Use the service’s own offline feature. For a trailer hosted on YouTube, sign in to the account that has YouTube Premium where Premium is required or available, open the official trailer, select Download, and watch it later from YouTube’s Downloads area. That download is an in-app playback license tied to your account and supported YouTube environment—not an ordinary MP4 that you can export to a USB drive.
If a publisher supplies a downloadable trailer in an official media or press portal, that file may be a separate lawful option. Read the terms for that exact game, territory, and intended use before saving, editing, reposting, screening, or monetizing it. Generic downloader sites, browser extensions, stream-ripping tools, and screen capture do not grant copyright permission.

What legal offline saving actually gives you
There are two different things people call a download:
- Controlled offline playback: The platform stores encrypted data and a viewing license inside its supported app or browser. You can watch without an active connection, but you cannot treat the result as a general-purpose video file.
- An authorized media file: A rights holder supplies a file and expressly permits you to retain or use it under stated conditions. The permission might cover private viewing only, or it might allow particular forms of sharing.
YouTube’s built-in Download control is the straightforward choice for private offline viewing of a trailer on YouTube. The video remains associated with the signed-in account, the service’s software, and the video’s continuing eligibility. A publisher-provided file can be more portable, but only the accompanying license tells you what you may do with it.

Copyright normally exists automatically when an original video is created. The copyright owner controls copying and distribution. Lawful bases can include the owner’s permission, a valid copyright exception, public-domain status, or a license such as Creative Commons; none guarantees that a platform will never issue a claim, so keep evidence of any permission you rely on.
Choose the method that matches your goal

Decide first whether you need private viewing during travel or a file for editing, publication, a presentation, or long-term archiving. Those are different rights questions. The convenient method for the first goal may not satisfy the second.
How to download a YouTube trailer for offline viewing
1. Confirm that the upload is official
Open the trailer’s watch page and inspect the channel name, verification information where shown, description, and publisher or platform branding. Prefer the game publisher, developer, console maker, or an official event channel. A fan upload may be identical to the official trailer but still be uploaded without the owner’s authorization, and its availability can change without notice.

Sign in to the YouTube account that has Premium in a country where the feature is offered. Premium is usually the route for offline downloads, although availability and requirements vary by country, account, browser, device, and individual video. If several accounts are present on a device, verify the active profile before downloading; the license belongs to that signed-in account.
3. Use the trailer’s Download control
- Open the official trailer’s watch page in the supported YouTube app or browser.
- Look beneath the player for Download and select it. If YouTube offers quality choices, select the setting that balances storage and picture quality for your trip.
- Wait for the download indicator to finish while you still have a connection. A partially completed item may not play offline.
If the Download control is missing, do not substitute a downloader. The video, account, region, browser, or device may not be eligible. Check that you are signed in, that your subscription is active where required, and that the app is current. Some videos simply do not have offline rights.

4. Find the saved trailer
Open the You tab or the Library area and choose Downloads. Start playback from that list rather than from a file manager. YouTube’s own instructions state that a user signed in with a YouTube Premium account on mobile can watch videos previously downloaded.
5. Reconnect when YouTube asks
Offline playback is not permanent ownership. YouTube may require the app or browser to reconnect so it can confirm the account and the video’s continuing availability. Documented offline windows can be as short as 48 hours in some regional cases or as long as 29 days for many Premium downloads. The exact period depends on location and content. If the trailer is removed, blocked in your region, or otherwise loses offline eligibility, synchronization can remove the download.

The Download button authorizes playback inside YouTube’s supported environment. It does not create a normal video file that you can browse, rename, attach to an email, or open in another player. Even if storage on your phone or computer appears to increase, the stored data is managed by the service and protected by its playback rules.
That design affects common travel plans:
- USB drive: You cannot normally copy a YouTube offline item to a USB drive as a playable trailer.
- Disc or media server: Burning, transcoding, or importing the download into another player is outside the built-in offline workflow.
- New device: You generally need to sign in to the same account and use a supported YouTube environment; moving a folder is not an account transfer.
- Permanent archive: The platform can require reconnection or remove a title that is no longer available, so the feature is unsuitable as an independent archival system.
If you need a portable file, look for an official publisher asset whose terms expressly allow that retention. Do not infer permission merely because a trailer is publicly viewable.
What YouTube’s terms mean for third-party downloaders
YouTube’s Terms prohibit users from accessing, reproducing, downloading, distributing, transmitting, broadcasting, displaying, selling, licensing, altering, modifying, or otherwise using parts of the service or its content except where YouTube expressly authorizes it or the user has prior written permission from YouTube and the applicable rights holders. The built-in Download control is an example of an expressly authorized feature within its stated limits.

A third-party website or browser extension may technically produce a file, but the software does not supply the missing copyright license. Stream ripping can therefore violate the service terms even when the intended use is private. Screen recording has the same basic problem: changing the capture method does not change who owns the underlying video or what YouTube authorizes.

YouTube’s API policy is separate and more specific. It bars API clients from downloading, caching, storing copies, or enabling offline playback without prior written approval. An app that uses an official API does not automatically gain permission to offer a save-to-file button.
There can be exceptions under copyright law, such as a valid statutory exception or a license granted by the owner, but whether one applies depends on the facts and jurisdiction. A desire to watch during a flight is not itself a blanket exception. For an ordinary viewer seeking a legal, low-risk option, use YouTube’s own Download control or obtain a file directly from the rights holder.
When an official publisher file is a lawful alternative
Some publishers maintain media rooms, press portals, or campaign pages with downloadable trailers. Use the publisher’s own page, save a copy of the terms shown there, and record the date and territory in which you accessed the asset. Treat every title’s policy as separate; one publisher’s permission does not carry over to another game.
Read the permission for the exact title
Look for statements covering:
- Whether private offline viewing is allowed.
- Whether you may repost the complete trailer or only embed the official stream.
- Whether editing, clipping, subtitles, commentary, or montage use is allowed.
- Whether public screenings, livestreams, commercial use, or monetization require approval.
- Whether the permission is limited by country, platform, campaign period, or a particular version of the game.
- Whether music, actors, esports footage, or other third-party material has separate restrictions.
Examples of why policies differ
Nintendo’s published guidelines address game content generated after official release and promotional materials officially released by Nintendo. They also state that users remain responsible for third-party rights and that Nintendo does not provide legal advice.

A Square Enix guideline cited for HARVESTELLA permits specified sharing but says materials may not be used outside the stated permissions. That policy also prohibits posting movie scenes or cutscenes as standalone content under its rules.
Ubisoft’s Video Policy 2.0 says that simple duplication of official trailers, television advertisements, and non-dynamic in-game footage is not authorized by that policy and may be removed. These examples show why a general assumption such as “official trailer means free to copy” is unsafe. Apply the wording of the policy attached to the specific asset.
Keep evidence of permission
Save the page as a PDF or screenshot, retain the downloaded file’s original name, and note the date, country, and account used. If the permission is delivered by email or a press contact, preserve the complete message and any attachments. This record helps you distinguish an authorized publisher file from a copy obtained through an unrelated site.

Offline viewing on your own device is narrower than making the trailer available to someone else. Before you reuse a trailer, classify the intended activity:

Do not assume that credit, a disclaimer, a short clip, or a noncommercial purpose automatically makes a use lawful. Those facts can matter, but they are not universal permission.
Requirements and failure cases
The Download button is absent
- Confirm the correct account is signed in and has the required Premium access.
- Try the official YouTube app or a supported browser rather than an embedded player.
- Check whether the video is restricted by region, age, rights, or the uploader’s settings.
- Accept that some videos are not eligible; do not bypass the restriction with a ripping tool.
The download will not play on the plane
- Reconnect before leaving and open the Downloads area to verify that the trailer starts.
- Check that the account has not been switched, signed out, or removed from the device.
- Confirm that the offline window has not expired. Regional windows can be 48 hours in some cases and up to 29 days for many Premium downloads.
- Free storage and battery-saving restrictions can also interrupt a download; complete it on a stable connection and test playback before departure.
The trailer disappeared after synchronization
YouTube can remove a download when a video is no longer available or loses offline eligibility. There is no supported way to preserve that item as a standalone file. Search the rights holder’s official channel for a replacement upload, or check whether the publisher now offers an authorized media asset.
You need to watch on a television or another player
Use YouTube’s supported sign-in and playback options on that device if available. Do not copy the protected offline data from one device to another. If cross-device file playback is essential, obtain a publisher-supplied file whose terms permit it.
A practical decision checklist
- Define the use: private viewing, transfer, editing, public screening, or monetization.
- Identify the rights holder and locate the official upload or publisher portal.
- For YouTube private viewing, use the signed-in account’s Download control.
- For a file, read the exact publisher license and confirm that your intended use is listed.
- Record the permission, region, date, and any expiration or attribution requirement.
- Test the authorized playback method before travel or an event.
- If permission is unclear, do not copy or redistribute the trailer; ask the rights holder.
Bottom line for common questions
Can you legally download a game trailer from YouTube? Yes, when you use YouTube’s authorized Download feature under the conditions attached to your account, region, device, and the video. The result stays inside YouTube’s supported offline playback system.
Can you save that download to a USB drive? Not as a normal playable file. You need an expressly authorized file from the publisher or another rights holder for that purpose.
Is a YouTube downloader legal because the trailer is official? No automatic permission follows from the trailer’s official status. The tool does not override YouTube’s Terms or the copyright owner’s rights.
What is the safest route for a flight? Download the official trailer in YouTube while signed in, verify it from the Downloads area, and reconnect whenever YouTube requires an account or availability check.
