Safely remove a USB drive in Windows 10 or Windows 11
- Find the Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media icon in the taskbar notification area. If you do not see it, select the option to show hidden icons.
- Select the icon, then choose Eject for the correct USB drive.
- Unplug the drive only after Windows displays the “Safe To Remove Hardware” notification or the drive disappears from the eject menu.
Microsoft also documents an alternate route: open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices, find the removable hardware under Other devices, and choose Remove. Disconnect the drive after it disappears from that section. The taskbar eject menu is the clearest route for USB storage. If the icon is missing, confirm that the drive is connected and recognized; Microsoft notes that the icon may not appear otherwise. Its support page also describes enabling the icon in taskbar settings. Microsoft’s Windows instructions cover Windows 10 and 11. Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so interface details may differ for people still using it.

Use any of these Finder methods:
- Select the drive in Finder and choose File > Eject.
- Click the eject button beside the drive in the Finder sidebar.
- Drag the drive’s desktop icon to the Trash.
Wait for the drive to disappear before unplugging it. If macOS will not eject the disk, an app or another user may be using files on it. Close the open files and apps that are accessing the drive, then try again. Apple’s storage-device guide describes the Finder eject options.

Safely remove a USB drive in Ubuntu Linux
These steps apply to Ubuntu’s Files app; Linux menus vary by distribution and desktop environment.
- Find the USB drive in the Files sidebar.
- Click the eject icon beside its name, or right-click the name and choose Eject.
- Wait for the drive to disappear before unplugging it.
If Ubuntu reports that the volume is busy, cancel the eject, close the files being used by an application, and try again. Ubuntu warns that ejecting anyway may cause errors in applications that still have those files open. Ubuntu Help’s instructions cover the Files workflow. For terminal use or another Linux distribution, consult that distribution’s documentation for the right unmount command and how to identify the correct device; device names vary.

What to do if the drive will not eject
- Check that you selected the right drive. Confirm it is connected and recognized; on Windows, the eject icon may be absent if no removable device is recognized.
- Close anything using the drive. Save and close open files, then quit apps that may still be accessing them and retry.
- On a Mac, follow Apple’s escalation steps. If the disk still will not eject, log out and back in, then try again. If it still fails, shut down the Mac before disconnecting the disk, then start the Mac again. Apple’s disk-ejection troubleshooting guide gives this sequence.
There is no universal number of seconds to wait that makes an active or blocked operation safe to interrupt. Use the operating system’s completion signal, and resolve any warning before disconnecting.
