That gives you control over the hosting environment, but it also makes your team responsible for its operation and security controls. Whether code and development context remain inside that environment depends on the model and data paths you configure; self-hosting alone does not establish regulatory or contractual compliance.
What is self-hosted IBM Bob?
Bob’s backend runs as a workload in an OpenShift cluster managed by the customer. The installation includes an operator namespace and an instance namespace containing Bob application services, databases, authentication services and supporting workloads. Developers can continue using Bob’s IDE extensions and BobShell.

Its deployment materials describe self-hosted, air-gapped and hybrid model configurations. This supersedes IBM’s April 2026 launch announcement, which described on-premises deployment as a future target. Availability and supported configurations can change, so check IBM’s current Bob documentation when planning a deployment.
A dedicated OpenShift cluster is not required, but a shared cluster must have sufficient capacity for Bob and any optional components. The organization running the cluster also takes on lifecycle and platform responsibilities that would otherwise sit with a managed-service provider.

Where does Bob process code and development context?
There are two separate questions: where Bob’s backend runs, and where the selected model performs inference. A customer-managed backend does not automatically mean that every prompt, code snippet, development-context item, artifact, telemetry record or administrative record stays on that infrastructure.
IBM says a supported self-hosted model configuration can keep code, development context and build artifacts within the customer-managed environment. At general availability, IBM listed NVIDIA Nemotron and Poolside Laguna as self-hosted model options. Its listed hybrid or private-SaaS model choices were Claude Sonnet 5.0, Claude Opus 4.8, Gemini 3.7 Flash and OpenAI GPT 5.6 Sol. These are version-specific product claims from IBM’s September 30, 2026 announcement, not a guarantee that every model remains supported or is available in every deployment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWith a hybrid configuration, Bob can connect to an approved external model service. That can allow an organization to use an external service for work it considers less restricted, but it changes the data-processing boundary: information sent for inference may be processed outside the customer-managed environment. Confirm the model endpoint, provider’s terms and retention practices, and what Bob sends to that endpoint before enabling it.

IBM also describes air-gapped configurations. An air gap may address network-connectivity requirements, but it does not by itself establish which data is stored, logged or retained within the environment. Verify those data paths and the precise supported configuration against your architecture and IBM’s current documentation.
What privacy and compliance control does self-hosting provide?
Self-hosting can help an organization keep infrastructure and, with a supported customer-installed model configuration, inference within a boundary it controls. That may support a data-residency or network-restriction design. It does not certify that the organization meets a law, regulator’s rule, customer contract or internal control. Compliance depends on the full system, the selected model and the organization’s implementation and procedures.
IBM’s materials place security-event logging and monitoring at the OpenShift platform level rather than providing them as a Bob capability. The customer must configure, operate and retain those logs to meet its own security, audit and compliance requirements. Treat that as a design responsibility: decide what events need to be captured, who can access them, how long they are retained and how they reach the people responsible for monitoring and response.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Before approval, document the data flows and control ownership for the deployment. In particular, establish:
- Which code, prompts, development context and build artifacts Bob processes, and which model receives them.
- Where each configured model endpoint runs, what network route reaches it, and which identities and credentials authorize access.
- What data is written to persistent storage, backups and platform logs, and the applicable access and retention controls.
- Who owns identity management, upgrades, vulnerability response, availability, incident response and audit evidence.
- How the chosen configuration maps to the specific residency obligations, contractual commitments and regulatory requirements that apply to your organization.
IBM’s October 2026 newsroom release attributes a finding that 68% of surveyed executives find it challenging to meet data-residency and sovereignty requirements across geographies to the IBM Institute for Business Value report The Calculus of AI Sovereignty, published in June 2026. This is survey context about the broader challenge; it does not measure Bob’s security or compliance effectiveness.
What does the customer have to operate?
The customer is responsible for operating the OpenShift deployment, including upgrades, scaling, availability, identity, networking and storage controls. IBM’s published requirements also call out connectivity to configured LLM endpoints, container registries, LDAP or Active Directory where used, Bob ingress, DNS and TLS validation. Persistent storage supports databases, search, cache, configuration, certificates and backups.

Those dependencies are part of the privacy boundary, not just installation details. Review routes, credentials, logging and storage behavior in the topology you will actually run. Plan backup capacity, high availability, growth and OpenShift platform overhead as well as Bob’s listed resource footprint.

IBM’s system-requirements page lists Bob self-hosted 2.0.0 with Bob IDE 2.2.0 and Bob Shell 2.0.5, on amd64 worker nodes running OpenShift 4.20, 4.21 or 4.22. The figures below are IBM’s published sizing references, not universal hardware recommendations. Actual requirements depend on optional stacks, workload growth and platform overhead.
| Configuration or reference | vCPU | Memory | Persistent storage | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bob Core aggregate baseline | 22.1 | 35.1 GiB | About 30 GiB | IBM system-requirements page; published baseline for Bob Core. |
| Production reference | 28.1 | 41.1 GiB | About 50 GiB | IBM system-requirements page; production reference, not a universal minimum. |
| Headroom recommendation | Roughly 36.5 | 53.4 GiB | Not stated in the cited requirement figures | IBM system-requirements page; headroom recommendation. |
Optional Java, IBM i or IBM Z packages change the footprint. IBM marks some Z Understand figures as provisional while benchmarking continues. Recheck the requirements for the exact Bob version and add-ons you intend to deploy rather than sizing from the Core figures alone.
Which deployment model fits your data boundary?
| Deployment choice | Where Bob’s backend runs | Inference and connectivity consideration | Key trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| IBM-managed SaaS | Managed by IBM rather than on the customer’s OpenShift cluster. | Confirm the service’s model, data handling and terms for your use case; the cited self-hosted materials do not establish those SaaS details. | Less customer responsibility for running Bob’s backend, with less direct control over its hosting environment. |
| Self-hosted with a customer-installed model | Customer-managed OpenShift. | IBM says supported configurations can keep code, development context and build artifacts within the customer-managed environment. | More control over the deployment boundary, with the customer taking on platform operations and controls. |
| Self-hosted with an approved hybrid model service | Customer-managed OpenShift. | Bob connects to an approved external model service; data sent for inference can cross the customer’s infrastructure boundary. | Allows an external model path, but requires review of its endpoint, terms, data flows and network controls. |
| Air-gapped configuration | Customer-controlled environment. | IBM lists air-gapped as a deployment choice; validate the supported model and operational design for the isolated environment. | Addresses connectivity constraints, while leaving data handling, logging and compliance controls to be verified. |
The SaaS comparison above is limited to the operational distinction established by IBM’s deployment materials; it is not a claim about SaaS data residency or specific controls. Select by mapping each workload’s sensitivity and applicable obligations to the actual model endpoint, network path and operating responsibilities—not by treating “private” and “public” as the only choices.

IBM’s IBM Bob Premium Package for Z is a specific self-hosted example. IBM says Bob services run in enterprise-managed OpenShift and support approved internally or externally hosted models through the Bob Model Gateway. The announcement describes IBM Z application understanding, IBM-curated Z-specific context and modernization workflows. If the deployment uses an external model, that model path remains part of the data-processing boundary review.
