To restart an Owncast server automatically when its process exits, run it as a systemd service with Restart=always and RestartSec=5. But a YouTube stream may involve a separate encoder or relay: restarting Owncast does not automatically restart that publisher. Set up and supervise each process separately.
First, identify which process needs to restart
“Restart an Owncast YouTube stream” can describe two different jobs:

- Restart the Owncast server: systemd can start the Owncast process again after it exits, and start it at boot.
- Restore a YouTube broadcast: the encoder or relay publishing to YouTube may be a separate process. It needs its own recovery configuration.
Owncast describes RTMP-capable broadcasting software as sending video to an Owncast instance, while YouTube describes a stream key used by an encoder. The official Owncast service and architecture material cited here does not document Owncast forwarding a stream onward to YouTube; treat a YouTube publishing relay as a separate process unless your own setup establishes otherwise. This distinction is limited to those official sources, not proof that no third-party integration exists.

Owncast’s service guide covers Linux systems using systemd. Create /etc/systemd/system/owncast.service and adapt the paths and account to your installation. The working directory should contain the Owncast binary and its data/ directory; ExecStart should point to the binary.

WantedBy=multi-user.targetOwncast’s guide explicitly says: “Do not run Owncast as root.” Use a dedicated service account and make sure it can access the installation and write to the data directory.
Load, enable, and verify the unit
- Save the unit file, then reload systemd’s unit definitions:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload - Start Owncast now and configure it to start at boot:
sudo systemctl enable --now owncast - Check the service state:
systemctl status owncastLook for
active (running); check the exit status and messages if it is not active. - Follow the service journal while checking startup or reproducing a failure:
journalctl -u owncast -f - Open the server on port
8080to confirm it is serving, as the Owncast guide suggests. Actual external access depends on your installation and firewall.
Restart=always asks systemd to restart the service after it exits, and RestartSec=5 sets the delay shown in Owncast’s example. This handles process exits; it does not establish that a stream is healthy when the process remains running.
Optional systemd hardening
Owncast’s guide gives an optional hardening example with ProtectSystem=strict, ReadWritePaths=/opt/owncast, NoNewPrivileges=true, SecureBits=noroot, and ProtectHome=read-only. If you use a strict filesystem policy, allow writes to the actual Owncast data path or the service may be unable to store its data. Adjust paths for your installation.

Restart a separate YouTube publisher
If an encoder or relay sends video to YouTube, manage it as its own process rather than assuming a restart of Owncast will recover it. Give it an independent service unit, input, credentials, logs, and restart policy.
This is an illustrative unit shape, not a ready-to-run command. Replace the angle-bracketed placeholders with valid arguments; do not copy them literally.

FFmpeg documents RTMP publishing with FLV output and supports RTMP variants including RTMPS. Use the endpoint and settings provided to your encoder. Keep the YouTube stream key secret; protect the environment file or other secret mechanism and avoid exposing the key in examples or logs.

Use the right recovery layer
Systemd can restart a publisher process that exits. FFmpeg also documents a FIFO muxer pattern that retries after temporary network failures at one-second intervals. That in-process behavior may help with transient output interruptions while FFmpeg remains alive, but it does not guarantee recovery from invalid credentials, an unavailable input, or every YouTube-side condition. These are separate recovery layers, not substitutes for one another.

YouTube says a channel owner or manager can reset a compromised stream key in Live Control Room. After resetting it, update the encoder or relay configuration with the replacement key. Do not treat an automatic process restart as a fix for an invalid or exposed credential.
Troubleshoot in order
- Check the intended unit: run
systemctl status <unit>and inspect its state and exit status. Useowncastor the publisher’s actual unit name. - Read its journal: run
journalctl -u <unit> -fwhile reproducing the issue. Confirm you are reading the process that actually publishes or serves the stream. - Verify service configuration: check
ExecStart, the working directory, binary path, service account, and file permissions. - For Owncast: make sure the data directory is writable by the service account and the web service is reachable on its configured port.
- For a YouTube publisher: confirm the input is available, the stream key is current, and encoder logs show a successful output connection.
- Separate a crash from a stall: a restart policy reacts to a process exit. If the process stays alive while its stream is interrupted, inspect encoder-level recovery and output logs rather than assuming systemd will detect the stalled stream.
Deployment notes
The systemd unit above is for a Linux server running systemd. Owncast directs Docker deployments to use Docker’s restart: unless-stopped policy instead of this systemd example. On macOS, Owncast identifies launchd as the service manager. Use the service mechanism for your deployment rather than applying a Linux systemd unit unchanged.
