Choose the least disruptive recovery that matches the symptom. If Windows still starts, try removing a recent update or using System Restore. Use Reset this PC when Windows is unstable and ordinary repairs have not helped; Keep my files (Microsoft’s current name for the old “Refresh” path) preserves personal files but removes apps and settings. If Windows will not start, use Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE), Startup Repair, System Restore, Uninstall Updates, or Reset this PC. Recovery media or a clean installation is the last resort.
Important lifecycle context: Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Recovery can restore a malfunctioning installation, but it does not return Windows 10 to supported status or bring back free security updates, technical assistance, or Windows Update software updates.

Which Windows 10 recovery option should you choose?
Windows recovery is a ladder of increasing disruption. Start at the top and move down only when the symptom or a failed attempt requires it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Option | When Windows starts | Personal files | Apps and settings | What you need | Disruption |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Uninstall a recent update or run a relevant troubleshooter | Yes | Remain | Generally unchanged | Windows access | Low |
| System Restore | Usually; also available in Windows RE | Remain | System changes roll back to a restore point | An available restore point | Low to medium |
| Startup Repair | No; designed for startup failures | Designed to leave personal files in place | Repairs startup components | Windows RE | Low to medium |
| Reset this PC — Keep my files (Refresh) | Yes, or through Windows RE | Remain | Apps and settings are removed | Power, time, and an installation source | Medium to high |
| Reset this PC — Remove everything | Yes, or through Windows RE | Removed | Removed | Backup first; power and time | High |
| Recovery drive or installation media | Useful when Windows will not start or built-in tools fail | Depends on the selected recovery route | Depends on the selected recovery route | USB media; another working PC may be needed | Medium to high |
| Clean installation from installation media | Not required | Removed from the selected installation target | Removed unless an in-place choice is selected | Backup and carefully prepared media | Highest |
Microsoft describes Keep my files as “Also known as Refresh” and Remove everything as “Also known as Reset.” The names can vary slightly between Windows builds, so follow the wording shown on your screen.

Prepare safely before refreshing, resetting, or reinstalling
Back up files separately
Copy documents, photos, browser exports, password-vault data, project folders, and any other irreplaceable files to a separate destination before starting. A recovery drive is not a personal-file backup. If the computer still works, verify that the backup opens on another device or in another location.
Find your BitLocker recovery key
Encrypted devices can request the BitLocker recovery key when you enter Windows RE or change the boot configuration. Locate the key before you begin. If you cannot provide it when prompted, recovery may stop even though the files are intact on the encrypted drive.
Use an empty USB drive for media creation
Microsoft’s bootable installation-media instructions specify a USB flash drive of at least 8 GB. Creating a recovery drive erases data already on that USB, so use an empty drive. The USB is a way to carry recovery or installation files; it is not, by itself, a repair device. If your own PC cannot boot, prepare the media on another working Windows PC.

A successful reset leaves you with a functioning Windows 10 installation, not a supported one. If the hardware supports it, Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11. If you must remain on Windows 10, treat the repaired system as an unsupported operating system and plan your security and replacement strategy accordingly.
How do I refresh Windows 10 without losing files?
Use Reset this PC > Keep my files. This reinstalls Windows while keeping personal files, but it removes installed desktop apps, manufacturer apps that were added after setup, and customized settings. Export application data and record license information first.
- Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Recovery.
- Under Reset this PC, select Get started.
- Choose Keep my files (the Refresh path).
- Select an installation source: Cloud download or Local reinstall.
- Review the list of apps and settings that will be removed, then confirm the reset.
- Leave the computer connected to power. The screen may go black for a long period, occasionally more than 15 minutes, and the PC may restart several times. Do not press the power button or otherwise interrupt the process.
After setup, reinstall the applications you need, restore backed-up data, and reapply settings. If the reset fails repeatedly with Local reinstall, try Cloud download; if the internet connection is unreliable, Local reinstall may be more practical.
What is the difference between Refresh and Reset?
Keep my files (Refresh)
Keep my files reinstalls Windows but keeps personal files in your user folders. It is appropriate when the operating system is damaged or badly configured and you can tolerate reinstalling applications. It is not an image restore: programs, drivers, and settings are not preserved automatically.
Remove everything (Reset)
Remove everything reinstalls Windows and deletes personal files, apps, and settings. Choose it for a genuinely fresh start, severe software problems after a verified backup, or when preparing the PC for transfer to another person.
Windows may offer an option to clean the drive when you choose Remove everything. Microsoft says this consumer feature is not a government- or industry-standard secure erase. Do not treat it as a standards-grade method for sanitizing highly sensitive data; use an appropriate data-destruction process when that requirement applies.
Cloud download versus Local reinstall
| Choice | Source of Windows files | When it helps | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cloud download | A fresh Windows copy downloaded during reset | Local recovery files are corrupted or missing | Needs a reliable internet connection and download time |
| Local reinstall | Recovery files already on the PC | Connectivity is limited or the download would be impractical | May be faster on a slow connection, but local files could themselves be damaged and may not include the latest updates |
How do I restore Windows 10 with System Restore?
System Restore rolls system files, drivers, registry settings, and installed-program changes back to a selected restore point. It does not delete personal documents, photos, or other personal files. It is most useful when a problem began after a driver, application, or system change and a suitable restore point exists.
- Save your work and close open applications.
- Open the Windows recovery tools and choose System Restore. In a running Windows session, you can open the recovery controls from the Control Panel’s recovery area; if Windows will not start, select System Restore from Windows RE.
- Choose a restore point dated before the problem began. Use the option to scan for affected programs when it is offered.
- Confirm the point and allow Windows to restart. Do not interrupt the rollback.
If no restore point is available, System Restore cannot create a past state retroactively. Move to Uninstall Updates, Startup Repair, Reset this PC, or installation media according to the symptom.

What if my PC will not start?
Enter Windows Recovery Environment
Windows RE may open automatically after repeated failed starts. If you can reach the sign-in screen, hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart. From a running session, use Start > Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now. The exact labels can vary by build.
Try the least destructive Windows RE tools
- Choose Troubleshoot.
- Run Startup Repair for a boot-loader or startup configuration problem.
- Use Uninstall Updates if the failure began immediately after a quality or feature update.
- Use System Restore if a suitable restore point exists.
- Select Reset this PC only when those options do not solve the problem. Choose Keep my files or Remove everything deliberately.
Windows RE can ask for the BitLocker recovery key. Enter it rather than repeatedly powering off the machine.
When should I use a recovery drive or installation media?
Use external media when Windows RE is missing, built-in recovery fails, or the internal recovery files are damaged. A manufacturer recovery image may include model-specific drivers and factory applications that generic Microsoft media does not.
Create a recovery drive
- On a working Windows PC, connect an empty USB drive with at least 8 GB.
- Open the recovery-drive creation tool and follow its prompts to copy recovery files.
- Because the process erases the selected USB, confirm that the drive contains nothing you need.
- Connect the drive to the affected PC, boot from USB using the computer’s boot-menu key, and select the recovery tools.
The recovery drive contains Windows recovery tools, not your personal files. Keep your separate backup available.
Create and use installation media
Microsoft’s installation-media process normally uses an 8 GB-or-larger USB drive or a DVD. Prepare it on another working PC if necessary. Boot the affected computer from the media and choose the repair options first. If you start Windows setup from within a functioning Windows session, the in-place reinstall flow can offer three choices: keep personal files and apps, keep personal files only, or keep nothing. Do not confuse that in-place route with booting from USB to perform a clean installation.
Clean installation as the final step
A clean installation deletes the selected installation target. Confirm the disk and partition carefully, and make sure your backup is complete before deleting anything. You may need to reinstall applications and obtain hardware drivers afterward. Use this route only when less destructive recovery has failed or when you intentionally want a blank Windows installation.
Common recovery problems and the safe response
The reset appears stuck on a black screen
Microsoft warns that a black screen can last a long time, occasionally upwards of 15 minutes, and that automatic restarts are normal. Keep the PC connected to power and wait. Manually interrupting the reset can cause it to fail.
Reset fails before completion
Retry from Windows RE if the normal Settings route fails. Switch between Local reinstall and Cloud download based on whether the local recovery files or the network is the likely weakness. If both fail, use installation media or a manufacturer recovery image.

There is no BitLocker key available
Stop before destructive recovery and search your Microsoft account, organization’s management records, or the backup location where the key was stored. Without the key, encrypted data may remain inaccessible.
The PC has no usable recovery partition
Use installation media created on another working PC. A manufacturer’s media can be preferable when you need the original model-specific drivers and factory software.
Quick Recap
A practical decision sequence
- Recent change: uninstall the recent update or use System Restore.
- Windows starts but remains unstable: try Keep my files, choosing Cloud download when local files may be damaged.
- Windows cannot start: enter Windows RE and try Startup Repair, Uninstall Updates, or System Restore.
- Built-in tools fail: use a recovery drive or installation media.
- Nothing else works, or you need a blank system: back up again and perform Remove everything or a clean installation.
