Try the program’s publisher update first. If no supported update exists, run Windows 11’s built-in Program Compatibility Troubleshooter at Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Program Compatibility Troubleshooter > Run. Apply the suggested settings, then test the specific task you need—not merely whether the window opens.
Compatibility mode can correct some common assumptions an older application makes about Windows, but it is not a Windows XP emulator and cannot guarantee that a particular program, installer, driver, or peripheral will work. If the troubleshooter cannot make the application usable, isolate the failing component and consider a properly licensed virtual machine as a separate option.

What Windows 11 compatibility mode actually does
The Program Compatibility Troubleshooter examines an older desktop application and proposes settings intended to address common compatibility problems. It can help when a program expects behavior associated with an earlier Windows release, but Microsoft describes it as assistance for common issues rather than a guarantee for every application. Success depends on more than the program’s age. The installer, operating-system architecture, security requirements, device drivers, connected hardware, and the exact operation you perform can each change the result. Compatibility mode may help the application itself while leaving a required printer, scanner, license key, or other device driver unsupported.

Prepare before changing anything
Identify the exact application and version
Write down the product name, version number, and whether you are troubleshooting installation, startup, or a particular feature. “An XP program” is not specific enough: two releases of the same application can use different installers, drivers, or system requirements. Record the name of the executable or installer file as well if it is visible.
Look for a supported update first
Visit the publisher’s official website and check for a Windows 11-compatible release or a current installer. Microsoft recommends checking the publisher for non-Store applications. A maintained version is preferable to forcing an obsolete build because it may include updated drivers, security fixes, and support for current Windows components. Do not download an installer from an untrusted mirror simply because it is labeled “XP compatible.”
Keep a way back
Compatibility troubleshooting normally changes settings for the application, not the entire operating system, but preserve your original installer and any license information. If the program contains valuable data, make a backup before testing. Note the original settings so you can undo a change that makes behavior worse. Avoid replacing system files or disabling Windows security merely to make an old application start.

Confirm that the Windows 11 account can install software if setup requires elevation, that the installation files are complete, and that you have enough free storage for the application and its working files. Close other copies of the program before testing so an old process does not make a new result misleading. If the application uses a project folder, sample file, removable drive, or license device, identify each dependency before you begin.
Run the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter
Use this current Windows 11 route:
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Choose System, then Troubleshoot.
- Open Other troubleshooters.
- Find Program Compatibility Troubleshooter and select Run.
- Follow the prompts to select the affected application. If Windows presents recommended compatibility settings, apply them when they match the problem you observed.
- Launch the application and perform the real task that failed. For example, open the document type you need, complete a calculation, or use the device function the program requires.
- Return to the troubleshooter if the test fails and report the exact error and stage at which it occurred.
The tool’s recommendations are specific to the application and symptoms Windows can detect. Applying them does not certify the program as supported, and a successful launch does not prove that every feature works.
If the Settings path has changed
Windows labels can move between builds. Microsoft’s troubleshooter instructions direct users to open the Get Help app and search for Run the Windows Program Compatibility troubleshooter when the older interface is not shown. You can also use the Settings search box for “Program Compatibility Troubleshooter.” The current Microsoft overview is Windows troubleshooters.

Test the result instead of stopping at launch
An application that displays a window may still fail during the operation that matters. Use a short, repeatable test and record what happens.

Keep the error wording verbatim. “It does not work” is difficult to diagnose; “setup stops while registering a device driver” identifies a different problem from “the program opens but freezes when exporting.”
Separate application problems from driver and peripheral problems
Older software often depends on hardware-specific drivers. If the program opens and fails only when communicating with a device, troubleshoot the device path separately rather than repeatedly changing application compatibility settings.
- Install available device-driver updates through Windows Update. Microsoft recommends updating drivers when an application has issues.
- Disconnect and reconnect the peripheral, then check whether Windows recognizes it independently of the old application.
- Try a simple operation from a current Windows utility, if one exists, to determine whether the hardware works at all.
- For printer or scanner failures, follow the dedicated Windows printer or scanner troubleshooting guidance. A working application cannot compensate for a driver that Windows 11 cannot load.
- Record whether the failure occurs before the application sees the device, when selecting it, or while transferring data.
Do not assume that a compatibility setting can supply a missing 32-bit or obsolete hardware driver. Driver support is a separate dependency and may be the reason a program remains unusable.
Understand the 64-bit limitation without jumping to conclusions
Windows 11 is 64-bit only. That is a meaningful constraint for very old software, but it does not establish that every 32-bit XP-era application will fail. Some 32-bit desktop applications can run on a 64-bit Windows installation, while others rely on components, installers, or drivers that are no longer available. The outcome must be determined for the particular program and task.

Avoid claiming that an application works—or cannot work—solely because it was released during the Windows XP era.

Common compatibility-mode pitfalls
Changing settings repeatedly can obscure the original symptom. Apply one recommended change, restart the application, and rerun the same test. If the result is worse, restore the prior setting before trying another path. A setting that fixes installation may not fix runtime behavior, and a setting that helps the executable may have no effect on a device driver.
Do not confuse a file-association problem with a failed application. If double-clicking an old document does nothing, start the program directly and open a small test file from inside it. Likewise, a permissions error may concern the folder where the program is trying to save rather than the program’s compatibility. Test saving to a location you are allowed to use, then record whether the required workflow still depends on a restricted folder.
Old software can also expect a particular display size, removable media, network location, or licensing component. Treat each expectation as a dependency to verify, not as proof that compatibility mode is broken. If the program requires a physical key or specialized device, confirm that Windows 11 detects it before spending time on application settings.

Classify the failure
First decide whether the blocker is the installer, the application executable, a required file format, a driver, connected hardware, or a Windows security or architecture requirement. The stage-specific notes from your test will tell you which branch to investigate. Re-running the same troubleshooter without identifying the failing dependency rarely adds useful information.
Check the publisher’s support position
Look for a newer release, an officially documented workaround, or a replacement export format. If the publisher no longer supports the software, its documentation may still identify required runtime components or devices. Do not install unofficial system modifications just because a forum post says they helped another computer; the other installation may have had different hardware and dependencies.
Consider virtualization as a separate route
A virtual machine runs another operating system separately from the Windows 11 host. This can provide an environment closer to the one the application expects, but it is not an automatic fix. The virtual machine still needs lawful installation media, a valid operating-system license, enough resources, and compatible access to the files or peripherals your task requires.

On a Windows 11 PC, Microsoft documents enabling hardware virtualization and the Virtual Machine Platform feature in Enable virtualization on Windows. Enabling that feature is only one part of creating and configuring a virtualized environment; Microsoft’s page is not a complete Windows XP virtual-machine tutorial. Confirm the software license and the guest operating system’s license before proceeding, and obtain installation media lawfully.
Plan the virtual machine around the task, not merely the operating-system label. Decide how you will move test files between host and guest, where output will be saved, and whether the required printer, scanner, license key, or other device can be exposed to the guest. A virtual machine may isolate the old application from Windows 11, but it can introduce its own setup and device-integration work. Test the complete workflow before relying on it for production data.
Compare the available routes
There is no reliable success percentage for these approaches in Microsoft’s material, so choose based on the failure you observed rather than an invented ranking.

The installer will not start or stops partway through
- Confirm that you have the exact installer and that it came from a trusted source.
- Check the publisher for a newer installer before changing compatibility settings.
- Run the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter and apply its recommendation if it addresses setup.
- Record the precise step and error. If setup is attempting to install a driver or system component, treat that as a separate compatibility issue rather than an ordinary application launch failure.
The program installs but closes immediately
- Run the troubleshooter for the installed program, not only for the installer.
- Test without opening a project or device connection to see whether startup alone fails.
- Capture any displayed error and note whether the process becomes unresponsive instead of closing.
- Check for a supported publisher update; a current build may replace obsolete components.
The window opens, but a feature freezes
- Repeat the operation with a small test file and record the exact menu command or file type.
- Check whether the failure requires a printer, scanner, removable drive, or other peripheral.
- Update relevant drivers through Windows Update and use the separate peripheral troubleshooting guidance.
- Do not describe the application as working until the required feature completes successfully.
The application works, but printing or scanning does not
- Verify that Windows 11 recognizes the device outside the old program.
- Install available driver updates and test a basic operation.
- Determine whether the failure happens when selecting the device or during data transfer.
- If the device needs an obsolete driver, compatibility mode for the application may not be sufficient; assess a supported device, updated application, or a virtualized setup based on your licensing and task requirements.
A practical decision checklist
- Write down the exact program name, version, installer, and failed operation.
- Check the publisher for a supported Windows 11 update.
- Use Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Program Compatibility Troubleshooter > Run.
- Apply an offered setting only when it matches the observed problem.
- Test installation, startup, the core task, output, and any required peripheral separately.

- If the application remains unusable, classify the dependency that fails and decide whether a publisher update or a properly licensed virtual machine is practical.
- Keep the exact error, Windows build, application version, and test result so a publisher or support technician can reproduce the issue.
Security and licensing boundaries
Use installation files from a trusted publisher or another lawful source. Do not disable security protections, replace Windows system files, or install unknown “fix” packages solely to force an XP-era application to run. Those actions can create a larger security problem without addressing the real dependency.

Stop repeating compatibility changes when the same specific test fails after the troubleshooter’s recommendation and driver checks. At that point, you have useful evidence: identify the unsupported component, ask the publisher about a current release, or evaluate virtualization against the exact task and peripheral requirements. A program that merely opens but cannot complete the work should be treated as unusable for that workflow.
