Use your browser’s Print dialog and save to PDF, then tune the preview: enable background graphics, keep the page in its original layout, and adjust paper size, orientation, margins, or scale only when content is clipped or paginates badly. These settings can make a PDF look closer to the screen, but print styling and page breaks mean an exact visual copy is not guaranteed.
Save a webpage as a PDF in your browser
Open the page you want, launch Print, choose the browser’s PDF destination, inspect the preview, and save. The available labels and controls vary by browser, operating system, and version.

- Save the file locally. See Google’s Chrome desktop instructions.
Chrome on Android
- Open the page and tap More > Share > Print.

- Select a PDF destination, adjust settings, and inspect the preview before saving.
Edge documents controls for orientation, pages, margins, scale, headers and footers, and background graphics. Its Immersive Reader can produce a cleaner, text-first printout, but is not available on every site. To print only a selection, select the text or images, right-click, and choose Print. See Microsoft’s Edge printing guide.

- Open the print dialog and choose Save to PDF as the destination.
- In More settings, adjust paper size, scale, pages per sheet, margins, headers and footers, and print backgrounds.
- Choose Original when retaining the site layout matters; use Simplified when readability matters more than visual fidelity.
Firefox does not combine Simplified format with print backgrounds, and Mozilla cautions that pages may be set up to look different on paper. See Mozilla’s Firefox printing guide.

Settings that make the PDF look more like the page
Change one setting at a time and use the preview to see its effect. The best choice depends on the page: an article, a wide spreadsheet-like table, and a landing page with background imagery may need different settings.
Enable background graphics
Turn on background printing if the page uses colored sections, patterns, or background images that matter to its design. Microsoft advises including background graphics when the preview or output differs from the webpage. This setting can use more ink when printing on paper, but for a PDF the main consideration is whether those visual elements belong in the saved document. See Microsoft’s guidance.
Choose Original rather than reader or simplified mode
Use the browser’s original page format when matching the layout is the priority. Simplified or reader modes remove surrounding material and can make text easier to read, but may discard the design. Firefox’s Simplified mode disables print backgrounds. Edge Immersive Reader is another text-first option, but availability varies by website.

Fit the page without shrinking text unnecessarily
- Orientation: Try landscape for wide tables or diagrams; portrait often suits article text.
- Paper size: Check this before reducing scale. A suitable page size may prevent needless shrinking.
- Scale: Reduce it modestly if content runs beyond the printable area. Recheck text size: fitting everything onto fewer pages can make it hard to read.
- Margins: Adjust them when whitespace is excessive or content is near the edge. Very narrow margins may still not reproduce a screen layout exactly.
Edge documents fit-to-printable-area, actual size, and custom scaling. Firefox exposes paper size, scale, and margins. See Edge’s settings and Firefox’s settings.
Decide whether to include headers and footers
Turn browser-added headers and footers off if dates, URLs, or page numbers make the document less like the webpage. Leave them on when page numbering or the source URL is useful. Edge and Firefox provide controls for these additions.
Inspect pages and page range
Before saving, check every preview page for clipped columns, missing backgrounds, blank pages, tiny text, and content omitted below the fold. Set a page range only when you intentionally want an excerpt. Chrome’s print dialog provides destination and settings selection; Edge and Firefox document page controls. See Chrome, Edge, and Firefox.

Why a PDF may still differ from the screen
Websites can use print-specific styling, so a browser may hide or rearrange elements that appear onscreen. A PDF also has fixed-size pages: long content must be divided across pages, and wide content must fit, shrink, or reflow. Firefox explicitly warns that a webpage may look different on paper. Chrome for Developers describes page boxes and @page rules for setting page size and margins, as well as browser-generated headers and footers. See Mozilla’s explanation and Chrome for Developers’ print-margin overview, published 2024-10-30.
When fidelity is more important than a neat, compact document, keep the original format and backgrounds, choose paper dimensions that suit the content, and accept additional pages rather than shrinking everything until it is unreadable. If the site itself supplies a PDF download, compare it with the browser print output; a supplied document may be designed for pagination, but its appearance is not guaranteed to match the live page.
Troubleshoot common PDF problems
| What you see | What to try |
|---|---|
| Colors, background images, or shaded sections are missing | Enable print backgrounds or background graphics, then check the preview again. If using Firefox Simplified format, switch to Original because Simplified and print backgrounds cannot be combined. |
| Content is cut off at the side | Try landscape orientation for wide content, confirm the paper size, and reduce scale modestly if needed. Check that text remains legible. |
| Text is too small | Restore a larger scale, use a paper size or orientation that better fits the content, or accept more pages rather than squeezing everything onto fewer sheets. |
| Large empty areas or awkward page breaks | Review paper size, margins, and scale in the preview. Webpage print styling may also insert breaks or alter spacing, so there may not be a setting that reproduces the screen layout exactly. |
| Navigation, ads, or other surrounding content remains | Try a reader-style output if a cleaner document matters more than preserving design. Edge Immersive Reader is not available on every site; Firefox Simplified mode trades away background printing. |
| Browser-added URL, date, or page numbers appear | Turn off headers and footers in the print settings if those details are not wanted. |
| Some content below the visible page is missing | Inspect the full preview, not just the first page. Some sites load content as you scroll; scroll through the webpage before opening Print, then review the preview again. Browser behavior can vary by site. |
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a rendered page capture rather than the browser’s paginated print layout, ScreenshotNeo can return a PDF through one API request. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers; its PDF output is a capture workflow, not a guarantee that every webpage will become a print-ready, multi-page document. See the API documentation for parameters.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will saving a webpage as a PDF preserve clickable links?
The browser print workflows described here focus on visual output; the cited browser guides do not establish how every site’s links behave in the saved file. Check the PDF itself if clickable links are important.
Can I save only part of a webpage as a PDF?
Edge documents printing selected text or images: select the material, right-click, and choose Print. For other browsers, the available selection behavior may depend on the site and platform.
Should I use the webpage’s own PDF download instead?
Use it when the site offers a document intended for downloading or printing, then compare its layout with the browser-generated PDF. Neither route guarantees a pixel-for-pixel match to the live page.
