Save a website screenshot as a PDF in Apify
- Choose an Actor that supports PDF. Check its Apify Store page for PDF as an output format. For example, fetch_cat/website-screenshot-generator documents a PDF option.
- Enter the page URL. Open the Actor’s input form and provide the website address in the field it specifies. If you are capturing several pages, check whether that Actor accepts multiple URLs and how it expects them to be formatted.
- Select PDF. In the output-format field, choose PDF. In the cited Actor, the setting is named
outputFormat; another Actor may use different field names. Follow the current Store page’s input instructions. - Run the Actor. Start the run from its page and wait for the run to complete.
- Retrieve the file. Open the completed run’s output and follow the Actor’s documented file link or storage instructions. The cited screenshot generator says generated files are saved in the run’s key-value store and metadata in the default dataset. Other Actors may provide a direct download link or expose results differently.
Apify describes Actors as tools for web scraping and automation, with platform storage for files and results in its documentation. The Actor’s own Store page is the authority for its current input schema and where its PDF appears after a run.

Understand how PDF output differs from a full-page image
A PDF may be rendered using the browser’s print layout, which paginates content instead of producing one tall image. The cited website screenshot generator says its PDF output ignores the screenshotType setting because PDF rendering uses page print layout. Do not assume that selecting a full-page image mode will make the PDF one continuous page.
- If the Actor offers PDF-specific options, use them to adjust paper size, orientation, margins, or background rendering where available.
- If you need a page that looks exactly like one tall screenshot, select an image output instead. Convert that image to a PDF separately only if you need a PDF file container.
- Check the finished PDF before relying on it: print pagination can break content differently from a full-page screenshot.
Automate the workflow through the Apify API
For repeated captures, an Actor may support API execution. The tidytools/website-screenshot-pdf-markdown API page says an Apify account and API token are required, and documents submitting Actor input to the Apify run endpoint. It also says the default dataset can be read through the API or previewed in Apify Console after the run completes.

- Open the selected Actor’s API tab and check its current endpoint, input schema, and authentication requirements.
- Submit the documented input, including the target URL and PDF selection if required by that Actor.
- Wait for the run to finish, then retrieve the file or output using the storage route specified by the Actor. A dataset may contain metadata or result records rather than the PDF itself.
Do not copy one Actor’s API endpoint, field names, or retrieval assumptions to another Actor without checking its API tab. For a one-off capture, using the Actor’s visual interface is usually the more direct workflow. Choose an Actor that fits the PDF you need
Before running a capture, compare the specific Actor’s current listing on the points that affect your result:

- PDF support: Is PDF explicitly listed as an output format?
- Layout controls: Are the paper size, orientation, margins, or background settings you need available?
- File retrieval: Does the Actor provide a download link, save files to a run key-value store, or expose another route?
- Automation: Is API invocation documented, and what account, token, and input schema does it require?
- Current terms: Check that Actor’s own page for its current pricing and maintenance details; do not assume they match another Actor’s.
Troubleshoot common problems
- No PDF option appears: The Actor may not support PDF. Choose one whose current Store page expressly lists PDF output rather than assuming all screenshot Actors have the same features.
- The PDF is paginated or looks different from the full-page image: PDF rendering may use print layout. Look for PDF-specific settings, or capture an image and convert it separately if a single tall visual is essential.
- The run completed but no obvious download is shown: Open the run’s output and consult the Actor’s instructions for its file link or storage location. For the cited screenshot generator, inspect the run’s key-value store; its default dataset contains metadata.
- The API request is rejected or produces unexpected output: Verify the account and token requirements, endpoint, and input field names against the selected Actor’s current API tab. The API schema is Actor-specific.
- The PDF’s content is incomplete or laid out poorly: Review the result and adjust available print or PDF options. A print-layout PDF and a screenshot image are different capture outcomes, so choose the format that matches the intended use.
