You do not need the SingleFile extension just to view the archive: SingleFile pages are ordinary HTML files that can be displayed offline in a browser.
Open the saved HTML file
- Find the SingleFile page where you saved it. The browser’s configured download folder is the extension’s default save location, unless you chose another folder.
- Check that the file ends in
.htmland is the saved page, not a shortcut to the original website. - Double-click the file, or open it from your browser using its Open File command. The page should load from your device.
The extension is for saving pages; it is not required to display an existing archive. Browser menu labels vary, so use your browser’s file-opening option if double-clicking opens the file in another app.

What works offline—and what may not
A SingleFile page is a snapshot, not a guarantee that the original site’s full functionality has been preserved. The file can include page resources such as images, stylesheets, fonts, and frames, but some content may still depend on the original server or may not have been captured.

- Scripts and interactive features: The SingleFile project FAQ says scripts are removed by default because they can change how a page renders and may not work offline. Folding titles, dynamic maps, and carousels are examples of features that may not behave as they did on the live site.
- Remote services and links: A feature that needs a network connection or a service on the original site cannot be assumed to work offline. A saved link may still point to the web rather than to content inside the archive.
- Missing images or other resources: Some resources may not have been embedded. The project FAQ notes that images on some sites requiring a
Refererheader can be a capture limitation.
Reconnecting to the internet may allow remotely hosted content to load, but that does not make the file self-contained. Settings that retain scripts or other content apply to future captures; they cannot add material that was omitted from an archive you already saved.

Troubleshoot a file that will not display as expected
The file opens as text or in the wrong app
Confirm the extension is .html, then open the file from a browser’s Open File command. If the file manager is associating HTML with a text editor or another app, choose a browser to open it.
The page appears, but SingleFile’s infobar is missing
The infobar is an extension feature, not a requirement for viewing the archive. If you want it, enable Allow access to file URLs on the SingleFile extension page. Without that permission, the saved page can still open normally.

Images or layout are incomplete
The capture may not have included every resource. For example, the project FAQ identifies images on some sites that require a Referer header as a possible limitation. Reconnecting may let the browser retrieve remote resources, but it will not repair an incomplete offline copy.

The feature may rely on JavaScript that was removed when the page was saved, or on a remote service that is unavailable offline. SingleFile offers settings for retaining scripts or raw page content in future captures, but changing a setting now will not retroactively alter this file.

When an HTML snapshot is not enough for preservation
For professional or academic web archiving, do not treat a SingleFile page as a complete preservation copy. The SingleFile project FAQ cautions that it is not a tool used by web-archiving professionals, especially in academic settings, and points readers toward tools based on the WARC specification. This is a distinction in purpose, not a comparison of particular WARC tools.

Do I need the SingleFile extension installed to view an archive?
No. A saved SingleFile HTML page can be opened in a browser without the extension.

Can I make an existing archive fully offline after saving it?
Not necessarily. Reconnecting can retrieve some remotely hosted content, but it cannot restore resources or scripts that were not saved in the file.
