To share a voicemail, open it in the iPhone Phone app, tap Share, then choose an available destination. To keep messages available across supported Apple devices, turn on Phone & FaceTime in iCloud settings. These are different actions: sharing sends a copy through an available app or service, while iCloud syncing keeps voicemail available on supported devices; Apple does not document a universal export format or a guaranteed Save to Files option.
Share a voicemail from the Phone app
Apple’s iPhone voicemail instructions show a Share action for a voicemail. The route to the message depends on which Phone app layout your iPhone displays.

- In the Unified layout: Open Phone, tap Calls, then open Recents. Tap the Filter button and choose Voicemails.
- In the Classic layout: Open Phone and tap Voicemail.
- Open the voicemail you want to send and tap Share.
- Choose a destination from the share sheet and follow its prompts.
The destination choices depend on the iPhone and the apps installed on it. Apple’s instructions do not promise a particular app, filename, or audio file format for every device.
What “save” means on iPhone
Keep the message in your voicemail mailbox
A message that has not been deleted can still be erased by your carrier if it is not stored in iCloud. Apple says voicemail messages are saved until you delete them or the carrier erases them when they are not stored in iCloud. For that reason, leaving a message in the mailbox is not the same as making an independent backup.

Sync voicemail with iCloud
Apple documents syncing Carrier Voicemail and Live Voicemail through iCloud on supported setups. To enable it, go to Settings > your name > iCloud > See All next to Saved to iCloud, then turn on Phone & FaceTime. This keeps voicemail synced through iCloud; it is not a guarantee of a separate archive file.
Create a separate copy
Use the voicemail’s Share action and select an available destination if you want to send or store a copy outside the mailbox. The share sheet’s options vary, and Apple does not specify one universal “Save to Files” workflow or export format.

Voicemail, Visual Voicemail, and Live Voicemail are available only with select carriers and in select countries or regions, as Apple notes in its voicemail setup guide. If Visual Voicemail is unavailable, Apple recommends using the carrier’s voicemail interface:

- Tap Voicemail in Phone and follow the prompts, if that option is shown.
- Alternatively, call your iPhone’s mobile number from another phone. At the carrier’s prompt, press * or # as required, then enter your voicemail password.
Which key to press depends on the carrier’s instructions; Apple does not give one key that works for all carriers.
Recover a deleted voicemail
If the Phone app offers a Deleted Messages area, open it, select the message, and tap Undelete. Recovery is not assured: Apple warns that carriers in some regions may permanently erase deleted messages, and changing the SIM card may also delete messages. Live Voicemail transcription is not an audio backup
Live Voicemail can display a real-time transcription while someone is leaving a message. Apple says its availability varies by region and language. The transcript should not be treated as an exported audio copy: Apple’s guide to checking and sharing voicemail does not describe transcription as an audio backup.
