Yes—you can run WordPress and Ghost on one VPS safely. Use one public Nginx reverse proxy for ports 80 and 443, give each application its own hostname, and keep Ghost, PHP-FPM, and both databases on private listeners or internal Docker networks. A typical layout uses example.com for WordPress and news.example.com for Ghost. Nginx terminates HTTPS and sends each request to the correct application.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
What the shared-VPS architecture looks like
WordPress and Ghost use different application stacks, but they do not need separate servers. WordPress is a PHP application normally delivered by Nginx through PHP-FPM. Ghost is a Node.js application that normally listens on 127.0.0.1:2368. The two sites can share the VPS kernel and the edge web server while remaining separate at the process, filesystem, database, and network layers.

| Public ports | Only the shared Nginx service should bind host ports 80 and 443 | |
This arrangement prevents the most common collision: two separate web servers trying to claim the same public port. Ghost should not run its own public Caddy or Nginx listener when another Nginx instance is already the edge proxy.
Prerequisites and sizing
Start with a supported Linux VPS. Ghost documents Ubuntu 24, Node.js 22 LTS, MySQL 8.0, Nginx, Systemd, and at least 1 GB of memory for a self-hosted installation. WordPress recommends PHP 8.3 or newer, MariaDB 10.11 or newer or MySQL 8.0 or newer, HTTPS, and Nginx or Apache.

The 1 GB figure is Ghost’s documented minimum, not a guarantee that a busy two-site server will perform well. WordPress plugins, image processing, traffic spikes, database caches, backups, and operating-system services all consume memory. Leave headroom for both applications and monitor memory, swap activity, CPU load, and disk space. If the server begins swapping during imports or updates, move to a larger VPS before the sites become unreliable.
- A supported Ubuntu release with administrative SSH access.
- A static public IPv4 address, and IPv6 if you intend to publish it.
- Two DNS names, or one domain plus a subdomain, pointed at the VPS.
- Administrative access to create databases and system services.
- Enough storage for WordPress uploads, Ghost content, databases, logs, and backup copies.
- A backup destination outside the VPS.
Choose hostnames and configure DNS first
Assign one canonical hostname to each site. For example, use example.com for WordPress and news.example.com for Ghost. Create an A record for each name pointing to the VPS address; add matching AAAA records only when IPv6 is correctly configured and firewalled.
Ghost supports one canonical domain per installation. Set Ghost’s canonical URL to the HTTPS form of its chosen hostname and redirect any alternate names to it. Do the same for WordPress so that HTTP, a www variant, and accidental alternate hostnames do not create duplicate URLs or cookie problems.
DNS changes can take time to propagate. Before requesting certificates, verify that both names resolve to the VPS from more than one network and that no old server still answers for either name.
Install the shared operating-system services
Install Nginx and the runtimes
Install one Nginx service on the host, then install PHP-FPM for the WordPress version you selected. Install Node.js 22 LTS, MySQL 8.0 for Ghost, and MariaDB 10.11 or MySQL 8.0 for WordPress. You may use one MySQL server process for both applications, but create separate databases and users. Never point both applications at the same schema.
Ghost is managed as a Systemd service when installed with Ghost-CLI. WordPress does not require a long-running application process beyond PHP-FPM and the database service. Keep package versions within the support ranges documented by the applications.

Create separate Unix ownership and directories
Place WordPress files in a directory such as /var/www/wordpress and Ghost in its own directory such as /var/www/ghost. Restrict write permission to the directories that actually need it. WordPress uploads must be writable by the PHP-FPM user; Ghost content and its configuration must be writable only by the Ghost service account and administrators.
Separate directories make it easier to audit permissions, back up each site independently, and remove one application without touching the other. They also prevent a compromised plugin or theme from directly reading Ghost’s configuration or database credentials.
Install and configure WordPress
- Create a dedicated WordPress database and database user with a strong, unique password. Grant that user privileges only on the WordPress database.
- Install WordPress files in the WordPress document root and set ownership so Nginx can read them and PHP-FPM can write only where required, especially the uploads directory.
- Configure the WordPress database connection in
wp-config.php. Use the database server’s private address, normally a local socket or127.0.0.1, rather than a public address. - Set the WordPress address and site address to the final HTTPS hostname. If you temporarily install over HTTP, change both values after the certificate is active and test redirects carefully.
- Complete the browser-based installer through the WordPress hostname, not through an IP address. This ensures generated links and cookies use the canonical domain.
WordPress requests should be handled by an Nginx server block that serves static files directly and sends PHP files to the matching PHP-FPM socket. The socket name varies with the installed PHP package, so verify it on the server instead of copying a version number blindly.
Install and configure Ghost
- Install Node.js 22 LTS, MySQL 8.0, Nginx, and Systemd components required by Ghost’s documented stack.
- Create a separate MySQL database and user for Ghost. Do not reuse the WordPress database user.
- Install Ghost in its own directory using Ghost-CLI or the official Docker image. Configure the installation with the final HTTPS URL, for example
https://news.example.com. - Keep Ghost listening on its private default endpoint,
127.0.0.1:2368, unless you deliberately choose another internal port. - Start the Ghost service and verify locally that it returns a response before putting it behind the proxy.
Ghost is designed to have a reverse proxy in front of it. The proxy is responsible for public HTTP and HTTPS, while Ghost handles application requests on the private listener. An incorrect scheme header can make Ghost redirect HTTPS requests back to HTTPS indefinitely, so proxy headers must be explicit.
Configure Nginx for both sites
Create one server block for WordPress and another for Ghost. The examples below show the routing model; adjust paths, PHP-FPM socket names, certificate paths, and security settings to your distribution.
WordPress server block
server {
listen 80;
server_name example.com www.example.com;
root /var/www/wordpress;
index index.php index.html;
location / {
try_files $uri $uri/ /index.php?$args;
}
location ~ .php$ {
include snippets/fastcgi-php.conf;
fastcgi_pass unix:/run/php/php8.3-fpm.sock;
}
}
In production, the HTTP block should redirect to the HTTPS hostname after certificates are installed. Keep the www name only if you intend to serve it; otherwise redirect it to the canonical form.

proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-For $proxy_add_x_forwarded_for;
proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-Proto $scheme;
proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1:2368;
}
}
For the TLS server block, keep the same proxy headers and proxy target, listen on 443 with the certificate and private key, and redirect the HTTP block to HTTPS. The X-Forwarded-Proto value must reflect the original client scheme. When TLS terminates at Nginx, it should be https for the upstream request.
After editing configuration, run nginx -t and reload Nginx only if the test succeeds. Confirm that the WordPress hostname reaches the PHP application and the Ghost hostname reaches port 2368. A request to the VPS IP alone should not be treated as a valid site hostname.
Terminate HTTPS at the edge
Obtain certificates for each public hostname at the Nginx edge and redirect all HTTP requests to HTTPS. Ghost recommends SSL in production, and Ghost-CLI can create a Let’s Encrypt certificate and Nginx SSL configuration. If you use another ACME client, ensure it can renew certificates automatically and reload Nginx after renewal.
Do not expose Ghost’s port 2368 or PHP-FPM to the Internet. Clients should connect only to ports 80 and 443, while Nginx communicates with local upstreams. Test renewal before the first certificate expires and verify that both hostnames continue to serve the expected certificate after a reload.
Firewall and private-network rules
Allow SSH, HTTP, and HTTPS through the VPS firewall. Ghost’s deployment guidance specifically recommends UFW rules for those services. Restrict SSH to trusted source addresses where practical, use key authentication, and disable password login only after confirming key-based access.
Keep MySQL and MariaDB bound to localhost or an internal network. PHP-FPM should listen on a local Unix socket or private address. Ghost’s 2368 listener should bind to localhost when using a host installation. Remove any public firewall rule for database ports, 2368, or PHP-FPM.

Check the effective rules after enabling the firewall so you do not lock yourself out. If Docker is involved, remember that published container ports can bypass assumptions made about host firewall rules; publish only the ports that the shared edge proxy actually needs.
Docker layout: avoid port 80 and 443 conflicts
Docker is useful when you want repeatable versions, isolated dependencies, and easier rollback. Put WordPress, Ghost, their databases, and the reverse proxy on controlled Docker networks. Publish host ports 80 and 443 from exactly one proxy container. Keep application and database containers unexposed, or publish them only to an internal network.
For Ghost, the official Docker guidance requires MySQL 8, HTTPS, and a correctly configured reverse proxy. If Ghost runs in a container, the proxy can send traffic to the Ghost service name on the internal Docker network rather than to 127.0.0.1. Do not publish Ghost’s container port to host port 80 or 443, because that would compete with the shared proxy.

| Decision | Direct host installation | Docker installation |
|---|---|---|
| Port ownership | Nginx on the host owns 80 and 443; Ghost stays on localhost:2368 | One proxy container publishes 80 and 443; app ports remain internal |

Back up WordPress and Ghost as separate systems. A usable backup must include both application files and the corresponding database, with credentials and encryption handled securely.
Best Value
Ghost backup
Ghost-CLI’s ghost backup creates a zip of Ghost site data. Store the resulting archive outside the VPS and verify that it is readable. A file archive alone is not a substitute for a tested database recovery plan if your deployment stores content or configuration in MySQL.
Recommended Free Tools
WordPress backup
Capture the WordPress database and the complete site files, including wp-content, uploaded media, themes, plugins, and configuration. Keep database and file backups from a compatible point in time so a restore does not produce mismatched content.
Test restoration
Perform a restore drill for each site on an isolated temporary host or network. Restore the database, files, permissions, canonical URL settings, and Nginx configuration. Confirm that media, administrator login, scheduled tasks, redirects, and HTTPS all work before considering the backup reliable.
Updates and day-to-day operations
- Update the operating system and Nginx regularly, then reload Nginx after validating configuration.
- Keep PHP within WordPress’s supported range and test plugins after PHP upgrades.
- Apply Ghost, Node.js, and MySQL updates using a maintenance window and a current backup.
- Update WordPress core, themes, and plugins individually when possible so a failing component is identifiable.
- Monitor disk usage because media libraries, image derivatives, logs, Docker layers, and backup archives grow independently.
- Review Nginx access and error logs for repeated upstream failures, suspicious requests, and certificate or redirect problems.
- Use a staging copy for major theme, plugin, Ghost, or database changes before applying them to production.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | Checks and fix |
|---|---|---|
| Ghost continually redirects to HTTPS | The proxy sends the wrong scheme header | Set X-Forwarded-Proto $scheme at Nginx; when TLS terminates at the proxy, confirm the upstream receives https. |
| 502 Bad Gateway for Ghost | Ghost is stopped, listening elsewhere, or unreachable from Nginx | Check the Ghost service status, verify the configured port, test the local endpoint, and confirm Nginx can reach it. |
| Port already allocated | A second proxy or Docker container owns host port 80 or 443 | List listeners and container port mappings; leave only the shared edge proxy published on those ports. |
| WordPress shows a 404 for normal pages | Permalink requests are not falling back to index.php |
Check the WordPress try_files rule and reload Nginx after a successful configuration test. |
| Large upload fails | Nginx request-size limit is too low | Raise client_max_body_size for the affected server block and ensure PHP or Ghost limits are compatible. Ghost’s proxy documentation calls out this setting for large uploads. |
| The wrong site appears | DNS, server_name, Host header, or canonical URL is wrong |
Verify DNS answers, inspect both server blocks, test each hostname with its Host header, and correct the application’s canonical URL. |
| Database appears on the Internet | MySQL or MariaDB is bound publicly or allowed through the firewall | Bind the database to localhost or an internal network and remove public firewall access. |
| Uploads or updates fail with permission errors | Files are owned by the wrong user or directory permissions are too restrictive | Review PHP-FPM and Ghost service ownership, grant write access only to required directories, and avoid making the entire document root world-writable. |
When a managed Ghost service is a better fit
Self-hosting gives you control over the VPS, Nginx configuration, databases, filesystem, and deployment process. It also makes you responsible for operating-system patches, capacity planning, backups, certificates, monitoring, and incident recovery.
Ghost identifies Ghost(Pro) as its official managed platform. A managed service can remove much of the server maintenance, while a self-hosted installation remains available on almost any VPS provider. Compare operational responsibility, control, maintenance effort, and recurring service cost before choosing. WordPress can still remain on your VPS, but the proxy and DNS design changes if Ghost is moved to a separate managed endpoint.
