If you played The Witch’s Bakery demo on Steam, do not use its visible Continue save after installing the released game. Sunny Lab’s official Steam announcement (October 14, 2026) says the demo and release saves are incompatible and that continuing the old save can eventually leave the game stuck. Select Default Public Version in Steam and start a new game instead. That creates a compatible full-game save, but it does not restore demo progress or recipes.
On Nintendo Switch, Nintendo lists Save Data Cloud support, which requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Enable and verify that backup in the console’s save-data settings. Nintendo also marks the game’s Switch 2 compatibility as “Unsupported – Problems with game progression have been found” (updated March 31, 2026), so check the hardware and software version before treating missing recipes as ordinary save corruption.

The safe answer, by platform
The correct recovery action depends on where the save came from. A demo save carried into the Steam release is a documented compatibility problem; an overwritten or corrupted full-game save has no documented general restore procedure in the available official information.

What “saving” means in The Witch’s Bakery
There is an important difference between a save that the game can load and a save that belongs to a compatible version. The Steam demo can leave a visible Continue entry, but that entry is not evidence that the released game can safely read it. Sunny Lab specifically warns that demo and release saves are incompatible.

The official material available for this release does not publish a complete list of in-game save triggers, a manual-save key, or a recipe-by-recipe save schedule. Do not assume that seeing a Continue button proves that every part of a previous session—recipes, unlocks, inventory, or story progression—has been transferred correctly. Treat the game’s own save confirmation and the platform’s save-data status as separate checks.
Use the version before diagnosing the save
- The Witch’s Bakery released on October 14, 2026. Steam identifies Sunny Lab as developer and Silver Lining Interactive as publisher.
- Nintendo’s Switch listing also gives October 14, 2026 as the release date and lists Save Data Cloud support.
- A demo-to-release transition is not the same problem as an overwritten full-game save. Apply the demo fix only when the save originated in the demo.
Steam: move from the demo to a compatible release save
This is the one save-loss scenario for which the developer gives a precise remedy. Sunny Lab’s October 14 announcement says: “you must start a new game, since saves are incompatible and the game will get stuck at some point if you continue with your old save.” The instruction is deliberately stronger than “try loading again”: continuing the old entry can produce a later lock-up even if the game initially opens.
Step 1: identify the affected save
- Think back to where the progress was created. If you played the Steam demo and then installed the October 14 release, classify the Continue entry as a demo-origin save.
- Do not use the Continue entry to test whether it is safe. The warning applies even when the entry is visible and appears selectable.
- If the progress was created only in the released game, do not delete it merely because another player experienced the demo mismatch. The official warning is specific to demo-to-release saves.
Step 2: select the Default Public Version in Steam
- Open your Steam library and select The Witch’s Bakery.
- Open the game’s properties and locate the branch or beta-version control.
- Set the selection to Default Public Version, the branch named in Sunny Lab’s announcement.
- Allow Steam to finish any update or file synchronization before launching the game.
Steam’s labels can change slightly between the desktop client and later client updates. The important part is that the game is on the release’s Default Public Version rather than a demo branch or another test branch.

Step 3: start a new game
- Launch the game after Steam finishes applying the selected version.
- Choose the option to start a new game. Do not select Continue on the old demo entry.
- Play until the game has created its first compatible release save, then exit normally.
- Start the game again and confirm that the new release save appears as the current Continue option.
Starting over is not a conversion process. The released game does not import the demo’s recipes or progression through this procedure. The benefit is compatibility: the new save belongs to the version you are now running.

If the old Continue entry remains visible
A lingering entry does not mean that it has become compatible. Leave it unused. If the game offers a save-management command, use only the game’s own documented deletion option and make certain you are not deleting the newly created release save. If no such command is available, do not experiment with random files or third-party editors; preserve the data and contact Sunny Lab support.
Steam troubleshooting when Continue freezes
A freeze after selecting Continue can be consistent with the documented demo/release mismatch, but a freeze alone does not prove that this is the cause. Use the following branch instead of repeatedly loading the same entry.
The save came from the demo
- Close the game rather than repeatedly forcing the frozen load to continue.
- Set Steam to Default Public Version.
- Launch the release and start a new game.
- Confirm that the new game can be closed and reopened before investing more time in it.
The save was created in the full release
The demo announcement does not establish a general fix for a full-release save that freezes. Do not relabel every failure as demo incompatibility. Record the platform, whether the save was created in the demo or release, the date the problem began, and what happened immediately before the freeze. Send those details through Sunny Lab’s official support channels.
You are unsure which version created the save
Use the most conservative path: do not overwrite or delete the existing data, check Steam’s selected branch, and tell support that the save origin is uncertain. Starting a new game may establish a working release save, but it should not be described as recovery of an unknown or corrupted file.

Nintendo Switch: protect progress with Save Data Cloud
Nintendo’s listing for the Switch edition includes Save Data Cloud. Nintendo states that a Nintendo Switch Online membership is required for that backup feature. Cloud backup is protection for a compatible Switch save; it is not a method for converting an incompatible Steam demo save.
Enable and verify the backup
- On the Switch, open System Settings.
- Open the console’s Data Management and Save Data controls, then choose the Save Data Cloud option.
- Select the user profile that owns your Witch’s Bakery progress.
- Choose The Witch’s Bakery and follow the on-screen command to back up the save.
- Return to the same screen and check the displayed backup status or timestamp. A command that was pressed is not enough; verify that the console reports a completed backup.
Exact labels can vary with the console’s system-language setting and Nintendo’s menu revisions. If the game does not appear in the cloud list, confirm that the correct user profile is selected, that the membership is active, and that the title is being run on the Switch account that created the save.
Restoring from a Switch cloud copy
Use a cloud restore only when you have confirmed that the cloud copy is the version you want. Restoring replaces the console’s current local save with the selected backup, so a newer local session can be lost. Before confirming, compare the displayed backup date with the last session in which your recipes were present. If the cloud copy is older or its date is unclear, stop and contact support rather than guessing.
Switch 2 warning
Nintendo’s listing labels Switch 2 compatibility “Unsupported – Problems with game progression have been found”. The listing shows an update date of March 31, 2026. This warning changes the diagnosis: progression trouble on Switch 2 may be a platform-compatibility issue rather than evidence that the underlying save was overwritten. If you can, check the same account and save on supported Switch hardware, keep the Switch 2 data intact, and include the console model and system version in a support request.

Why recipes can appear to disappear
A missing recipe is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Sort the report into one of these cases before taking an irreversible action.
Demo progress is being opened in the release
This is the documented Steam case. The old entry may be visible and may load partially, but Sunny Lab says the formats are incompatible. Starting a new release game is the official remedy; the demo’s recipes are not restored.
The wrong user or platform profile is active
On Switch, save data is associated with the console user profile. Check that the profile used to create the progress is the one currently running the game before restoring cloud data. On Steam, verify that you are launching the same installation and branch where the release save was created.
A cloud copy is older than the local copy
A cloud backup can protect an earlier state while omitting recipes learned later. Compare timestamps before restoring. Do not assume that “cloud available” means “cloud contains the newest progress.”

Switch 2 compatibility is involved
Nintendo’s explicit progression warning means that missing unlocks on Switch 2 require platform information in the diagnosis. Record whether the same save behaves differently on a supported Switch model.
A full-game save is genuinely damaged or overwritten
No official general-purpose restore workflow is documented for this situation. The absence of a published tool means you should not promise that a recipe can be reconstructed from a local file, nor present third-party save editors as an official fix.
What to do when a full-game save is overwritten or corrupted
Use a preservation-first approach. Every new launch, reinstall, or restore attempt can change which copy remains available.

- Contact Sunny Lab through its official support channels and follow its instructions. Explain whether the save began in the demo or the full release; that distinction determines whether the documented compatibility fix applies.
Do not claim that a PC-cleanup utility, a third-party save editor, or a file copied from another player will recover this game’s progress. No such method is established as an official solution in the available release information.
A practical save-safety routine
For Steam players
- After installing the release, confirm Steam shows Default Public Version.
- Keep demo-origin progress conceptually separate from release-origin progress; do not use the demo Continue entry as a test.
- After creating a new release game, close and reopen it once to verify that the compatible save is present.
- When reporting a problem, state whether the save was created in the demo, the release, or both.
For Switch players
- Use the same Nintendo user profile that created the progress.
- Maintain an active Nintendo Switch Online membership if you rely on Save Data Cloud.
- Check the cloud-backup timestamp after an important session rather than assuming synchronization completed.
- Before restoring, compare cloud and local dates so that an older backup does not replace newer recipes.

What can and cannot be recovered
The Steam demo-to-release procedure recovers access to a compatible game by replacing the incompatible starting point with a new release save. It does not recover the demo’s recipes, unlocks, or hours played. Nintendo’s cloud feature can restore a compatible Switch save when a suitable backup exists, subject to the account, membership, and backup timestamp. For an overwritten or corrupted full-game save without a usable backup, the available official information does not establish a general restore tool or guaranteed recipe-recovery method.
