Measure the cable route from your receiver or amplifier to each speaker, total the individual runs, then add a few feet for slack and connections. For runs of 50 feet or less to standard 8-ohm speakers, Crutchfield recommends 16 AWG as a practical choice; longer runs, lower-impedance speakers, or higher-current systems may call for thicker 14 AWG wire. The right amount and type depend on your route, equipment, and installation setting.
How much speaker wire should you buy?
Measure the route each cable will actually follow rather than the straight-line distance between the receiver and speaker. A cable may need to travel around furniture, along a baseboard, or through a wall, so a direct measurement across the room can leave you short.

- Run a string from the receiver or amplifier to the first speaker, following the intended cable path, including turns.
- Measure the string and repeat for every speaker.
- Add the individual run lengths together, then include a few extra feet for slack and easier connections.
Crutchfield advises allowing extra length rather than cutting the estimate too close. Its category page gives 50- and 100-foot bulk rolls as examples of common offerings, not as a required amount for a particular room. Bulk wire can be cut to fit your measured runs; with pre-terminated cable, choose a length that reaches with slack and ends compatible with your equipment.
What gauge do you need?
Speaker wire gauge is expressed in AWG, or American Wire Gauge. The numbering runs opposite to thickness: a lower AWG number means thicker wire. Thicker wire has lower resistance, which can be useful on longer runs or with speakers and amplifiers that place greater demands on the cable.

| Your setup | Practical starting point |
|---|---|
| Run of 50 feet or less to standard 8-ohm speakers | Crutchfield recommends 16 AWG as sufficient for this case. |
| Home-theater run longer than 50 feet | Consider 14 AWG, according to Crutchfield. |
| High-current amplifier or 4- or 6-ohm speakers | Consider thicker wire; Crutchfield identifies 14 AWG as a good choice for these cases. |
| Longer or higher-demand run | Thicker wire has less resistance. Check the equipment maker’s requirements for the specific system. |
These are retailer recommendations, not universal engineering limits. They do not establish a maximum length that applies to every amplifier, speaker load, and cable. Check your equipment instructions when the run is long or the system has a demanding load.

- SIMPLE INSTALL: White line on one side of wire indicates the polarity for a proper audio system set up
- EASY DISPENSING: Comes wrapped around a hard plastic spool for simple dispensing
Does the installation location change the wire?
Inside a wall
For in-wall runs, Crutchfield recommends UL-rated speaker wire labeled CL2 or CL3. It describes both 2-conductor and 4-conductor constructions; a typical stereo pair usually uses a 2-conductor cable for each speaker. Follow applicable building requirements and equipment instructions for your installation.
Underground outdoors
Use speaker cable rated for direct burial for an underground outdoor run. Ordinary indoor cable is not a substitute for cable rated for that use.

Should you use bare wire or connectors?
Optional connectors can make hooking up or disconnecting a system more convenient, but they must match the terminals. Banana plugs work with compatible binding posts. Spring clips accept bare wire or pin connectors, not banana plugs. Check the receiver and speaker terminals before buying pre-terminated cable or separate connectors.
