To check an amplifier’s audio output, set a suitable multimeter to AC volts and measure across the positive and negative output terminals of the same channel. First confirm the amplifier’s output design and instructions: bridged or floating outputs may not use chassis ground as a reference, so use only the terminal pair specified by the manufacturer. Never use a current or resistance setting for this live measurement.
Before you connect the meter
Identify the amplifier model and check its manual for output-terminal instructions. Confirm whether the outputs are bridged or floating and whether the manufacturer permits the test you plan to perform. If the terminal arrangement is unfamiliar, do not guess which terminal is ground.

- Inspect the multimeter and test leads for damage. Follow the meter’s operating instructions; Amprobe’s manual stresses following all safety and operating instructions: Amprobe meter manual.
- Put the black lead in COM and the red lead in the voltage jack—not a current jack.
- Use AC-voltage mode and a range rated for the output you expect. Check the meter manual for its AC-voltage range, accuracy, and frequency bandwidth.
- Turn the amplifier down before attaching probes. Rockford Fosgate’s output-measurement procedure instructs users to disconnect speaker wires from the amplifier output connectors before testing: Rockford Fosgate: Measuring amplifier output power.
Measure the output voltage
- With the amplifier turned down, select AC volts on the multimeter.
- Connect one probe to the positive output terminal and the other to the negative output terminal of the same channel. For a bridged or mono setup, use the manufacturer-designated bridged output pair. Do not assume either terminal is chassis ground.
- Play a steady test tone within the amplifier’s intended frequency range, keeping the signal level controlled. Rockford Fosgate gives 50 Hz as an example for a subwoofer amplifier and 1 kHz for a midrange/tweeter amplifier. Crutchfield recommends 1 kHz for regular speakers and a lower tone for subwoofer amplifiers: Crutchfield: How to set amplifier gains.
- Read the AC-voltage display. Record the tone frequency, source level, amplifier configuration, and whether a speaker load was connected; readings are comparable only when the test conditions are known.
- Turn down the signal and amplifier before removing probes or reconnecting speaker wiring.
A steady tone makes the display easier to read than changing music, but do not leave a high-level tone playing for a prolonged period.
What the reading can—and cannot—tell you
A reading shows that an AC signal is present under the conditions of that test. On its own, it does not establish rated power, prove that the output is unclipped, or confirm that a connected speaker is healthy. Output depends on the amplifier and signal level.

- Additional Tips - The following incorrect operations may cause the multimeter not to show results: Firstly, the plugs of test leads are not fully inserted or not inserted into the correct sockets. Secondly, the manual rotary switch is not placed in the correct position. In addition, this meter can not test all AC Current and below 100mV AC Voltage. Please check the user manual carefully before measurement.

Crutchfield describes speaker-level output in an automotive context as ranging from below 12 volts to nearly 30 volts in exceptional cases; these are contextual examples, not universal expected values or safety limits. Rockford Fosgate likewise notes that output varies considerably by amplifier. Do not use a generic voltage threshold to diagnose a channel or declare an output safe.
Meter suitability also matters: AC bandwidth and waveform handling can affect accuracy. The sources do not establish one accuracy standard for every meter, frequency, and waveform, so check the manual for your instrument. MTX Audio recommends a meter capable of reading at least 50 V AC for most car-audio gain-setting setups; that is category-level guidance, not a requirement for every amplifier or system: MTX Audio: Car-audio gain setting.

Choosing a multimeter for this check
Choose by capability rather than brand: verify that the meter has an AC-voltage range covering the output you expect, suitable AC accuracy and bandwidth at your test frequency, and clear, protected input jacks. True-RMS capability may matter when waveform accuracy is important. The meter’s safety ratings should also suit the environment where you will use it. No particular meter model is established as best for this task.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Using the wrong mode: DC volts measures a different property; current or resistance mode is not for measuring a live audio output.
- Using chassis ground by assumption: measure across the channel’s output pair, and follow the maker’s instructions for bridged or floating outputs.
- Testing with changing music: a steady, appropriate tone gives a more stable reading.
- Overinterpreting the number: without the test frequency, signal level, load, and amplifier configuration, the voltage alone is not a reliable pass/fail result.
