How to Run a Prerecorded YouTube Live Stream on a Linux Server with systemd

A practical guide to sending prerecorded video to YouTube Live with FFmpeg on Linux, supervising it with systemd, and checking preview, recovery, and service logs.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To run a prerecorded video as a YouTube Live encoder feed from Linux, send the file to the ingest URL shown in YouTube Studio with FFmpeg in real-time mode, confirm it appears in Live Control Room, then run that tested foreground process under systemd. A scheduled event still needs you to review its preview and click Go live; scheduling it does not start the broadcast.

How the YouTube Live pieces fit together

YouTube separates the viewer-facing broadcast from the incoming media feed: its API calls them a liveBroadcast and a liveStream. The broadcast is the event viewers watch; the stream is the encoder feed sent to YouTube. Your FFmpeg process connects to the ingest URL with the matching stream key.

If you want viewers to have a reminder and a shareable upcoming watch page, create a scheduled event. YouTube’s scheduled-stream guidance explains scheduling and reminders. You still need to connect the encoder, inspect the preview in Live Control Room, and click Go live when ready.

1. Create or schedule the YouTube event

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live. Create or schedule an encoder stream, then set its title, privacy, and event details.

  2. Get the server URL and stream key displayed for the selected stream settings. Use those current values rather than copying an endpoint from an unrelated tutorial. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe the Studio workflow; some prior settings may be reusable.

  3. At the event time, connect FFmpeg and wait for the preview in Live Control Room. Check the preview and stream health before clicking Go live. After the event, end it in Live Control Room and stop the encoder from sending data. YouTube says events under 12 hours are automatically archived; verify the current Studio guidance for your event, since workflows can change.

Protect the stream key

YouTube says, “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” See its stream-key security guidance. Store the key in a file readable only by the service account or in another secret store. Do not put it in a public script, world-readable unit file, screenshot, shell history, or logs. If exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the service.

2. Choose the ingest protocol and verify FFmpeg

Use the server URL and key shown for your stream. For API-based setups, YouTube’s Live Streaming API can provide primary and backup ingestion addresses and a stream name. The regular Studio workflow provides the values to use directly.

RTMPS is encrypted RTMP and is a sensible default when supported by your FFmpeg build. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance specifies the secure endpoint requirements, including port 443 and the correct TLS server name (SNI). Check available protocols on the server with:

ffmpeg -protocols

Confirm that the installed build supports the protocol and URL handling you intend to use. FFmpeg documents streaming protocols and a real-time file-to-RTMP example; build configuration can affect what is available. Do not substitute a sample endpoint for the one issued for your channel’s stream.

3. Test the video in the foreground

First run FFmpeg interactively using the real file and the current ingest URL. The basic pattern is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4 -f flv 'rtmp://server/app/stream-key'

This is a shape example, not a ready-to-run YouTube command. Replace the URL with the current address from Live Control Room. For RTMPS, use the channel’s RTMPS ingest address and verify support in the installed FFmpeg build. Treat the stream key as a secret even if an example command places it in a URL.

Check whether the source can be sent as-is

Do not add -c copy automatically. Whether the file can be passed through depends on its codecs, timestamps, frame rate, audio layout, and container compatibility. If it needs encoding, choose codecs, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate deliberately for the source and YouTube’s current recommendations. The numeric encoder settings are not established here, so there is no universal bitrate or encoding command to copy safely.

Watch for FFmpeg errors and check the Live Control Room preview and stream health. A successful connection alone is not enough to establish that viewers will receive suitable audio and video.

4. Run the tested FFmpeg command under systemd

Run FFmpeg directly in the foreground as a system service. Use an unprivileged service account, absolute paths, a controlled working directory, and a protected configuration file for credentials. Keep the command that systemd runs aligned with the version you tested interactively.

This unit is a skeleton, not a tested drop-in configuration. Replace paths and arguments with your working local setup. Protect /etc/youtube-live/stream.env and keep it out of source control. Systemd’s environment-file parsing and command-line expansion are not identical to shell behavior in every field or version. Confirm how your installed systemd parses the intended URL and secret; if needed, use a correctly escaped literal or a wrapper with safe argument handling. Consider whether local users can inspect process arguments on your server.

  3. Load the unit and start it when you are ready to test:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
    sudo systemctl daemon-reload
    sudo systemctl enable --now youtube-live.service
  4. Inspect service status and logs:

    sudo systemctl status youtube-live.service
    sudo journalctl -u youtube-live.service
  5. Confirm FFmpeg is running, the preview appears in Live Control Room, and audio, video, and stream health are acceptable before relying on the service for the event.

5. Decide how the stream should end or recover

A finite input ordinarily ends when FFmpeg reaches the end of the file. Decide whether the YouTube event should end there or whether the program must repeat. If repeating, verify the installed FFmpeg’s input-loop behavior and test timestamps and event duration with the actual file and event before scheduling it. Do not assume that a systemd restart repeats an input; restart-on-failure acts after process exit and is not a looping feature.

With Restart=on-failure, systemd can restart FFmpeg after a failure. FFmpeg also documents FIFO output and retry/recovery options for temporary network issues in its protocol documentation. These mechanisms address different failure cases. A reconnect or process restart can create a gap or interact with the broadcast state, so neither guarantees uninterrupted playback. Test recovery on the exact setup and monitor Live Control Room.

6. Preflight before the scheduled event

YouTube’s streaming tips recommend advance testing and checking the preview, stream availability, audio/video quality, and any local archive. The same guidance recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom over the total stream bitrate, including primary and backup feeds where used. That is YouTube’s recommendation, not a guarantee of performance.

  • Confirm the service account can read the media file and credential file.

  • Check available outbound upload capacity and account for other traffic on the server’s network.

Troubleshooting

Symptom What to check Next step
No preview in Live Control Room FFmpeg may have exited, or the URL/key may be incorrect or tied to different stream settings. Check systemctl status and the journal; compare the configured values with the current Studio settings.
TLS or connection errors The RTMPS URL, port 443, TLS server name (SNI), or local FFmpeg protocol support may be wrong. Verify the current channel-provided endpoint and build support; check YouTube’s RTMPS requirements.
Preview starts but the stream buffers Available upload capacity, network congestion, bitrate, or a YouTube health warning may be involved. Review stream health and available bandwidth; apply YouTube’s 20% headroom recommendation.
The service keeps restarting FFmpeg’s exit status, file permissions, path configuration, or credentials may differ under the service account. Read the journal and test file and credential access as that account; correct the failure before relying on restart behavior.
The stream stops at the end of the file The input was exhausted; restart-on-failure does not mean repeat the media. Decide whether the event should end or repeat, then test looping and timestamp behavior explicitly before scheduling.

When FFmpeg on Linux is the right fit

A Linux server running FFmpeg gives you control over the process, files, and encoding configuration, but you are responsible for the machine, outbound capacity, credentials, and recovery testing. A rented VPS is an option if you do not have a suitable server; compare sustained upload capacity, route reliability, location, egress charges or limits, and CPU capacity if transcoding. A dedicated hardware encoder is not mandatory for this workflow; YouTube recommends professional hardware encoders for higher-production-value events.
