To monitor website changes with Urlwatch on Windows 11, install Urlwatch with Python’s package manager, define a page in its YAML job list, run it manually, then use Windows Task Scheduler to launch it on a recurring schedule. Urlwatch compares each run with the previous result and reports detected changes. The computer must be available and connected when a scheduled check is due.
Install Urlwatch and verify it runs
- Install a current Python environment suitable for your Windows system. The Urlwatch installation guide documents installing the package with pip and recommends checking that the
urlwatchcommand is on PATH. The precise Python installer screens and PATH behavior are not covered here. - Open a terminal and install or upgrade Urlwatch:
python -m pip install --upgrade urlwatch - Check that the command is available and note its version:
urlwatch --version - Run
urlwatchonce. This initializes or migrates Urlwatch’s local state before you add jobs. If a command or option differs in your installed release, consulturlwatch --helpandurlwatch --features.
Urlwatch is a Python-installed command-line monitor. Its documented installation and command verification are described in the installation guide.

Add a website job
Use urlwatch --edit to edit the job list, normally urls.yaml. Use urlwatch --edit-config for global settings and reporters in urlwatch.yaml. The project’s quick start describes these commands.

Start with a plain URL job
For a page whose relevant text appears in the ordinary HTTP response, add a job like this:
#1 Best Overall
- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
name: Example page
url: https://example.com/
Each page or command is a separate job. Multiple YAML jobs are separated by a line containing ---. Keep the first job simple so you can confirm basic fetching and change detection before adding filters or browser rendering.
Choose the right job type
- URL job: retrieves the web response without rendering a browser. Use it when the content you care about is present in that response.
- Browser job: use the documented
navigatejob when the relevant content appears only after JavaScript runs. Browser jobs require installing browsers through Playwright. - Command job: use a
commandjob when the content to monitor comes from a shell command rather than a web page.
Urlwatch’s job documentation covers job definitions and filters. A regular URL job and a browser job are not interchangeable: use browser rendering only if a normal response does not expose the content you need.
Reduce noisy changes with filters
Filters can extract or transform content so comparisons focus on useful material rather than unrelated page changes. Documented options include CSS and XPath extraction, HTML-to-text conversion, JSON formatting, and text matching. Add filters after confirming what the unfiltered job returns; an overly narrow extraction can hide changes you intended to catch.
Recommended Free Tools
The documented default timeout for a URL job is 60 seconds. You can configure timeout in seconds for jobs that need a different limit. See the filter documentation and job documentation for supported options.

Run and inspect a manual check
Run urlwatch interactively before scheduling it. Inspect the output, confirm the job reaches the intended page, and check that the reported content is the content you actually want to monitor. Urlwatch writes a report to standard output by default.
The interval between checks is determined by how often Urlwatch is run. The project recommends running no more frequently than every 30 minutes; this is a project recommendation, not a guarantee that a particular website permits that request frequency. Follow the site’s terms and avoid unnecessary requests. A slower-changing page may only need a daily check.
Schedule Urlwatch with Windows Task Scheduler
Urlwatch recommends Windows Task Scheduler because cron is not installed by default on Windows. Microsoft describes task scheduling for Windows 11 in its Task Scheduler command documentation. Create a recurring task with a time-based trigger and an action that launches Urlwatch.
- Choose a recurring trigger, such as a daily schedule or a repeat interval suited to the page and its permitted request rate.
- For the action, use the full path to the Python executable and pass
-m urlwatchas its argument. This avoids depending on whether the scheduled task can find theurlwatchlauncher through PATH. Alternatively, use the full path to the launcher if you have confirmed that it works interactively. - Set the task’s start-in directory if needed so Urlwatch uses the intended local configuration and state files.
- Save the task, use Task Scheduler’s run action to test it, then inspect its last-run result and output or configured notifications.
Using Python’s module invocation this way is operational guidance, not a Windows-specific command recipe quoted by the Urlwatch or Microsoft pages. The reviewed documentation does not establish what happens to a scheduled check while the computer is asleep or shut down. Keep the PC available and connected at the scheduled time.

Choose how to receive change reports
By default, reports go to standard output, which is useful for an initial interactive check but may not be convenient for unattended runs. Optional reporters include email/SMTP and services such as Slack, Discord, Telegram, Matrix, and Pushover. Many reporters need additional dependencies, credentials, and service-specific configuration.
- Open the global configuration with
urlwatch --edit-config. - Configure the desired reporter under
reportinurlwatch.yaml, following the installed version’s documentation for required fields and dependencies. - Test the reporter directly with
urlwatch --test-reporter <reporter-name>. - Run Urlwatch manually, then run the scheduled task separately and confirm that the scheduled process produces the expected report.
An interactive reporter test confirms only that the direct test works in that context; it does not by itself verify that a scheduled process has the same configuration, environment, or credentials. For reporter troubleshooting, run with --verbose and inspect the output. See the reporter documentation.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
urlwatch is not recognized
Confirm the installation completed and that the command is on PATH, as the Urlwatch installation guide recommends. You can use the full path to the launcher after confirming it works, or start Urlwatch with the Python executable and -m urlwatch. Use the same approach in Task Scheduler rather than assuming its environment matches your interactive terminal.

The Urlwatch handbook documents a Windows workaround for UTF-8 YAML decoding: enable Python’s UTF-8 mode with PYTHONUTF8=1 for the command session. This applies to Python 3.7 and newer. If you set it as a user or system environment variable, make sure the scheduled process receives it too. The handbook’s explanation is at advanced configuration.

The page is missing content or reports unhelpful changes
First inspect what a plain URL job retrieves. If the desired material is populated only by JavaScript, install browsers through Playwright and test a navigate job. If the response includes the right content but also unrelated material, apply an appropriate extraction or conversion filter and check its output before relying on it.
A notification does not arrive
Run urlwatch --test-reporter <reporter-name> interactively and use --verbose to inspect configuration or delivery errors. Then check the scheduled run separately, especially whether it has the right configuration, environment variables, dependencies, and credentials.
A scheduled check does not run when expected
Use Task Scheduler’s run action to test the task, inspect its last-run result, and verify its trigger and action. Confirm that the computer is available and connected at the scheduled time. A manual success is not proof that the task’s own execution context is configured correctly.
