To host a Vault Hunters 2nd Edition server, download the separate official Second Edition server package for Minecraft 1.16.5 Forge, extract it into a dedicated folder, run the supplied setup helper, accept the Minecraft EULA, and start the generated server script. Plan memory at roughly 4 GB plus 2 GB for each player who will be online at the same time, then configure your firewall and router so friends can connect.
Running a modpack with friends? Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks (CurseForge, FTB, Technic) and free DDoS protection.
The important distinction is the edition. Second Edition is not installed by copying a client profile, and the Java requirement for Third Edition does not automatically apply. The procedure below keeps the server files, world, networking, memory, and backups organized so a private group can play without risking the live world.

Vault Hunters 2nd Edition is the Minecraft 1.16.5 Forge line. CurseForge lists it as the “Vault Hunters Official Modpack (Second Edition)” and provides a distinct server download. You need that server archive, not an unrelated client instance.
- A 64-bit computer or virtual machine with enough free memory for Java, Forge, the world, the operating system, and any other applications running on the host.
- Free disk space for the extracted files, generated chunks, logs, and several backups. The world can grow substantially as players explore.
- A stable network connection with sufficient upload capacity if people will join from outside your home.
- Permission to open the host firewall and, for a home connection, the router’s port-forwarding settings.
- The matching Vault Hunters client installation for every player. Client and server files should remain on the same Second Edition release line.
Choose the host before downloading. A dedicated computer is easiest to leave online. A home PC costs nothing beyond your existing hardware but must stay powered on and reachable. A rented virtual machine or managed Minecraft service can provide a public endpoint, but you must confirm that it supports the exact 1.16.5 Forge pack and gives you enough memory.

Download the correct Second Edition server files
Identify the edition and release line
On the CurseForge page for the Vault Hunters Official Modpack (Second Edition), select the file explicitly labeled as the server package. The Second Edition listing is the 1.16.5 Forge release line; its server release appears in the files index dated January 11, 2022. Do not download a client profile and try to turn it into a server by copying folders. Client and server installations contain different launch files and configuration expectations.
Keep the server separate from your client
Create a new folder used only by the server, such as a folder named for the edition and release. Do not put it inside the CurseForge client instance. A separate location makes it easier to identify the active world, replace a failed update, copy backups, and avoid accidentally editing client-only files.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteKeep the original archive until the server has started successfully. Record the file name or release identifier in a text note beside the server folder. That record lets you match future client updates and restore the exact package used to create a backup.
Install the pack with the supplied setup files
The supplied files and scripts are the supported starting point. VH-ServerHelper documents placing vh-setup.bat beside the extracted server files. The helper installs the required components and creates the launch scripts used after setup.
- Extract the archive. Unpack the official server download into the new, empty server folder. Avoid nesting the contents inside several additional folders; the setup script should sit beside the extracted files it needs.
- Place the helper. If you are using VH-ServerHelper on Windows, copy
vh-setup.batinto that same folder. It must be alongside the extracted server files, not in your downloads folder or the client profile. - Run setup once. Launch
vh-setup.batand allow it to finish. The helper documentation says it installs requirements and createsrun.batandrun.shfor later starts. - Keep both launch scripts. Use
run.baton Windows. Userun.shon a Unix-like host, following that host’s normal method for running shell scripts. Do not repeatedly run the setup helper as your normal start command. - Check the generated folder. Before starting the world, verify that the generated scripts and the server files are in the same directory. If a script opens and closes immediately, start it from a terminal in the server folder so that its error message remains visible.
The helper is a convenience layer around the supplied server files; it does not change the need to use the correct Second Edition package. If you install manually instead, follow the launch instructions included with that exact archive rather than substituting instructions from Third Edition.

Complete the first launch and EULA
Accept the EULA deliberately
Start the generated script once. Minecraft will create initial files and may stop while waiting for its EULA agreement. Read the EULA and set eula=true only if you agree to it. Do not copy an EULA file from another server or assume that accepting it for a client applies to this installation.
Generate the world before editing settings
Start the server again after accepting the EULA and wait for the console to finish generating the world. Initial generation can take longer than later starts because Forge and the modpack are creating configuration and world data. When the console indicates that startup is complete, stop the server cleanly from its console rather than closing the window.
That first run creates server.properties and the world directory. Edit configuration only after this generation step, when the files exist. Make one change at a time, restart cleanly, and keep a copy of the previous file so an invalid setting can be reversed.
Choose memory for your concurrent player count
The official Vault Hunters FAQ gives two separate planning figures. It recommends at least 8,192 MB for the client. For a server, its rule of thumb is “4GB plus 2GB for every player who will be online at the same time.” This is publisher guidance, not an independent performance benchmark or a guarantee for every world, mod combination, or hardware configuration.
| Players online at once | Calculation | Approximate server memory baseline |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 4 GB + (2 GB × 1) | 6 GB |
| 2 | 4 GB + (2 GB × 2) | 8 GB |
| 3 | 4 GB + (2 GB × 3) | 10 GB |
| 4 | 4 GB + (2 GB × 4) | 12 GB |
| 5 | 4 GB + (2 GB × 5) | 14 GB |
| 6 | 4 GB + (2 GB × 6) | 16 GB |
For example, a three-player server starts around 10 GB under that formula. Reserve additional memory for the operating system, backups, monitoring, and any other applications. If the same computer runs a Vault Hunters client, its client allocation is separate from the server’s Java process; the host must have room for both. Do not assign every available gigabyte to Java, because the operating system and Forge need headroom.

Start with the smallest allocation that meets the player-count guidance and observe the console and system memory use during exploration. Increasing the allocation cannot compensate for an incorrect pack, a saturated upload connection, or a machine that is already swapping. Conversely, a server that runs out of memory during world generation needs more available RAM or fewer simultaneous workloads.
Verify Java for the exact Second Edition build
Do not infer the Java version from current Vault Hunters guides. The official wiki’s Java 17 requirement applies to Third Edition, which is the Minecraft 1.18.2 line. The available Second Edition pages do not publish a definitive Java version for every server archive.
Before launching, read the instructions bundled with the selected Second Edition server archive or the helper documentation. If you need to inspect the Java installation on the host, run java -version in a terminal and compare the result with those instructions. Install the version required by that exact build; do not switch to Java 17 solely because a Third Edition page mentions it.
A Java mismatch commonly appears as an immediate script exit, an unsupported class-version message, or Forge failing before the server console reaches world loading. Capture the complete error, verify the archive’s requirement, and correct the Java installation or the script’s Java path before changing world files.

Configure the server for your group
Edit basic properties after the first generation
With the server stopped, open server.properties in a plain-text editor. Set only the options your group needs, save the file, and restart through the generated script. The file controls the listening port, player access, and other server behavior; the exact labels and defaults in your package are authoritative.

For a private world, enable the whitelist and add each player’s Minecraft account through the server console or the administrative method documented by the pack. A whitelist prevents an accidentally exposed address from becoming an open invitation. Keep administrative credentials and console access private.
Allow the process through the host firewall
The operating system may block incoming connections even when the server itself is running. Create an inbound firewall rule for the Java or Forge server process, or for the listening port configured in server.properties. Exact screens differ between Windows, Linux distributions, and other Unix-like systems, so use the host’s firewall interface and restrict the rule to the needed network scope where practical.
Forward the port for a home server
Players on the same local network can normally connect using the server computer’s private address. Friends outside the home need the router to forward the configured Minecraft listening port to the server’s private IP address. Give the server a stable private address first, using a DHCP reservation or a static assignment supported by your network, so the forwarding rule does not point to a different device after a reboot.
After saving the router rule, test from outside your home network. A phone using cellular data or a friend in another location can verify whether the endpoint is reachable. Testing only from inside the same LAN can produce a false success because some routers do not support loopback connections.
Share the public address and port only with intended players. Never publish it together with panel passwords, console credentials, remote-desktop details, or backup locations. If your internet provider changes your public address, tell players the new endpoint or use a separate dynamic-DNS arrangement that you control.

Back up, update, and recover safely
Make consistent world backups
- Tell players to stop changing the world and stop the server cleanly from the console.
- Copy the entire world directory, not just a single region or configuration file, to a dated backup location.
- Keep at least one backup on a different physical or cloud location from the live machine.
- Record the exact server-pack file and any configuration changes beside the backup.
- Periodically test a copy by starting it in a separate folder. A backup that has never been restored is only an assumption.
Do not copy a live world while players are changing chunks. Files can be mid-write, producing a backup that appears complete but cannot restore correctly.
Update client and server together
When a new Second Edition file is released, stop the server and make a full backup before replacing anything. Record the old release, install the new files in a separate test folder, and start it against a copied world. Have every player update to the same client release before switching the production server.
Never test an upgrade first on the only copy of your world. If the test fails, retain the original folder and its backup, investigate the console error, and roll back by restoring the previous server files and world.
Troubleshoot the most common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The setup script cannot find files | The helper is in a different folder from the extracted archive, or the archive was nested one level too deep. | Place vh-setup.bat beside the extracted files and confirm the generated scripts appear in that same folder. |
| The launch window closes immediately | Java is missing, the Java version does not match the Second Edition build, or the script encountered an early error. | Run the script from a terminal, capture the message, run java -version, and compare it with the archive instructions. |
| The server stops at the EULA stage | The EULA file has not been accepted. | Read the EULA and set eula=true only if you agree, then start again. |
| Friends cannot connect, but you can | The host firewall or router is blocking the inbound connection, or friends are using the private address. | Allow the Java/Forge process, verify the forwarding rule targets the server’s current private IP, and give remote players the public endpoint. |
| LAN players connect but remote players time out | NAT forwarding, public-address changes, or an internet-provider restriction. | Test from outside the LAN, recheck the router rule and public address, and confirm the configured listening port. |
| Players are kicked during exploration | The machine is short on memory, CPU, disk performance, or upload capacity. | Compare concurrent players with the official memory baseline, leave operating-system headroom, check system utilization, and reduce other workloads. |
| An update will not load the existing world | Client and server releases differ, or the update was applied directly to the production folder. | Restore the backup, match the client and server release, and test the update on a copied world first. |
Self-hosting versus a managed Minecraft service
| Consideration | Self-hosted Second Edition | Managed Minecraft or Forge host |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Official community guidance describes setting up your own server with the supplied files as free, apart from your existing hardware and internet service. | A recurring monthly fee; confirm that the plan supports the exact 1.16.5 Forge pack and provides the memory you need. |
| Control | Full control over files, launch scripts, Java selection, backups, access rules, and testing folders. | The provider controls the panel, base image, and some maintenance details. |
| Networking | You configure the firewall, NAT, public address, and uptime. | The provider normally supplies a public endpoint and a control panel, reducing home-network setup. |
| Capacity | Limited by your machine, storage, and upload connection. | You choose a plan by advertised RAM and CPU; verify actual limits and whether resources are shared. |
| Maintenance | You perform updates, backups, restores, and troubleshooting. | Some plans include automated installs or backups, but check what is included and whether you can download your own copies. |
Use the official player-count memory guidance when comparing either option. A hosting panel does not remove the need to match the exact modpack release, keep independent backups, or test updates safely.
Pre-launch checklist
- The downloaded archive is the official Vault Hunters Official Modpack (Second Edition) server package for the 1.16.5 Forge line.
- The archive is extracted into a dedicated server folder outside the client installation.
vh-setup.batwas placed beside the extracted files when using VH-ServerHelper.run.batorrun.shwas generated and starts the server from the correct folder.- The EULA was read and accepted before setting
eula=true. - The first world generation completed, and the server was stopped cleanly before editing properties.
- Memory follows the 4 GB plus 2 GB per concurrent-player planning rule, with extra host headroom.
- The Java version was verified against the exact Second Edition archive instructions, not a Third Edition guide.
- The host firewall allows the server process or configured listening port.
- A home router forwards that port to a stable private IP when remote friends need access.
- A whitelist is enabled for a private group, and administrative credentials remain private.
- A dated backup exists away from the live machine, and the release identifier is recorded.
- Any update has been tested against a copied world before production replacement.
The practical answer
A reliable VH2 server is built from the matching official server package, not from a modified client profile. Keep the files isolated, let the supplied helper generate the launch scripts, verify Java against the Second Edition archive, and size memory for the number of people actually online. Once the first world is generated, networking and maintenance become the ongoing work: firewall and router rules make the service reachable, while whitelisting, clean shutdowns, and tested backups protect the world.
