Google’s logo has changed to meet a practical challenge: its identity had to work beyond a desktop search page, across phones, watches, TVs, cars, and other screens. In 2015, Google refreshed its logo family for that wider range of devices and ways to interact. In September 2025, it announced a brighter, gradient version of its four-color G as the company-wide icon, with rollout continuing across products and services.
Why Google changed its visual identity in 2015
Google’s 2015 refresh responded to a shift in how people encountered its products. The company said its identity had originally been built for a single desktop browser page, but Google was now used across many devices and interaction types—from tapping and typing to speaking. The design goal was an identity that could remain recognizable and useful at different sizes and on different screens.

Google described the qualities it wanted to preserve as “simple, uncluttered, colorful, friendly.” Those words express the company’s own design aims; they are not independent findings about how users respond to the logo. Google’s September 1, 2015 announcement explains the reasoning behind the refresh.

The Google wordmark and the compact G are different parts of the identity
The wordmark is the full “Google” name. The compact G is an icon for situations where the full wordmark is too large or impractical. In 2015, Google replaced its small blue “g” icon with a four-color G designed to match the refreshed logo. The change linked the compact mark more closely to the broader identity while giving Google a recognizable symbol suited to tighter spaces.

What changed in Google’s G logo in 2025
On September 29, 2025, Google announced a brighter four-color gradient treatment for the G. The company said the brighter gradient had first appeared in Search earlier that year, and that the updated G would now represent Google across its brand. Google connected the design to what it described as the company’s evolution in the AI era.
The 2015 and 2025 changes had different stated contexts: the earlier refresh addressed a move from one desktop destination to many devices and input methods; the later update presented the gradient G as a company-wide icon reflecting Google’s stated evolution. The 2025 announcement described a rollout that would continue across more products, platforms, and services over the coming months. It did not say that every Google surface had already changed. A brief look back at Google’s logo history
Google’s September 2023 post marking 25 years since Search launched included a Doodle animation showing logo versions from the preceding 25 years. It offers a dated glimpse of how the identity has changed, but the anniversary is a company milestone—not evidence of logo recognition or business performance. The post is available at Google’s 25th-anniversary page.
What the logo can—and cannot—tell us
The 2025 update lets Google express its chosen identity through a brighter gradient icon, while the 2015 refresh shows how the company adapted its logo for a broader mix of screens and interactions. The title’s “innovation and excellence” is an interpretation, not a measured effect or a claim established by these announcements. Google’s statements explain its intentions; they do not show that the logo itself causes innovation, excellence, or user trust. No independent survey, experiment, or published statistic in the cited material measures those effects.
