recover a few screenshots.
- Firmware exploits and homebrew compatibility change; modification can affect PSN access, stability, warranty and normal game or service use.
- Use FTP only on a trusted local network and disable it afterward.
- Do not use it to download or distribute copyrighted games or unauthorized game packages.
- Protected or encrypted areas may remain inaccessible even when FTP connects.
Why Remote Play and Media Player do not transfer files
Remote Play is streaming and control
Remote Play lets a compatible PC or Mac display and control the PS4 over a high-speed network. It does not mount the PS4 drive, provide a file browser or export stored files: Sony PS4 support and Remote Play information.
Media Player works in the opposite direction
PS4 Media Player can play content from a USB device or a network media server. In the network case, the PS4 discovers media hosted on the computer; it does not make PS4 storage available for reverse copying: PS4 Media Player.
Troubleshooting the alternatives
FTP connects but the files you need are missing
- The server may expose only selected directories.
- Your homebrew session may lack the required permissions or may have expired.
- The IP address or port may be wrong, or the devices may be on isolated guest Wi-Fi networks.
- The desired data may be protected or encrypted.
Download a copy and verify it on the computer before making any change on the console.
The transfer stops partway through
- Prefer Ethernet over Wi-Fi for large batches.
- Keep the PS4 awake and prevent rest mode during the session.
- Restart the FTP server if the connection becomes stale.
- Use an FTP client with resume support and copy smaller groups of files.
- Check free disk space on the computer and confirm that both devices remain on the same local network.
Media Player or Network shows the wrong device
That usually means the direction is reversed: the PS4 is looking for a media server on the computer. It is not evidence that the PS4 has become a shareable network drive.
Quick Recap
Best choice by situation
| Your situation | Most practical choice |
|---|---|
| One or two existing screenshots | Use a currently available PS4 sharing option and download from the service, accepting possible resizing or regional limitations. |
| A large archive of existing captures | Use Sony’s USB export, or FTP only if the PS4 is already modified and you accept the risks. |
| Backing up a PS4 save | PlayStation Plus cloud storage for restoration on another PlayStation; it is not a general PC export. |
| Moving a save into a PC edition | Check that specific game’s publisher-supported cross-save or cross-progression feature. |
| Copying installed games or arbitrary files | No supported stock-PS4 method exists. |
| Recording future gameplay directly to a computer | Use a capture card; this records new HDMI output rather than transferring old files. |
| Already running compatible homebrew | Use its FTP server with the IP, port and paths shown by that environment. |
