To capture an API response screenshot, reproduce the request, find it in Chrome DevTools’ Network panel, open its Response tab, and capture only the readable evidence you need. If the report also depends on the HTTP status or headers, include those separately: DevTools shows them in the request’s Headers tab, and a screenshot of the response body alone does not establish that context.
For a one-off diagnosis, DevTools is direct. For repeatable captures, Playwright can take screenshots of a viewport, full page, or selected element. In either case, use safe data and inspect the exported image before sharing it.

What an API response screenshot can—and cannot—show
A screenshot records visible browser content. It can make a response easy to read in documentation or a bug report, but it is not the same as the original response data and may not show how the request was made or what status it returned.
- Use the response view when the relevant evidence is the response body.
- Include the request’s status and relevant headers when those affect the issue. They are in a separate DevTools view.
- If exact machine-readable data matters, attach a sanitized response sample or structured log as well, if your team’s policy permits it.

Capture a response manually in Chrome DevTools
- Reproduce the request. Use the application or test environment that generated the issue. For public documentation, prefer a safe fixture or test account rather than real customer data.
- Open DevTools and select Network. Re-run the action that sends the API request if needed, then identify the relevant request in the request list.
- Inspect the response body. Select the request and open Response. Confirm the displayed content is the response you intend to document.
- Check context when it matters. Open Headers to inspect status and request or response headers. If the screenshot must establish both body and context, capture separate views or use a report format that presents both clearly.
- Frame and capture. Make the response text large enough to read and keep unrelated page content out of the frame. Capture the visible browser state using your normal screenshot method.
- Review before sharing. Open the saved image at full size and check for credentials, tokens, personal values, or unrelated sensitive data.
DevTools is useful for a one-off investigation because you can inspect the request and its response directly. Its body and header information appear in separate views, so a single body-only image may leave out diagnostic details.
Automate a repeatable screenshot with Playwright
Playwright supports screenshots of the viewport, the full page, and individual elements; its screenshot API also supports returning image data as a buffer for post-processing. Choose the narrowest capture scope that preserves the evidence. For a reproducible screenshot, render the response in a controlled test page or application view, then capture that view.
The example below assumes your test page displays the response in an element with the selector [data-testid="api-response"]. Replace the URL and selector with those used by your application. Install Playwright and its browser as described in the Playwright screenshot documentation.

For a viewport screenshot, use await page.screenshot({ path: 'api-response.png' }); for a full-page screenshot, use await page.screenshot({ path: 'api-response.png', fullPage: true }). These alternatives change the captured area, not what the screenshot proves: ensure the status or request context is visible if the report requires it.
Masking and output formats
Playwright’s screenshot API can mask selected page elements, which may help obscure known sensitive fields in a rendered page. Masking is not a comprehensive privacy guarantee: avoid using secrets in the first place and inspect the final exported image. For example, an element screenshot can mask a known field:

Choose the capture route for the report

Neither route is universally best. Use DevTools when you need to inspect a live request manually; use automation when the capture should be rerun consistently or constrained to a known page region.
Keep the evidence safe and comparable
- Start with safe inputs. A test account or representative fixture is safer than trying to conceal production secrets after capture.
- Check the full-size export. Verify both legibility and whether the image exposes credentials, personal values, or identifying information. Masking selected elements does not guarantee that every sensitive value is removed.
- Preserve context deliberately. Include the status or relevant headers when they are part of the claim. A screenshot of the body alone should not be presented as proof of status or request details.
- Stabilize automated captures. For visual comparisons, keep the browser/runtime setup consistent. Playwright notes that operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode can affect rendering. See Playwright visual comparisons.
Troubleshooting capture problems
The response is missing or appears stale
Make sure the request was triggered in the same environment and that you selected the relevant network entry. If the action did not run again, repeat it and inspect the resulting request rather than capturing an unrelated or old response.
The screenshot shows the body but not the status
That is expected when capturing only the Response view. Select the same request and inspect its Headers view for status and header information, then capture or document the needed context separately.

The automated image is blank or cuts off the response
Wait until the response element is visible before capturing it, and verify that the selector identifies the intended content. Choose an element, viewport, or full-page capture according to the evidence required; do not widen the screenshot so much that the relevant text becomes unreadable.
Text shifts between repeated screenshots
Keep the browser/runtime conditions stable, including browser version and headless mode, and avoid comparing images made under different rendering environments. Playwright lists environment differences as potential sources of visual variation.

Do not share the image as-is. Prefer regenerating it with safe test data. If masking is appropriate, mask selected rendered elements and inspect the resulting file at full size; masking should not be treated as a guarantee that all sensitive information has been removed.
