What to Do When a USB Drive Won’t Eject Because It’s in Use

A USB drive marked “in use” is usually still being accessed by an app or document. Close likely users, retry safe eject, and escalate carefully if it remains blocked.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Finish any copy or save in progress, close files and apps using the USB drive, then try the operating system’s normal eject control again. If it still will not eject, sign out or shut down before disconnecting it. Do not pull the drive while data may still be writing.

Why a USB drive says it is in use

The message usually means an app or open document still has activity on the drive. Apple may identify the app in its alert; on Windows, an open file handle held by another program is one possible cause. The exact process varies, so close likely users rather than assuming a particular background task is responsible.

Closing the drive’s File Explorer or Finder window alone may not be enough. Close documents stored on the drive and quit the applications using them. First wait for any copy, save, or transfer to finish.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Try these steps first on any computer

  1. Let activity finish. Wait for visible transfers or saves to complete. Do not unplug the drive during an active write.
  2. Close files and applications using the drive. Save your work, close documents stored there, and quit apps that opened them.
  3. Use the normal eject control again. Select the correct USB device and wait for the operating system’s confirmation before disconnecting it.
  4. If it remains blocked, sign out and back in. Save work in other apps first, then retry ejecting.

Windows 11 and Windows 10

Eject through Safely Remove Hardware

  1. Finish transfers and close files and apps using the drive.
  2. Select the Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media icon in the taskbar notification area. If it is hidden, select the arrow to show hidden icons.
  3. Select Eject for the correct device.
  4. Wait for the “Safe To Remove Hardware” notification before unplugging. Microsoft also documents removing devices through Settings in its Windows safe-removal guidance.

Microsoft advises: “To avoid losing data, always safely remove hardware devices like USB flash drives or external hard drives before disconnecting them.”

If eject still fails after closing likely users, sign out and back in, then try again. An archived Microsoft Community response mentions checking active processes or using Disk Management, but that is dated community advice, not a universal current procedure; avoid ending processes or changing disk settings unless you know what they are doing.

Why you should not change the removal policy as a quick fix

Windows offers Quick removal and Better performance policies. Better performance can cache writes, so the safe-removal process is important to ensure pending operations finish. Changing this policy does not release a file currently in use and is not a fix for a drive that is already blocked. See Microsoft’s documentation on removal policies.

Quit apps and close documents on the disk

  1. If the alert names an app, quit it. If it does not, press Command-Tab to review open apps and quit those that may be using the disk.
  2. Close documents stored on the USB drive, then try Eject again in Finder.
  3. If it remains stuck, save work and log out, then log back in and retry.

Apple notes that a disk may not eject if one or more apps are using it. See Apple’s instructions for a disk that will not eject because an app is using it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a stubborn external disk still will not eject

Apple’s next step is to shut down the Mac, disconnect the external disk, and start the Mac again. This is an escalation step, not the routine first choice; release the apps and documents using the disk before trying it.

GNOME and other Linux desktops

In GNOME, use the file manager’s eject or safe-removal control for the external device. Open files in an application can prevent safe removal. Other Linux desktop environments may place the control elsewhere, so follow the desktop’s normal eject workflow and wait for active writes to finish before disconnecting.

When to disconnect the drive

Disconnect only after the operating system confirms safe removal or the device is no longer shown as mounted or available to eject. If the normal eject attempt remains blocked, close the likely apps and escalate through sign-out or shutdown rather than pulling the drive during a possible write.
