What’s actually slowing this PC down?

To save a webpage as one HTML file in Chrome, install the SingleFile extension, open the page, wait for it to finish loading, then click SingleFile in the extensions toolbar. The saved file goes to Chrome’s configured download folder. It packages page resources for offline reference, but it is not guaranteed to preserve every interactive feature.
Save a page as one HTML file
- Install SingleFile: Open the SingleFile Chrome Web Store listing and add the extension to Chrome.
- Load the page: Navigate to the page you want to keep and wait until it has finished loading. If images or other content are still appearing, give them time to load before capturing.
- Capture it: Click the SingleFile button in Chrome’s extensions toolbar. SingleFile processes the page and saves it as one HTML file in Chrome’s configured download folder.
- Check the result: Open the downloaded HTML file from your downloads folder. If the page looks incomplete, see the limitations and troubleshooting sections below.
If SingleFile is still processing, clicking its button again cancels the capture.

Capture selected content, frames, links, or tabs
For a capture other than the whole current page, use SingleFile’s context-menu options. Depending on what you need, you can capture the current tab, selected content, a selected frame, selected links, or multiple tabs. The “Annotate and save the page…” option lets you highlight text, add notes, and remove content before saving.

What “complete” means—and what may not work offline
SingleFile embeds page resources such as CSS, images, fonts, and frames into a single HTML file. That makes the result convenient to move and keep as a self-contained reference, but it does not make the file a guaranteed working copy of the live website.
- Interactive features can change or stop working. SingleFile blocks scripts by default because they can alter page rendering and may not work offline. Folding titles, dynamic maps, carousels, and other script-driven elements may not behave as they do on the live page.
- Some resources may not be captured. A site or resource can be inaccessible to the extension. Some sites require a Referer header for image downloads; SingleFile leaves that setting off by default for privacy.
- Browser permissions can limit access. Chrome blocks extension access on some domains. It also blocks extension access to local file pages by default.
SingleFile’s FAQ describes settings for retaining scripts and raw page content, but enabling them does not guarantee that interactive behavior will work offline. Change these options only if they suit your use case; the default capture is better suited to preserving a readable page than reproducing a site’s full behavior.

Local saving, cloud destinations, and local files
In the normal workflow, SingleFile processes the page in the browser and saves it to Chrome’s download destination; it does not upload the page to a third-party server. Cloud uploads are optional: if you enable a destination such as Google Drive, Dropbox, GitHub, or WebDAV in the extension’s options, the saved file can be sent there.
To process local files or display SingleFile’s infobar on a saved local page, enable Allow access to file URLs in the extension’s settings. Chrome does not grant that access by default, so you do not need to enable it for ordinary webpages.

Troubleshooting a missing or incomplete save
- The file does not appear where expected: Check Chrome’s configured download folder and recent downloads. SingleFile uses the browser’s download destination by default.
- The saved page is missing images: Wait for the live page to finish loading before capture. If a particular site requires a Referer header to fetch its images, review SingleFile’s relevant setting; it is off by default for privacy.
- Menus, maps, carousels, or other controls do not work: Scripts are blocked by default, and retaining scripts does not guarantee offline operation. Treat the file as an archival view rather than a functional replacement for the site.
- SingleFile cannot process a page: Chrome restricts extension access on some domains. For a local file, enable Allow access to file URLs if you specifically need the extension to process it.
- The capture is taking too long or should be stopped: Click the SingleFile button again to cancel processing.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need an image or PDF of a page rather than a self-contained HTML archive, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot with one GET request. For example, this cURL command saves a WebP capture of Stripe:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. It accepts cookie banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, with response headers identifying the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server lets AI agents use screenshot and page-information tools. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

When SingleFile is the right format
Choose SingleFile when you want one local HTML file that can preserve a readable snapshot along with many of its page resources. If your priority is a guaranteed offline version of site interactions, no single-file capture can promise that; keep the live URL as well when continued access or dynamic behavior matters.
