Yes—12 AWG copper wire can carry a speaker signal. But gauge alone does not tell you whether a particular electrical wire is a good fit: check its material, solid or stranded construction, terminal compatibility, and cable rating for the installation. For a concealed wall or ceiling run, use cable marked for the applicable installation rather than assuming any 12-gauge house wire is suitable.
What 12 AWG tells you—and what it does not
12 AWG identifies the conductor size. It does not establish that the conductor is copper, that the cable is stranded, or that its jacket is rated for concealed speaker wiring or another specific location. Those details depend on the actual cable and its listing.

Manufacturer specifications show that purpose-built 12 AWG speaker cable is available in stranded copper. Southwire specifies a two-conductor, stranded bare-copper 12 AWG cable, while Prysmian lists 12 AWG stranded bare copper for its Command home-entertainment speaker cable. For a short, exposed connection, 12 AWG copper can carry the signal if it fits the amplifier and speaker terminals and can be terminated securely. Purpose-built stranded speaker cable is generally easier to route and handle than typical solid building wire. Keep the two conductors connected consistently: amplifier positive to speaker positive, and negative to negative.

For a long run, 12 AWG is a plausible choice, but gauge alone does not set a reliable maximum distance. Cable material, actual length, speaker impedance, and system requirements all affect the impact of cable resistance. Southwire publishes a DC resistance of 1.774 Ω per 1,000 ft at 25°C for its specified 12 AWG, two-conductor Soundsational cable. That is a product-specific value, not a universal rating for all 12 AWG wire. Southwire specification.
Can 12 AWG wire go inside a wall for speakers?
Only if the particular cable has a rating appropriate to the concealed installation and meets applicable local requirements. The cited Southwire cable is specified as CL3 and includes permitted installation conditions; Prysmian’s product sheet identifies applicable CL3 compliance and in-wall speaker applications. Those ratings apply to the named products, not to all 12 AWG wire.

Before installing cable in a wall or ceiling:
- Read the jacket markings and verify the cable’s listing and installation instructions.
- Confirm the rating is suitable for the location and follow local requirements.
- Do not treat “12 AWG” or “electrical wire” as proof of an in-wall rating.
What to look for in a 12-gauge speaker cable
For ordinary speaker connections, compare the actual cable’s conductor material, stranded or solid construction, two-conductor arrangement, and polarity markings. For concealed runs, also verify the cable rating against the installation location. If the manufacturer publishes resistance, treat it as a specification for that product and configuration—not a generic property of every cable with the same gauge.
This is general guidance based on manufacturer specifications, not a test of a particular amplifier and speaker combination or an inspection of a specific cable. Check equipment terminals and the cable’s markings before use.
