On a computer, open your document and choose File > Download, then select the format you need. For a large Google Docs file that will not download as a PDF in Chrome, Google’s fallback is File > Print, then Save as PDF under Destination. EPUB is listed among Google Docs export formats in Google’s Android help; the available choices can vary by platform.
Save a Google Doc as a PDF on a computer
- Open the document in Google Docs.
- Select File > Download.
- Choose PDF Document (.pdf).
- Open the downloaded PDF and check its layout before sharing or printing it.

If a large document will not download as a PDF in Chrome
- In the document, select File > Print.
- In the print dialog, select Save as PDF beside Destination.
- Click Save and choose where to store the PDF.
Google documents this as a workaround for large Docs files. Check the print preview: a pageless document may look different from the on-screen view, and wide tables may be squeezed to fit the page. See Google’s print instructions.
Download a Google Doc as a Word file
- Open the document and select File > Download.
- Choose the Microsoft Word option, commonly displayed as Microsoft Word (.docx).
- Open the downloaded file in Word or another compatible editor to confirm it converted as expected.
The choices shown in the Download menu are the ones available for your document. If you want to send a copy by email instead of saving it locally, select File > Email as attachment and choose Word or PDF as the attachment format. Google describes this option in its guide to switching from Microsoft Word to Google Docs.

Can you save a Google Doc as an EPUB?
Google’s Android Docs help lists EPUB as an export format, alongside DOCX, RTF, TXT, PDF, ODT, and HTML as a ZIP. This format list is specifically documented for Android, so do not assume the same options or menu sequence will appear on a computer or iPhone/iPad. On a computer, check File > Download for the formats available in your menu. Google’s Android Docs guide provides the Android-specific format list.
