Choose the right way to preserve a post

Save a TikTok video or photo
For another person’s post, open it, tap Share, then choose Save video or Save photo if the option appears. TikTok says downloads depend on the creator allowing them; if the control is missing, you cannot use that in-app download route. For your own post, TikTok recommends turning on Save to device from More options on the Post screen. TikTok also describes a Save control while editing. Save Snapchat Stories—and know when the poster is notified
If you created the Story, Snapchat says to tap your Profile icon and the download icon beside the Story to save the whole Story. To save one Snap, expand the Story, open that Snap, and tap the download icon. If you contributed to someone else’s Story, Snapchat says you can save only the Snaps you added. It also says the person who posted a Snap is notified when it is saved. Request your own X or Reddit archive
X archive
In X, go to Settings and privacy, then the account/data section and its archive download control to request your archive. X says the download is machine-readable HTML and JSON and can include profile information, posts, Direct Messages, Moments, and attached images, videos, and GIFs. Preparation may take a few days, and X sends a notification when it is ready. The archive is for your own account history, not a way to instantly save another person’s post. If you plan to leave X, request and download your archive before relying on deactivation. X says an account can be restored for up to 30 days by logging back in; after that it is permanently deactivated and associated information is no longer available in X’s production tools. Reddit data request
A signed-in Reddit user can request a copy of their data through Reddit’s data request form. Reddit says preparation may take up to 30 days. Some information—including posts, comments, votes, recent IP addresses, account preferences, and authorized apps—can also be accessed through the account without waiting for the export. That makes the account’s existing controls useful for browsing your own information, but the export is not an emergency capture of a post that may soon disappear. Reddit says deleted data is promptly made unavailable on the platform and subsequently deleted unless a legal reason or legitimate business need supports longer retention. It also says third parties using public Reddit content through its developer services must stop displaying or using it after deletion. Instagram and Facebook: check current in-app controls
Use a save or export option offered in the current app if one is available. If a visible item may vanish before you can confirm those controls, capture it promptly. App menus and availability can change, so follow the labels currently shown in your account rather than relying on an unverified menu path.

A practical preservation workflow
- Open the post and record its URL, the account name, and the date and time you captured it.
- Use the platform’s download or save control if it is available and appropriate. Observe creator permissions and any notice the platform displays about notifications.
- If no download is offered and the item is visible, take a screenshot. Use screen recording only if motion or playback is important.
- Put the file in a clearly labeled folder. If it is important, keep a second copy—for example, on another drive.
- For your own account history, request an archive early. Do not wait for it when preserving a single urgent post.
- Keep sensitive captures private, retain relevant context, and do not present a screenshot as proof of authenticity by itself.

Can I screenshot a Story without the person knowing?
Do not assume it will be invisible. Snapchat explicitly says the poster is notified when a Snap is saved; notification behavior varies by platform and feature.
Can a screenshot recover a post after it has been deleted?
No. It records what is visible when you capture it; it cannot retrieve an item that was never captured and is no longer available.
