Decide what you mean by “reset”
A Satisfactory server reset can mean several different operations. Choosing the wrong one can delete more progress than intended or unexpectedly remove your server password and certificate. Match the action to the result you want before changing anything.

If you simply want to start a different world, uploading and selecting that world in Server Manager is safer than deleting files. If you need to remove one save or an entire session, use the corresponding API operation. Use manual deletion when you deliberately need to clean the host directory or when the management UI and API are unavailable.
Back up the save before maintenance
A reset is destructive unless you have an independent copy. The official Satisfactory support guidance recommends copying saves to another location regularly, particularly when cloud saves are involved. Store the copy outside the live server directory and, ideally, on a different disk or host.

- Announce maintenance. Ask players to leave the server or pause access. Do not allow building, autosaving or shutdown activity while you are deciding which files to remove.
- Create a named in-game backup. If you have console access, run
server.SaveGame "pre-reset-backup". The command writes the current session under that name, giving you a clear rollback point. - Copy the save directory. Copy the complete relevant directory, not just a file whose name looks familiar. Include every session you may need to restore.
- Back up settings separately. If there is any chance you might touch
ServerSettings.PORT.sav, copy that file to the same protected backup location. It contains configuration and auto-load information, not merely world progress. - Verify the copy. Check that the copied files have non-zero sizes, retain their
.savextension and can be seen from the account that will perform the recovery. Keep the backup outside any directory the server scans on startup.
Do not rely on a rename inside the live directory as a backup. A typo, a cleanup script or a later server start can still affect that copy. The usable recovery copy is the one stored away from the active path.
Find the correct Satisfactory save directory
The location depends on whether you are handling a desktop save or a dedicated-server installation. The official support page gives the standard local location as %LOCALAPPDATA%FactoryGameSavedSaveGames.
Dedicated server on Linux
The Official Satisfactory Wiki lists the usual Linux dedicated-server directory as:
~/.config/Epic/FactoryGame/Saved/SaveGames/server
The tilde means the home directory of the account running the server. If the service runs under a dedicated account, inspect that account’s home rather than the home directory of your personal login.

If a directory appears empty, first confirm which account owns the server process. Looking in your personal %LocalAppData% while the service runs as NetworkService, for example, can make a healthy installation look like it has no saves.
Replace the active world with Server Manager
Use this route when you have a local .sav you want the server to load. It avoids guessing a filename and is the preferred way to switch worlds without manually deleting files.
- Stop player activity and place the server in maintenance.
- Open the server-management interface and select the server’s Manage Saves tab.
- Choose the option to upload a local save and select the intended
.savfile from your protected local copy or another known-good location. - After the upload finishes, select the intended session and save as the one the server should load. Verify the displayed name before confirming.
- Start or restart the server according to your hosting panel’s controls.
- Join with an administrator account and confirm that the expected map, player inventory and factory state are present.
This operation changes which world is active; it does not, by itself, prove that every older file has been erased. If your goal is data retention or privacy, inspect the save list afterward and remove unwanted files with an appropriate API or filesystem procedure.
When the uploaded world does not load
- Check that you selected the complete
.savfile rather than a similarly named save from another session. - Confirm that the upload completed before restarting the server.
- Look for an automatic-load setting that still points to another session. That setting is stored with server configuration and is distinct from the world file.
- If the old world returns, stop the server, preserve the current files, and repeat the selection with the exact intended session. Do not start deleting random files while the process is running.
Delete one save through the HTTPS API
The HTTPS API exposes the DeleteSaveFile operation for deleting one existing save. It requires administrator privileges, so use an administrator token and perform the request through the API interface provided by your server version.

Safe procedure
- Make the backup described above and record the exact save name, including capitalization and any punctuation shown by the server.
- Pause player access so no one is writing to the target while the request is processed.
- Authenticate with an administrator token.
- Call
DeleteSaveFilewith the exact save name. The operation removes that existing save file from the server. - Refresh the save list or query the server again to confirm that the intended file is gone and unrelated saves remain.
- Select another valid save for automatic loading if the deleted file was the one the server expected at startup.
Deleting a save is not the same as changing a filename. The API performs an explicit deletion and does not create a replacement. If the request reports an authorization failure, obtain a token with administrator privileges rather than retrying with a player token. If it reports that the save cannot be found, inspect the server’s displayed save name and session before trying again.
Delete every save in one session through the API
Use DeleteSaveSession only when you intentionally want to remove all save files belonging to a named session. The API documentation describes this as deleting all save files for the specific session name, and it also requires administrator privileges.
- List or inspect the server’s sessions and copy the exact session name you intend to remove.
- Compare that name with your backup notes. Similar world names are not a safe substitute for an exact match.
- Ensure players are offline and keep the backup outside the live save directory.
- Authenticate with an administrator token and call
DeleteSaveSessionusing the verified session name. - Confirm the response and recheck the remaining sessions. A successful request should remove every save associated with that session, not just the most recent save.
- Choose a remaining save or upload a replacement through Manage Saves before allowing players back in.
Never use a broad or guessed name for this operation. If you are unsure which session a file belongs to, stop and use Server Manager or inspect the save list first. Recovery after a session deletion depends entirely on the backup you made beforehand.
Wipe saves manually from the filesystem
Manual deletion gives you the most control, but it also has the highest operational risk. Use it for a deliberate full wipe, cleanup after an API failure or a host migration where you need to remove selected files directly.
- Stop the dedicated-server process completely. Wait until the service manager reports it stopped. Deleting files while the process is active can race with autosaves and leave a partial or recreated file.
- Open the path for the account running the server. Use the Linux or Windows locations listed earlier, including the service-account variants where applicable.
- Move the backup out of the directory. A backup left beside the live files can be mistaken for an active save or removed during cleanup.
- Identify the exact files. Keep any session you intend to preserve. Remove only the
.savfiles you have selected for deletion. - Leave server settings alone unless a configuration reset is intentional. In particular, do not delete
ServerSettings.PORT.savas part of an ordinary world wipe. - Restart the server and select the desired world. If no usable save remains, upload a replacement in Manage Saves and set it as the active session.
- Test before reopening access. Join, verify the map and factory state, and check that the server’s automatic-load choice points to a valid save.
Full wipe versus selective cleanup
A full wipe removes all world-save files in the server directory, leaving no existing factory to load. Selective cleanup removes only named files and preserves other sessions. Write down the filenames before deletion so another administrator can understand exactly what changed.

Do not confuse a world wipe with deleting ServerSettings.PORT.sav
ServerSettings.PORT.sav is a configuration file. According to the documented behavior, deleting it resets the server name, player password, automatic-load session name and certificate. It is therefore a settings reset as well as a removal of the auto-load reference.
When deleting it is appropriate
Use this action only when you deliberately want to rebuild server configuration—for example, when the stored certificate or credentials must be replaced and you have recorded the new values. Stop the server first and copy the file to a protected settings backup.

What to do afterward
- Start the server and complete the configuration flow required by your host.
- Set a new server name and player password.
- Re-establish the certificate or certificate-dependent access used by your installation.
- Select a valid automatic-load session, or upload one through Manage Saves if the world was also removed.
- Test administrative and player connections before announcing that the reset is complete.
If your only objective is to start a fresh world, keep this file. Removing it creates avoidable work and can make a healthy save appear missing because the server no longer knows which session to load automatically.
Start a new world without losing the old one
The safest “new server” workflow is reversible: preserve the old save, upload or select the new world, and leave the old files untouched until the new session has been tested.
- Run
server.SaveGame "pre-reset-backup"and copy the resulting directory to storage outside the server path. - Prepare the new local
.savfile and confirm that it is the world you intend to use. - In Manage Saves, upload the new file and select its session as the active save.
- Restart and connect as an administrator. Check the map, spawn location, player permissions and a representative factory area.
- Only after validation, remove obsolete saves with
DeleteSaveFile,DeleteSaveSessionor a stopped-server filesystem procedure.
Renaming a file should not be treated as changing its internal session identity. Use the management interface or the API to select and delete sessions; a filename change alone is not a reliable identity-management operation.
Troubleshoot common reset problems
The old world keeps loading
The automatic-load setting may still reference the old session, or the replacement was uploaded but not selected. Open Manage Saves, verify the active session, and check that the old save was not left as the selected default. If you deleted the settings file, configure the automatic-load choice again.

No saves appear in the folder
Check the operating-system account running the server and compare its home or profile with the documented paths. On Windows, inspect the systemprofile and NetworkService locations when the service is not running as your personal user. On Linux, inspect the home directory of the service account rather than assuming it is your login.
The API refuses the request
Confirm that the token has administrator privileges, the operation name is exactly DeleteSaveFile or DeleteSaveSession, and the supplied name matches the server’s spelling. A save-file deletion needs a save name; a session deletion needs a valid session name. Do not substitute one for the other.
The server starts but players cannot connect
If ServerSettings.PORT.sav was removed, the password, certificate and server name may have been reset. Reconfigure those values, issue or restore the required certificate, and test an administrator connection before troubleshooting the world itself.
A deleted world is needed again
Stop making changes, keep the current state as a separate copy, and restore the backed-up save directory or upload the backed-up .sav through Manage Saves. Do not copy a backup over active files while the server process is running.
Reset checklist for administrators
- Players notified and server access paused.
- Named backup created with
server.SaveGame "pre-reset-backup"when console access was available. - Save directory copied outside the live path.
- Exact target save or session name verified.
- Method chosen: Manage Saves,
DeleteSaveFile,DeleteSaveSessionor stopped-server filesystem deletion. ServerSettings.PORT.savpreserved unless a configuration reset was intentional.- Server restarted and the expected session confirmed in-game.
- Old saves removed only after the replacement world passed testing.
Which method should you use?
For a normal world change, use Manage Saves. For one unwanted save, use DeleteSaveFile. For every save in one verified session, use DeleteSaveSession. For hands-on cleanup, stop the server and delete selected .sav files from the correct account’s directory. Delete ServerSettings.PORT.sav only when resetting credentials, certificates and automatic-load metadata is part of the plan. In every case, the backup made before the change is what makes the reset reversible.
