Use SingleFile CLI to save a webpage as one self-contained HTML file: install the CLI, make sure a supported browser is available, then run single-file <url> <output-file>. For example: single-file https://www.wikipedia.org wikipedia.html. The CLI drives a headless browser, so this is a browser-based capture rather than a simple download of the page’s original HTML.
What you need before running SingleFile CLI
- SingleFile CLI: The official project documents a downloadable executable, npm/npx, a manual archive or Git checkout, and Docker as installation routes. Manual installation requires Deno.
- A supported browser: Chrome or a Chromium-based browser should be installed in its default folder. If it is elsewhere, provide its location with
--browser-executable-path. - A terminal: Run the command from a directory where you can write the output file.
SingleFile CLI uses Deno to inject its capture script through Chrome DevTools Protocol. Firefox can be selected with --browser-engine firefox, using WebDriver BiDi; consult the CLI help for the Firefox limitations and options available in your installed version. The project describes SingleFile as saving a complete web page into a single HTML file, but the result is not a guarantee that every dynamic feature or protected page will reproduce perfectly. See the official SingleFile CLI repository and SingleFile project.

Install the CLI and capture one page
Choose one of the installation approaches documented by the project: download its executable, install the npm package, run it with npx, use the source checkout, or use Docker. For the npm route, the documented package installation command is:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

After installation, use the CLI’s core form:
single-file <url> [output] [options ...]
For example, save Wikipedia to a file named wikipedia.html in the current directory:

Replace the URL with the page you want and the second argument with the destination filename. To print the captured HTML to standard output instead of naming an output file, use:
single-file https://www.wikipedia.org --dump-content
Check single-file --help for the exact options supported by your installed release; the project’s README is rolling documentation and does not state a publication date for its instructions.

Save a page that requires sign-in
For a page behind a login, create a browser profile, sign in interactively in the browser window that opens, then reuse the saved profile for capture.
- Create a profile and open the site’s login page:
single-file --create-browser-profile ./profiles/example https://www.example.com/login. - Complete sign-in in the browser window. Exit the browser to save the profile.
- Capture the authenticated page using that profile:
single-file https://www.example.com/account account.html --browser-profile=./profiles/example.
The CLI documentation says the profile is copied and left unmodified during reuse. Treat access as site- and session-dependent: a login that expires or a page that requires additional verification may still prevent a successful capture.
Capture URL lists or crawl links
Process a list of URLs
Put one URL per line in a text file such as list-urls.txt, then pass it with --urls-file:
Recommended Free Tools
single-file --urls-file=list-urls.txt
This is a list-based capture workflow; it does not mean the CLI automatically archives every page on a site.

Crawl selected internal links
The README demonstrates a crawl of internal links to depth 1 with:
single-file https://www.example.com --crawl-links=true --crawl-inner-links-only=true --crawl-max-depth=1
Use the crawl controls deliberately. The project also documents rewrite rules, external-link crawling, and an archive mode that marks links that were not archived. Consult single-file --help for the options and syntax supported by your version before expanding a crawl.
Choose the browser and output workflow
| Choice | Use it when | Consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Downloadable executable | You want the project’s prebuilt executable route. | Follow the repository’s current platform-specific instructions. |
| npm or npx | You want to install or invoke the CLI through the Node package ecosystem. | The documented package is single-file-cli; check the repository for current invocation details. |
| Manual archive or Git checkout | You want a manual/source setup. | Manual installation requires Deno. |
| Docker | You prefer the containerized route documented by the project. | Use the repository’s instructions for the required image and invocation. |
| Chrome or Chromium | You want the documented default browser path. | The CLI expects the browser in its default folder unless you specify --browser-executable-path. |
| Firefox | You need or prefer Firefox. | Select it with --browser-engine firefox; the project notes limitations in its help. |
| Named HTML output | You need a file for later viewing or storage. | Pass an output filename after the URL. |
| Standard output | You need the captured HTML piped into another command or redirected. | Use --dump-content. |
Troubleshoot failed captures
Browser not found or launch fails
Check that Chrome or a Chromium-based browser is installed where the CLI expects it. If it is installed elsewhere, set --browser-executable-path to the executable location. For Firefox, explicitly choose --browser-engine firefox and review the limitations shown by single-file --help.

The page opens but the saved file is incomplete
SingleFile runs the page in a browser, but sites can depend on dynamic behavior, delayed content, authentication, or protections that do not yield a complete archive. Confirm the page works in the selected browser and profile, then consult the installed CLI’s help for capture options relevant to that page. The project’s description of a faithful copy is its characterization, not a promise for every site.
An authenticated page redirects to login
Recreate or refresh the profile using --create-browser-profile, complete sign-in, exit the browser to save the profile, and pass the profile path with --browser-profile. Check whether the session has expired or the site is requesting extra verification.
A batch or crawl reports errors
The documented exit codes are 0 when all pages are saved, 1 when at least one capture fails while other pages in a batch or crawl are saved, and 255 when an error prevents the process from running. For code 1, inspect which URLs failed rather than assuming the entire batch failed; for 255, resolve the startup or configuration error before retrying.

Licensing note
The CLI repository identifies its license as AGPL and directs commercial-service or product licensing inquiries to the maintainer. That statement is not a legal determination about a particular use; consult the project’s license and seek appropriate advice if your deployment raises licensing questions.

If you need an image or PDF rather than a self-contained HTML archive, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API. Its GET endpoint returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; see the ScreenshotNeo website and API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents using Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Can I use SingleFile CLI without Chrome?
The project documents Firefox as an alternative via --browser-engine firefox, with limitations noted in its help. It also describes Chrome or Chromium as the default browser route.
Is SingleFile CLI licensed under AGPL?
The CLI repository identifies its license as AGPL and refers commercial-service or product licensing inquiries to the maintainer; that alone does not determine how the license applies to a particular use.
