To format values as currency in Google Sheets on a computer, select the cells, then choose Format > Number and pick a currency format. To remove a displayed dollar sign without changing a numeric value, select a number format that does not show a currency symbol. In both cases, formatting changes how the value appears; it does not turn the number into text.
Apply currency formatting to cells
- Select the cell or range you want to format.
- Choose Format > Number.
- Choose a currency option that matches the display you want. If the standard options do not fit, choose Custom currency to select a currency and adjust properties such as the displayed decimal places.
Check the result in the spreadsheet. Available formats and their appearance can vary with the spreadsheet’s locale.

Remove the dollar sign but keep the number
- Select the currency-formatted cells.
- Open Format > Number.
- Choose a number format without a currency symbol, or use a suitable custom number format.
This changes the display of a numeric cell, not its underlying value. The value remains available for arithmetic and other spreadsheet operations; you do not need to delete a dollar-sign character with a text-cleanup formula.
Choose between a cell format and a formula
Use cell formatting when a value should remain numeric and you only want to change how it looks. Google Sheets also has DOLLAR(number, [number_of_places]), but that function returns a locale-specific currency string as text. It is useful when a formula needs to produce text formatted as currency, not when you simply want to display an existing number with or without a symbol.

When to change the spreadsheet locale
If the default currency, separators, or other number formats are wrong throughout a spreadsheet, change its locale on a computer using File > Settings > Locale, then save the settings. Google says changing a spreadsheet’s locale and time zone changes its default currency, date, and number formatting. This is a spreadsheet-wide setting that affects everyone working in the file, so use a cell format instead when only selected cells need a different currency display.
