Use the current SingleFile extension: SingleFileZ has been completely merged into SingleFile. To save a page as one ordinary HTML file, install SingleFile, let the page finish loading, then click the extension’s toolbar button. To create the compressed, self-extracting file associated with SingleFileZ, change SingleFile’s file format to self-extracting ZIP (universal) first.
Save a webpage as a single file in Chrome
- Install SingleFile from the Chrome Web Store.
- Open the webpage you want to keep and wait for it to finish loading. Pages that load images or other content as you scroll may need extra time or interaction.
- Click the SingleFile icon in Chrome’s extension toolbar. SingleFile saves the page to Chrome’s configured download folder by default.
- Open that folder and look for the saved page. The file’s extension and opening behavior depend on the format selected in SingleFile’s options.
This basic toolbar action saves the current tab. The extension also provides context-menu options for selected content, frames, links, and multiple tabs.

Choose between ordinary HTML and the SingleFileZ-style archive
“One file” can mean two different outputs in SingleFile. Choose based on whether you need a straightforward HTML document or a compressed, self-extracting package.

Set the compressed, self-extracting format
- In Chrome, right-click the SingleFile toolbar button and choose Options.
- Open File format.
- Select self-extracting ZIP (universal).
- Return to the page and click the SingleFile toolbar button to save it in that format.
The setting is the current way to produce the compressed self-extracting format associated with SingleFileZ; it is not the same output as ordinary HTML. Use HTML if you specifically need an HTML file that opens without JavaScript. Use the self-extracting format if you want a compressed single file and accept its JavaScript requirement.
What a saved page can and cannot preserve
A saved page is an offline copy, not necessarily a perfect interactive clone of the live site. Browser security restrictions prevent extensions from saving pages on some domains. Page behavior, resource loading, and extension settings can also affect what is captured.

- Hidden-element removal and unused-style settings can affect how long saving takes.
- Disabling some resource-related options can leave frames or images missing.
- Some content depends on scripts, remote services, or interactions that a saved copy may not reproduce offline.
If the result is incomplete, try saving after the page and its visible resources have loaded, and review SingleFile’s options before changing resource-related settings.
Privacy disclosures
The SingleFileZ FAQ says processing happens in the browser and that the extension does not upload data to third-party servers. It also notes the extension may download page resources that were not displayed or cached. The Chrome Web Store listing reports the developer’s disclosure that it will not collect or use user data. These are statements by the project and developer, not an independent security audit.

Can I open the self-extracting file without JavaScript?
No. The self-extracting ZIP format requires JavaScript to open. Choose ordinary HTML if you need a file that does not depend on JavaScript.
