Request your Instagram download in Accounts Center
Instagram’s built-in export is managed through Meta Accounts Center. The menu labels and layout can change, so follow the current choices shown in your account. The route described in the Missouri Secretary of State’s July 2024 browser guide is:

Choose Your information and permissions, then Download your information.

Select the Instagram profile whose data you want to save.

Choose the information to include and where you want the copy delivered. If offered, you can request all available information or select particular categories. You may also see a choice to download to a device or transfer a copy to another service.

Set the date range and any file or media options that Instagram currently presents, then create the files.

Zapier’s May 2024 guide describes a similar Accounts Center route on desktop and mobile. The available categories and options may vary, so do not assume that every account will show the same settings.

Choose what to include and where to keep it
Scope the export to your needs
For a broad personal archive, select all available information if that option appears. If you only need particular posts or account records, choose relevant categories where the interface allows it. Meta describes the download feature as covering content such as messages, photos, videos, and timeline posts. Meta’s 2020 announcement also describes download tools as including information about how people used its services, such as interactions and inferences. The exact categories available to you depend on the current export choices; do not assume the archive will contain every item or every historical version.
Select a destination
Choose a download to your device if you want a local copy you can store yourself. If Accounts Center offers a transfer destination, use it only if that service suits your needs. Meta’s Privacy Tools and Information Security overview says users can “Easily access, manage, download or delete the personal data you’ve provided.”

Review file and media settings
Available format and media-quality settings can change. The Missouri Secretary of State’s 2024 guide recommended HTML and high media quality, but those are that guide’s recommendations—not a universal or verified current requirement. Use the options shown in your own export screen and choose settings that fit how you plan to browse or store the archive.

Creating an archive may take time. The Missouri guide reports that collection can take up to 14 days and that the download link is active for four days; Zapier’s May 2024 guide gives similar expectations of up to two weeks to prepare and four days to download. These are reported estimates, not guarantees. Follow the timing in Instagram’s current notification or export screen, and download the files as soon as they are ready so you do not miss an expiration window.

Keep the archive somewhere you control
After downloading, move or copy the archive to storage you control, such as your computer or a backup drive. If the information matters to you, consider keeping a second copy in a separate place to reduce the risk of losing it. An external drive or portable SSD is optional; you do not need special hardware to request an Instagram export. Avoid third-party tools that ask for your Instagram password when the built-in export meets your needs.
