To check a NAS for silent data corruption, identify its filesystem and checksum settings, run the NAS-supported data or filesystem scrub, then review the results and restore any data that cannot be repaired from a known-good backup. A SMART test checks drive health; it does not compare file contents with stored checksums. RAID redundancy may help a scrub repair damage, but it is not a backup.
What a NAS scrub can—and cannot—tell you
A data scrub reads stored blocks and checks them against checksums or redundancy information. Btrfs scrub validates checksum-protected data and metadata; OpenZFS scrub checks block checksums across the pool, including blocks that have not recently been read. A mismatch means the stored data does not agree with its integrity information.

Detection is not the same as repair. Repair is possible only when the system has a verified good copy, such as a valid replica in a redundant pool. If there is no good copy, a scrub can identify damage without reconstructing the intended file. A scrub also is not necessarily a general filesystem-structure check: Btrfs documentation explicitly distinguishes scrub from btrfs check.

Before you start, identify what the NAS is checking
Record the NAS model, operating-system version, filesystem, storage-pool or RAID layout, and whether data checksums are enabled for the folders you care about. Do not assume that one setting covers every volume, shared folder, or file type.
For example, Synology’s DSM 7.2 software specification says its Btrfs silent-corruption detection depends on enabling the shared-folder data checksum option. The same specification lists RAID types eligible for corrupted-data recovery, but feature and model support vary. Check the current documentation and interface for your exact NAS and pool rather than assuming a menu path or repair capability applies universally.
If data checksums were never recorded, a scrub cannot compare file data with a checksum that does not exist. On Btrfs, the documented NOCOW file attribute, set with chattr +C, implicitly enables NODATASUM: metadata is still validated, but file data is not. This can matter for application data directories, so check your NAS vendor’s guidance for the workload.
Run the scrub that matches your NAS
Use the vendor-supported control when available. Scrubs can consume substantial I/O, so schedule them for a quieter period and avoid running an unsupported low-level command on valuable data.

Btrfs
Use the NAS vendor’s supported Btrfs data-scrub control, or the supported Btrfs scrub procedure for your system. The Btrfs project recommends monthly scrubbing and estimates utilization at about 80% of idle filesystem device bandwidth; that is an estimate of scrub load, not a failure rate or guarantee. On replicated block-group profiles such as RAID1, a read-write scrub can repair damage by copying verified good data from another replica. Without a good replica, it cannot invent the correct contents.
OpenZFS
Use the NAS vendor’s scrub control. If shell administration is appropriate and supported on your system, run zpool scrub pool, replacing pool with the actual pool name. After it completes, inspect zpool status -v pool. OpenZFS documentation gives monthly as a common baseline for consumer disks and quarterly for enterprise disks; follow the NAS vendor’s policy if it differs. A scrub is I/O-intensive and cannot overlap with a resilver. ZFS can repair a bad block when the pool has sufficient redundancy.
QNAP
QNAP distinguishes parity RAID scrubbing, described for RAID 5 and RAID 6, from ZFS data scrubbing on QES and QuTS hero. Its scrubbing support article, last modified July 20, 2022, recommends at least monthly in the cases it covers and suggests scheduling outside busy hours because of possible read/write impact. A parity consistency check is not identical to a filesystem checksum scrub; check the procedure for your QNAP operating system and RAID type.

Synology’s DSM 7.2 specification describes Btrfs file-system scrubbing and RAID scrubbing for RAID 5, RAID 6, and RAID F1; when a data scrub is performed, those operations run sequentially. Synology’s Knowledge Center describes additional supported pool types and checksum prerequisites. The exact controls depend on the NAS model, DSM version, and pool configuration, so use the current DSM interface and model-specific documentation.

Read the results and investigate errors
Do not treat “completed” as proof that every file is clean. Save the completion summary and check whether the task reports corrected or uncorrectable errors. Then inspect the system’s notifications and logs for affected devices, blocks, or files.
For Synology checksum-mismatch notifications, the support article last updated August 30, 2023 directs users to Log Center > Logs to find affected files. OpenZFS documents zpool status -v for listing files with unrepairable errors. It also explains that a nonzero CKSUM counter means a device returned data that did not match its checksum; cabling, a controller, or memory can be implicated. Clearing a counter does not repair damaged data.
Keep the error details before troubleshooting or restarting tasks. If the same device or files continue to show errors, investigate the cause rather than assuming a later successful run has repaired the earlier damage.
Check drive and memory health separately
If the scrub results or vendor notifications point to a hardware problem, run the NAS vendor’s supported SMART tests and, where recommended, a memory test. Synology lists defective drives and faulty memory modules among possible causes of checksum mismatch errors, and its DSM specification supports scheduled SMART tests. These checks help investigate hardware; they do not verify file contents.

Replace a drive only after diagnosis and after confirming that a replacement is compatible with the exact NAS model. A SMART warning is useful evidence, but a test result alone does not identify or restore every affected file.
Restore data that the pool cannot repair
When a checksum error is uncorrectable, restore the affected file from a known-good backup or snapshot. OpenZFS says persistent errors on a file mean it must be restored from backup or snapshot. A snapshot is useful only if it predates the corruption and contains a clean version.
Do not assume an onsite snapshot or synchronized copy is clean: Synology warns that those copies may already contain corrupted data. RAID redundancy can provide a scrub with an alternate copy, but it does not preserve a clean historical version. Keep a separate backup, preferably offsite, and verify it before relying on it.

QNAP HBS 3 documentation for version 3v21.x describes two integrity-check options. A quick check compares attributes such as file existence, size, modification time, and/or hashes; a content check uses hashes. Some job types temporarily download files during a content check. Supported job types depend on the HBS version and backup type, and checks can use significant resources; cloud downloads may incur provider fees.
Use the strongest check supported for your backup job, then confirm you can access or restore the needed files. A job reporting success is not the same as verifying that a usable, uncorrupted copy exists.
